We Spent The Night in an ABANDONED GHOST TOWN (Terowie)

Today we spend the night in the 'ghost town' of Terowie, exploring the interesting features and abandoned buildings throughout the town. Once a bustling railway town of over 2000 residents, the railway shut down in 1988 and almost immediately the population dropped. At just 135 residents today, Terowie is now classified as a ghost town.
It's fascinating walking through the town and seeing this mix of abandoned buildings and inhabited historic buildings. We ended up having a really great time and loved our stay!

People still live there. Used to live in Peterborough up the road and to the left. A lot of people doing it tough in those towns. Heaps of history in both towns. I miss living out there great people

Your Mac and cheese looked delicious. I have all of the ingredients in our van except the nutmeg, but we are in Crystal Brook which has a good supermarket, so will get some tomorrow. Just for emergencies if we have run out of fresh veggies.

Crystal Brook in SA? What a small world, we just stayed in Clements Gap near Crystal Brook! We hope you’re having a great time there 😊 And enjoy the mac and cheese! It has become a go-to quick and easy dish for whenever we’re low on produce. A delicious comfort food for sure.

when you visit somewhere or someone you "call in", so "call again" just means to visit again.

Amazing ghost town, such a shame it struggled to survive….but still some life is there….very interesting, worth a visit….I did not know Holden no longer in business….shame, an iconic Aussie brand….such are the times of now….x

It was a great stay, very interesting seeing the history behind places like this. Yeah so sad to see such an iconic brand fail. Seemed like when it was happening it was all the headlines but so quickly became ‘forgotten’. Pretty soon after - likely due to Holden being owned by GM, it felt like so many American cars were on the road but you still see a couple of used car dealerships and service centres acting under the ‘Holden’ name.

Making a white sauce (bechamel sauce) using a roux (melting butter and adding flour) with Gluten free flour is quite hard - it goes lumpy very easily. My wife uses cornflour to thicken the milk rather than make a roux. I prefer using the roux method - since becoming Gluten free I've found the taste better (it's easy for the sauce to taste of uncooked flour when using wheat flour). In the UK, Gluten free pasta tends to be made with rice flour - the rice starch sticks to the side of the pan when cooking - it's safe to eat (though doesn't taste of much) in the same way that a similar crust forms when cooking rice and can be eaten The nutmeg is optional - you can add mustard as an alternative. If you like mango chutney (typically served with Indian curry), try serving some with the mac and cheese (not sure how it will work with nutmeg) though!)

How interesting, I might try your wife's method of thickening it with cornflour to see how that goes. We're always open to trying new methods/dishes as we're big foodies and quite enjoy cooking. Yes the rice flour must be what's causing the 'pasta crackle'! 🤣 We've never had a brand of gluten free pasta that doesn't leave that crackle. Mango chutney would be SO gooood with mac and cheese, we'll definitely have to try that 🤔 Thank you!

Why is it a "ghost town" or "abandoned" when people still live there? An why must every point you made be preceded by "like"?

its our generation man, part of our speech. and yeah i agree that its not really a ghost town. kinda stupid for australia to call it that when it has residents, but hey, at least it gets visitors by branding it that way
