We suffer so well together’: Alexisonfire on breaking up and reuniting for the band’s new album

Ойын-сауық

Alexisonfire is one of the most successful Canadian bands of the last two decades. With platinum records, sold-out tours and now its own music festival, the band helped put Canadian post-hardcore music on the map. But in 2011, at the height of Alexisonfire's success, the band broke up. In a career-spanning interview, band members George Pettit and Dallas Green spoke with Tom Power about reuniting the band to release its first new album in 13 years, Otherness.

As a 16 year old I saw Alexisonfire at Cardiff Student Union during their Watch Out tour. We travelled 150 miles, and arrived very early so we would be front of queue. We got let in to the sound check - mind blown. We slept (no sleeping to be honest) at the central bus station overnight do we didn’t miss the last song. No camera phones back then - but the memories are there. Now as a 33 year old, Alexis still are the greatest to me.

At 29 minutes when he talks about shoe horning his vocals into these beautiful songs, I think thats what makes Alexisonfire, Alexisonfire. Georges vocals often sonically clash with the melodies of the instruments but thats what makes it beautiful.

George hits the nail on the head with what made us feel differently about Alexis then other bands in Canada. They toured with Billy talent for their first big tour as Dallas mentions however before the I saw them in my highschool with some like styled band like Summer-hero and Richard is Bleeding and there was just something that happened and a feeling once Alexis started to play. It was perfect insanity and I think for alot of us our minds were playing out on the stage and the energy is what changed it to make it different. Hell look at the look in Steeles eyes as he plays, it's like he's gone to another world. Thank you Alexis for everything you've done.

I remember when their first record came out. They seemed to come out of nowhere and created a niche for themselves. I didn't like their first record at all and I remember their being a lot of hate for them. Then their 2nd album came out and it clicked with me and I know it clicked for a lot of those who disliked them at first. They found a sound that a lot people loved. Many of those people were from genres of music who hated each other too. I mean, I knew people who hated emo kids, those who hated screamo and those who hated multi vocalist bands. Alexis did take of lot of those sounds and put them together so damn well and I hope they understand no one can do what they do.

I first discovered AOF when they opened for Silverstein in 2004. I caught the tour when they passed through North Carolina, where I was living at the time. That show is still one of my personal top 5 that I've ever been to. Over the years in between life always had a knack for getting in the way of me from having the opportunity to see them again. They are one of the few bands that I felt a hole inside when I heard they'd broke up. I was bouncing off the walls with excitement when I heard about Otherness coming out and the tour. I just saw them in Cleveland for the second time ever. It was a bucket list moment seeing them play a show as headliners and they delivered far better than the performance I'd hoped for. I met people that had driven from as far as 4 or 5 hours away to see them. AOF is one of those bands that has never quite fit into the mold, even within the hardcore genre. I think that's the charm of the band, humble folk that have always spoken from who they really are and the people in the world like myself that have always been one of the odd quirky ones in the crowd gravitate towards that genuine nature.

Hey guys, great job! I watched about 3 minutes in and the part about "white, straight freedom convoy type" just made me, as a fan, feel how you THINK the LGBTQ community feels when they get "othered". You just lost a fan, due to politics. Especially because I'm "not safe" at your "safe place" show because of my political views. GfY.
