"We try not to get attached to one another." Work of SES sappers / hromadske
De-occupied Kharkiv region is believed to be the most mined region of Ukraine. From September 2022, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberates this oblast, sappers work day and night to demine the land. During the past year, they received 22 thousand calls from civilians: at the end of 2022 there is still 1,5 thousand unprocessed calls left - the rest they were able to solve.
“It’s scary all the time: now, yesterday was scary, tomorrow will be scary. This fear is our aid: when you stop worrying, you need to change your line of work,” says one of the sappers.
We spent two days with the workers of State Emergency Service of Ukraine to show how they get through demining calls from civilians, risking their lives every day.

Thank you Hromadske. You have been showing the world this damn war from so many aspects. Maybe we don't like to learn about it but we need to. It doesn't escape me that the deminer's work is often more dangerous than being in the front lines. Because of them people will someday be able to raise grapes and bees without fear of loss of life and limb. This war will be over soon but will continue for decades for the sappers. That thought breaks my heart. I don't usually post at length but will share a couple of ideas in another post that is meant for the consideration of the deminers that may make their job a little safer. I am replying to my own post but this is meant especially for the deminers. When one of you guys are lost, in addition to your own life and the tragedy to your loved ones, an extremely valuable skill set has been blown to the winds. I am offering these ideas if they be of any use. Do you think it would be better if you put the unexploded ordinances in a trailer instead of carrying them in your vehicle? The thought of those damned plastic "petals" just makes me angry. The thought of a child chasing butterflies a decade from now and losing their legs makes my blood boiling hot. Maybe a small remote control steamroller could clear a path. It wouldn't be suitable for all terrain but at least you would have a safe pathway from which to work. As for the big plastic mines buried deep. Those are undectable as far as I know. Maybe a huge steamroller with spiked rollers? It would have to be built stronger than a tank so that when it sets off a mine it would not be destroyed and can continue the mission.

In most of the modern wars including WW1 there are many mines and unexploded bombs all around the countryside but also in cities, so after this war is over it will be decades at least before all the country is free from the war. These are very brave ppl. and they do it for little pay apparently which means that they do it for the love of their ppl. and their country! Heroes by any standard, I think!
