We Uncovered Our Lost Attic

We Uncovered the Attic in The Old Station by knocking through. The guys from Merthyr Salvage did a fantastic job once again. This rip our is taking a long time but the attic is the part I have been waiting for, uncovering the past!

The upstairs floor being previously lowered into the ceiling space of the lower floor, required the cutting and removal of sections of the roof truss tie beam. Those beams provided tension which kept roof weight loads from spreading the walls apart. The removed truss beams critical job was being done by the added floor structure run parallel to the truss. Now that you've removed the upstairs floor, the heavy slate roof is pushing out on walls supporting it, without structure to keep it in tension. Please have a structure specialist inspect the changes and sign-off on it. Good luck.

Spectacular open space starting to reveal itself. There's a caveat that goes with the open space however; be sure to install heat and smoke detectors throughout the space as the building now has the open space where a fire can easily and very quickly spread. Good protection for your investment. Just a thought.

Oh my goodness! So much work! And that CAT! Daredevil! I love those pointy-top doors; so thick and solid. Hope you can use them for something, maybe in the out buildings. It seems like a lot of 'wanton destruction', but people need to remember that what's being ripped out is not original to the Victorian date of the building; likely done in the 80s (I think you said), when it was first converted to a home. Returning all of those original windows to the light is vital, and now you'll have the space open to reconfigure into good livable space. Those tiny bedrooms were not that. Carry on, Old Station Family. :)

I think the problem is floor area. There are plans to restore the outside, and have at least some areas with full height, but to live here with a family of four you need a certain number of rooms and square meters, and the ground floor just isn't large enough. There is probably a planning video on the channel with the details, and I suspect those plans will change as the renovation continues.

Interesting to see that those massive trusses were buried in the original station ceiling. The bottom of those old joists are flush with the bottom of the trusses. The remnants of the original cornice show that as well. Inasmuch as you want to expose the tops of the old windows, you won't have much of an upstairs left. Maybe just a low attic. So I'm quite anxious to see the plans. I vote for full height open beam ceiling. Of course that gets a little expensive in the winter. Radient floor heating would help.

Nor, were they careful about putting the insulation in sealed bags right away. And then there's the family and pets wandering around inside breathing in that air. I pray nobody gets asbestosis or any other respiratory illness. I'm glad you're saving the old chest of drawers. I hope the other drawer isn't missing. I can't wait to see part two.😮

I think most of the original features were ripped out by previous owners who did a very poor modernisation of the Station. Most of what's been taken away is plaster board and insulation, horrible looking doors and beams that are of no use or interest. They are opening up the original windows and exposing the big triangular rafters which will be wonderful when completed. From what she's said I think they will be trying to source things that will reflect the original building.

You could take and lower the windows so they would be just off the ground floor. or put in a small window below the decorated window top to bring down the windows.

I’m guessing you will probably raise the roof so you’ll have the required clearance for living space in the attic? Whilst keeping the original floor height which was there when the station was first built. So none of the windows will be covered over. I know it’s a historical building, but that’s the only way I can think you could achieve a liveable upper floor.

I have no idea what or how you are going to plan the inside. I would still have idea if it was mine so its going to be very interesting to see what you come up with. Cheers Chris

All that old insulation they’re tearing out just makes me itch to look at it. I realize it’s not fun to work in a mask, but neither are those lung diseases you can get from breathing in little pieces of that stuff. Would you have a space large enough for your family if they left the ceiling open? Or even if they just returned the ceiling to the original level to free up those fantastic old windows?

I hope you saved that copper water heater. Just for the copper! Valuable metal now and will be more so along with Gold and Silver.

The demolition crew is a salvage crew. They get whatever is found, but if something has monetary value, they deduct that from what they charged to do the demolition.

Wasn't there some water tanks up there with crazy piping? Seems I remember from early videos and they leaked and caused damage.😊

This looks like an exciting project you’re doing. A couple of sky lights in the main building would look awesome. Your project though. 😂
