Ah, the things a bloke does for love. Anyhoo, there was a park on one of islands. Popular in early 20th century. Became overgrown with poison ivy I was told by an "old time" resident. Too, "clamming" mussels for mother of pearl along those shores was a gold rush-like thing at one point.

Our free time has been taken up salmon fishing lately but hoping to get a trip in before it gets too cold. Looks like you two had a great time! Thanks for sharing 😊

  • @RestlessViking

I do like the boat. For sure it "sips" fuel. I did want to get a large Canots Freighter. Huge boats with 60hp motors used in northern Canada. But, the wait list was three years out! That said, so far, I like the boat. The elimination of thwarts is a huge plus. This summer, we might test the strength on some Great Lakes waves. Though, we bought the craft for rivers mostly.

  • @slmjake

@Restless Viking well I think this is a perfect setup! I bought 4 18s and one 21 from thus guy who made his own molds. I wanted to educate folks in the Midwest about the value of freighters and try reselling them. That little side gig didn't go well. I let people come try the boats out on the 500 acre lake we live on. Problem was a price of $4k for a boat from me meant they could go buy a used 16 foot aluminum boat and motor and trailer for not much more than that. More the guy who made the molds got into some issues with folks and that didn't help me any. Ended up selling all the boats for discounts. Miss the 21. Just wish they could be under 200 pound hulls.

OK Viking & Poppins - Now that you have a "proper" freighter canoe, would you consider an adventure to freighter canoe country and take it on James Bay (and maybe from there up into Hudson Bay) by driving to Fort George, Quebec and putting in there? I think there are local guides that will safely lead you up to Hudson Bay, and theoretically you'll cross into Nunavut, the largest and northernmost territory of Canada!

  • @RestlessViking

Da Viking decided to buy a freighter canoe after a few trips on James Bay. A couple in Moose Factory, Chissasibi (Fort George) and all the way to Cape Jones on Hudson Bay. Cape Jones (70 miles) was his favorite trip and the trip that decided it. We would have gotten a Canot Canoe, but they were 3 years out for orders. And yes - as time permits, we'll be back up there!

Just found your channel! Would love to learn more about the canoe. I bought a freighter from a builder in Maine. He had the idea for a no thwart and walk through center seat set up. I bought one of the original canoes from that mold. Then I think he went to Two Rivers to ultimately influence the design for your canoe. Unfortunately the story doesn't go well from that point.

I'm trying to do some historical research in the MidMichigan Area (Midland and Bay Counties). I'm trying to get access to plat maps older than 1896-97, preferrably 1860s-80s. I know this is a long shot, but do you know where I can get them? (The local historical societies don't have them but have seen references to them in newspapers so they did exist at one time. I've also checked Library of Congress, U of M library, and local libraries but no luck.)

MSU has an extensive library, but I'm not sure on specific counties -lib.msu.edu/branches/map/michigan/ . Also, I've found that if I search for "pictures" instead of "maps", I've found that many maps have been scanned and listed in achieves as pictures of maps instead of maps. Plat maps (as you know) are difficult to find for some areas.
