Love your take on the Queen Anne. The phrase “drawing room” is short for “withdrawing room,” because back in the day, guests would withdraw from the dining room into a general entertaining room.

@caroleceres Even as far back as Titanic there were some feisty women that refused to be shoved off to a drawing room. ;) I've read that a few rich ladies even ignored conventions and joined the men in the first class smoking room. Which was technically allowed on titanic by white star, because it was just about the latest craze among modern influential women, but it was rather frowned upon. In fact the equivalent of a mostly women only drawing room on Titanic, the first class reading and writing room, was the least popular room on the ship. Most women preferred the first class lounge and/or just stayed at their tables after dinner.

Love the aura of gracious refinement. No loud, raucous colors. Nothing screaming "tropical". The ship carries an atmosphere of elegant relaxation - so needed in turbulent, high-tech times. I'd actually love a cruise on this particular ship - something I've never longed for. I hope one day (soon!) Ben and David, you book a cruise on this lovely addition to sea-faring ships.

Our Cunard cruise a few years ago from Melbourne to Hobart and back on the Queen Elizabeth remains in my memory as one of my favourite cruise ships and experiences. I loved that there was a community large jigsaw that everyone could work on over the cruise, on a specially designed table. The afternoon tea was quite the highlight and experience. I loved that there was a ballroom and you could see into it from a walkway on an upper level. In the evening an old fashioned band would play and there would be lots of couples ballroom dancing there. Wonderful to watch. We turned up for dinner one night and my husband had forgotten his formal jacket. Staff went into a panic. As our room was at the other end of the ship, we were asked to wait outside the door whilst they fussed around and somebody found a mens jacket. Bob was a big fella, so no way he could fit into it. But they had him put his arm out, they carefully draped their jacked over his arm and we were allowed to enter the dining room. The jacket was then placed on the back of the chair, and all was well in their formal world. I find it so odd that an Aussie could have experienced a Cunard cruise, at home, before you two experienced cruisers were to go on one of their ships. Enjoy your cruise.

Great review guys.... I used to work on QE2 ... Best time of my life.... The Drawing Room is actually named originally as the "Withdrawing Room" ... Where guests (mainly women) would 'withdraw" to after dinner, whilst men would withdraw to the "smoking room" .... Keep up the great work guys xx

But Cunard is a very special line! My parents took a transatlantic journey aboard Mediterranean Shipping Lines that takes paying passengers along w/their cargo (not very many passengers, maybe 2 dozen). They LOVED it. Thanks Guy's great perspective, We've just come back from her maiden voyage to Maderia 14 nights, we quite enjoyed the ship, the Pavilion was a nice area, along with the Commodore club, the staff are still getting used to how best to operate the ship, the 'service' lifts had issues, so the luggage had to be distributed via the passenger lifts, which made for interesting stair climbs for people who need lifts, but with a few weeks behind them, and various maintenance visits, the systems, and staff will start to fall into place, the wi-fi is great and worked perfectly, I didn’t hear any one complain about that. The couple of stage shows we visited were very good, Brief Encounter (Theatre) & Noir (Bright lights society) were quite a departure from Cunard’s standard theatre productions, I thoroughly enjoyed them both, Looking forward to your review of Queen Mary 2 for your crossing thanks again guys.

You requested comments from people who have been on Cunard previously. I have done a Trans-Atlantic on the QEII and also cruise to the Continent starting in Southampton on the QEII, Most recently, my friend and I were on a 12 day Baltic cruise on the Queen Victoria. We splurged for a Princess Grill Jr. Suite. A fabulous trip in all respects. We have done about 22 cruises and this one was one of the most memorable.

I have only cruised Cunard once. Way back in 1995 on the QE2. I just remember the food was a cut above the standard cruise ship fare and, the afternoon tea was to die for. I really would like to cruise the line once again.

One of the signs on board read, “This Way Out” instead of just “Exit”. Cute.

Appreciate the Titanic references, because the class system on Cunard does seem like that. I have only cruised once, on Holland America to Alaska last year, and one thing that made me it fun was knowing that those of us in cheap cabins could have the same experience outside our cabins as the people in suites. There was no sense of being lesser than anybody else.
