WE TESTED $12 Weed Killer vs $300 Weed Killer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Is it Possible a Cheap Weed Killer can Compete with One of the Most Expensive Herbicides on the Market???
Let’s Find out!
In this video, we test out a $12.00 bottle of Bioadvanced weed and crabgrass killer vs a $300 bottle of Pylex Herbicide.
The first herbicide we will be applying is Pylex. Pylex Herbicide costs $300 a bottle and is a post emergent herbicide that is specially made to control goosegrass and bermudagrass in cool season lawns but it is also listed to kill a wide variety of broadleaf and grassy weeds as well. It is very good at controlling grassy weeds and does a decent job killing broadleaf weeds as well. It can be applied as a spot or broadcast spray to your lawn. It is easily absorbed by the roots, shoots, and leaves of plants, making it a very powerful herbicide. It controls weeds such as crabgrass, goosegrass, nimblewill, bentgrass, chickweed, clover, bermudagrass, amaranth, and dallisgrass. It must be used with either a crop oil or methylated seed oil which act as a surfactant. Because the weeds it targets like crabgrass have waxy leaves the crop oil helps the herbicide stick to them.
The second weed killer we apply is BioAdvanced All-In-One Lawn Weed Killer which costs $12. This Herbicide contains 24D , Dicamba and Quinclorac which should do a great job killing both broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds. 24d and Dicamba are some of the best herbicides to control broadleaf weeds such as dandelions, thistle and spurge.

ALL Weed killers are bad for you, bad for your pets, bad for your children. "Weeds" are other plants and all of them have a function. Clover is the best of them all, it takes nitrogen from the atmosphere and puts it in the soil whereas dandelion's deep roots pull nitrogen from well below the surface and bring it to the topsoil. Chemical company call them weeds to sell you their products. I spread different varieties of millet seed for Mourning Doves (because they are hunted in the country, poisoned in the city yet they are good, gentle birds). The seeds they don't eat do sprout. Yarrow still grows where the hybrid seeds everywhere else hasn't choked it out. I have, because of all this, a far more drought tolerant lawn than yours and since people seem determined to end our own lives by ruining our only and beautiful home, at least my lawn might feed some deserving survivors.

Sulfentrazone with quinclorac and you’ll get good control of crabgrass. Pylex isn’t too expensive when you look at the cost/k, it’s just the initial upfront cost that makes it hard for homeowners to justify, at 1ml/k it comes out to about $2.50/k. Keep up the great videos!

I let the fescue grass grow to about 4.5 inches and waited a week, letting the grass grow to 5 and six inches in some area. I cut last Tuesday and the Poa really hasnt come back yet. I have read where Poa starts to disappear when the weather gets hot but here in PA it hasnt been consistently hot yet. So hopefully I found a solution to at least slow it down. Question for you both. 300 dollars does seem high but it looked like you used less than 5ml to spray that 500 sq ft. Test area. So that 300 goes an awfully long way I’d say and may even work out to be more economical in the long run. Just a thought and my observation. I’ve used Tenacity with a non ionic surfactant and it’s amazing on crabgrass. I have a tough time controlling clover on a neighbors lawn I care for and a reddish small leaf clover in my backyard along my fences. Any suggestions for this? Thank you both

As a scientist, I appreciate what you did here so kudos for an informative and scientific video! Even though the bottle is small, it is still relatively large if you look at how many applications you get. For my small lawn, I'd have like 2,000 applications. With that being said, have you, or anyone else in the lawn community thought about selling smaller amounts to residential owners who clearly don't need that much? If there were a few other people that wanted to go in together, I'd be down! That price is just .... bonkers!

thank you! yes it is absoluty pricey but like you said, given the low app rates it comes out to be pretty cheap per app. i had a viewer break down the cost per 1k sqft and it turned out to be about 30 cents more per 1ksft than the box big store herbicide

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Fair point. However, if you aren't going to use anywhere near the total amount in the bottle, it is several hundred dollars down the drain. I have a 3 year old son and I'd rather spend that money on him than weeds! Here's to the company hopefully making a one ounce version in the future. Until then, I'm going to use Fusilade and Triclopyr to the best of my ability ... unless someone out there is reading and wants to sell an ounce to me! Actually, Scotts used to sell $30 bottles of the stuff at Home Depot and other big boxes under the name "Crabgrass Destroyer." It's the same active ingredient, Topramezone. Unfortunately, I think big box users don't read directions or are impatient "it's been 2 days and the crabgrass is not dead!" , so it got bad reviews. It works great if you know how to use it. It's no longer sold in stores and I'm not sure if Scotts is still making it, but Scotts themselves still sell bottles directly (it might be new old stock) online on Ebay. So, in this case, you only have to spend $30 and not $300.

