We Tested EVERY flex with a Radar Gun

Should you be using a different flex stick? We tested mini sticks, 20 flex, 30 flex, 40 flex, 50 flex, 60 flex, 77 flex, 85 flex and 155 flex to see what the best flex was for the most power. The results were pretty surprising! (we even tried mini sticks)

    You are shooting g too close to the radar and the radar s picking up the speed of the stick blade, not the puck. I have a radar from Hockey Shot and you need to take some no puck test swings to be sure you are far enough away from the radar. Typically I’ve found with the radar behind the net, you need to be at the hashmarks. That’s about 25 feet away.

    I used to play D with an 85, dropped to 77 and 75, but now more as a forward, the last stick I bought, I actually went with an intermediate (I’m 5’7”) 55 flex. It took awhile to figure out receiving hard passes, but I like it a lot more.

  • @bornepatrol

    I’m the same height. I buy intermediates in 55 in a pinch or 65 flex is my preferred and cut a bit off. Coming from from 100 plus flex 20 years ago slowly worked my way down. I think as the game has evolved from slap shots even at our lower levels we’ve seen players drop flex.

    I have a Stephen John's stick from the Dallas Stars and his flex is 120 and I had to cut it down about 2.5 inches. I can only imagine what the flex is like once I did that. It is a beast though for slap shots when you get a hold of them. I'm 6 foot 210 and I have to use every bit of strength and momentum to get a decent shot off.

    The higher the flex the more power it will generate but you need the strength to actually bend the stick to generate the power

  • @mhicaoidh1

    @mhicaoidh1

    10 ай бұрын

    You're right, but for the wrong reason. The stick doesn't *generate* power. It *stores* energy you generate through strength and leverage. The second half of your statement is correct. A stiffer stick has the potential to store more energy but you have to be strong enough to load that energy into the stick.

    No 100's in your test? I think it's less about how much flex and more about how hard the shaft snaps back. A wet noodle has the most flex of all but it if it doesn't snap back hard there is no release of energy. So for me, a real pro stick made from the best materials is the way to go. If you look around you can find used ones or pro returns. Also, I wonder how long those flexy sticks retain their snap before they start to wear out and lose energy. The NHL guys can use a new stick every night. I want a stick to last over 5 years.

    I did this test with my HockeyShot radar with a bunch of different flex sticks, 58 (intermediate shaft) and 60, 65, 70 and 75 (senior shaft). I’m 5’8” tall, average build. With slap shots and wrist shots, the 65 was the highest speed, with 60 and 70 not far behind. Stationary snap shots and toe drag snap shots were highest speeds with 58 flex, with 60 not far behind, and 65, 70 and 75 showing speeds dropping off significantly. Seeing as I’m a forward that likes to shoot close to the net and do quick one-timers, I use a 58 or 60 flex stick. When I play defence I use a 65 flex, which is my spare stick.

    A couple other factors when choosing a flex are durability (if you're not loaded, stiffer sticks will last longer), feel (stiffer sticks generally have more touch and control), and ease of release. You might be able to get the same power of shot off with many flexes, but in a game you don't always have the chance to load up perfectly, so a little less flex maybe makes it easier to get more out of that off balance quick release in the slot. Also, you guys were probably getting tired as you tested the stiffer sticks, and probably weren't able to put as much into them. I think the other commenters mentioning the radar gun picking up the stick speed might also have a point.
