This is Jan, Darlene is my mom. I’ve heard of this practice. It’s the same philosophy with visible repairs of saris. These heirlooms and their histories are cherished rather than tossed away. Some observations: it seems to me the “right amount” of gold/glue is essential. Then when you press the pieces together the “mortar” that squeezes out will leave a neat little line at the repair. I would go to the thrift store and get the cheapest chipped pieces to practice on. And since the “right amount” might be critical, start with cheap glue, about the same consistency as the real glue, with a dry colored powder stirred in. Lots of regular glue dries clear and this should be visible. Then practice. Sometimes I have luck applying the “right amount” of glue with a toothpick, dipping the toothpick into the glue and applying to the surface. I thought this through because I have a small collection of broken tea cups and saucers that were my grandmothers. I would love to repair them with this technique. Jan and Darlene in Oklahoma. Oh my gosh, now I don’t feel so bad about when my DH tries to repair the sink faucet, and he sends me scurrying for some tool he needs, and it’s not going well, and I get exasperated and say..” I TOLD you we should have just called a plumber!” 😂🤣🥰

This process reminds me of the Japanese art of Sashiko in which you repair holes or tears in garments with a special type of stitching and thread. Sometimes patches are stitched on using the sashiko technique. I think the philosophy behind the art of sashiko is the same as the philosophy behind Kintsugi. Beauty in brokenness.

I was so stressed just watching this - even shouting 'no'..... when they took sandpaper to this beautiful glazed bowl. I thought the mini bowls might be for mixing in and the paper plate for resting the used implements on. Maybe one day I will manage to watch the last few minutes! Lol

May I suggest you do one broken piece at a time waiting 24 hours before adding the next shard. After glueing each section do not handle the object until fully dry to avoid shifting. Two part epoxy is a bear to work with, good job going for it.

I too am familiar with a “Mayumi” whom I once had the pleasure of seeing her play a storefront piano concert in San Francisco China/Japan town many years ago. I wonder is this the same Mayumi?! I still have her music to that day. Please respond if she’s a recording artist for Asian piano? That would please me so much to be able to connect in this way. I have a childhood memory of my father repairing broken pottery using a special glue for ceramics. Sorry I don’t know any specifics: I was young. But I remember that my father was patient and good with his hands and the repair was successful. It held and the glue dried invisibly. You had to look very, very closely to see the original break. I’d be looking for a similar glue to use instead of the gold stuff. IMHO.

"It's not as easy as we thought." If I had a nickel for every time I've said that, I could travel around the world! It is so encouraging to see you two experiencing the same frustration. I hope you continued to experiment and were completely successful in time.

Interesting about this repair technique. I just finished watching the show "Killing Eve" on Netflix and in the very last episode, the main character, played by Sandra Oh, talked about this method of Japanese repair of pottery and its meaning! I'm sure the company got the idea from this show to make a version of this repair kit. I agree with Arne and bring the pieces in Japan for the authentic treatment! It is sort of link visible mending for pottery! Although, I think the product you bought is just regular epoxy glue with gold power that you can get in any craft store....I think you just leave the glue with gold visible and you just don't wipe anything down. I hope it wasn't a lot of money, but the whole process was so entertaining! This was funny!

In figuring things out, I am Carlos-'that booklet is for me', and my husband is Arne -'what's this for?" and tries to figure it out without reading the instructions first ;) Such a good combination when you work together. Also, I think this is such an honest video. People sell these kits and make it sound easy but spending money on something that isn't really simple doesn't make sense for many people, especially in this crazy worldwide economic crisis. Really glad you were honest and showed the reality of this kit.

Kudos to you for trying this on camera. Yep, start with something to practice 1st before you do the special pieces. I'm thinking you need to put it in thicker so it creates a bead or ridge of gold when you squish the edges together. Making that even & the thickness you want is the art & comes with practice. But we want it the 1st time, of course. ❤