@@wushufanatic You're welcome. I was highly upset 2 years ago when Home Depot stopped carrying it. I didn't want to spend $300 on a bottle of Pylex that was enough to spray the whole neighborhood. It is the only product that works very well on crabgrass here in Northern Virginia. Great vid as always George. Professional grade is definitely the way to go for most any lawn products - be it herbicide , fertilizer , insecticide , fungicide or anything else. Trying convince more of my friends to go that route. They call me crazy for spending as much up front. But i tell them given how far most professional grade products go , with way higher percentages of active ingredients (even factoring in the dilution rate) and less need for reapplications as well , it is actually a huge savings in the long run. And overall professional grade is just way more effective , if used correctly , which granted takes a bit more planning and skill (and the right equipment in some cases). Much of the big box stuff is actually quite expensive as the coverage is often quite small in comparison , and usually not super effective ; the only positive is they are designed for pretty much anyone to use with not much risk of damage. But once you go professional there is no looking back.

Totally 100% agree. Pay up front, do the job once and be done with intended results. The big box store stuff works some what, but your going to get way better results from pro products

  • @Andrew77MUFC

    2 жыл бұрын

@@MyGreenLawn2019 yup and even professional grade there are different tiers of pricing where even at a lower price point you can still get exponentially better results than any big box stuff. But yes i agree if the wallet allows pay up and get it done right the first time. And like i said given how far the professional grade products go and the superior quality it is actually a much bigger savings than the big box stuff. Despite the higher up front cost. I use Humic Max from Lebanon Turf and despite costing around $70 up front the coverage is 15,000 sq ft. Compare that to Milo which is also vastly inferior to Lebanon but it would take 6 bags of Milo to match that coverage which is over $100 in my area. And you can name many many examples with similar price comparisons of professional vs big box ; on top of which the big box stuff is nowhere near as effective and actually costs quite a bit more in most cases.

Also what liquid lawn food would you recommend be used to add in Jerry's cocktail? 2) In this video you discuss goose grass. Not familiar with that. Do you know the difference between that and quack grass and can quack grass be destroyed without damaging the lawn? From my research and what I've been told there's no solution for quack grass without destroying everything or hand pulling the weed/grass. If you have any suggestions for quack grass and any additional tips for mixing and applying Jerry's concoctions, I would love to hear them. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you! i always assumed his cocktails were for 1k sqft as that pretty much the standard for lawn applications, but i could be totally wrong! I used setting 3 on my chapin hose end sprayer. Also he doesn't specify what plant food to use so i just used what i had on hand which was superthrive. As far as the quack grass, yes gly is the only way to get rid of it but are you 100 percent sure thats what you have?

I found that the BEST way to suppress weeds and other grasses is to overseed the area. The mycorrhizae in my lawn makes the seeds germ and establish fast. Bacillus/trychaderma/trace minerals take care of the rest. Don't forget the worms. As long as you seed at the right time not when weeds thrive (hottest season) you should have good results. And with this method you don't disturb your microbes or carbon matrix ❤️

OK so I am a turf grass professional having worked at some of the highest levels of sports turf from PGA tour golf courses to high end estates, to municipal sports turf. I've worked on cool and warm season turf from New England to Florida. I literally just finished spraying goose grass moments ago using a spot spray mix that I have incorporating Pylex with Metrichor, Dismiss, and Manuscript herbicides. When it comes to the cost of Pylex it is deceiving when you see the 300 dollar price tag as a broadcast. However using it in a spot spray formulation , you mitigate the cost and increase the efficacy by using only 2 c.c.'s of Pylex for a 25 gallon mix. Using this type of mix, you only need to spray a small dab in the center of the plant. so yes it's expensive, but it goes a longgggg way. Give it a shot.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare to be honest I really do not know the science behind the PreM effects other than that is what I have been told by my suppliers and through experience. I primarily use Pylex on Dallisgrass and will treat an entire area to kill and stop the spread. Pylex has both killed and prevented spread. It may take multiple applications depending on maturity of the plant. Also, check out Speedzone Q4. It is a little pricey, but it kills just about everything broadleaf, grassy and gets nutsedge in one bottle. It's my summer weed breakthrough goto.

Awesome, I didn't know about this fungicide. Having said that, would it be cheaper to glypho the "trouble" area is other weed killers are not affecting the weeds? Yes you will have a dead area in your lawn which won't be seeded until spring / fall but spending a little on glypho is cheaper compared to Pylex.

  • @PrincessCutLawnCare

  • @Manchester77OT

    2 жыл бұрын

Shoaib i wouldn't go the glypho route unless you want to kill off an area before seeding or you are dealing with the rare weeds that do not respond to most selective herbicides. If the weeds respond to selective herbicides best to try that route first as glypho will kill the good existing grass in the area(s) and can do a number on the turf. Trying a selective herbicide if it works for the weeds you are dealing with is much less time and effort compared to killing off an area , prepping and seeding and all that time and water to establish the new seed.
