We Rescued a One Eyed Kitten & Learned a Life Lesson in Resilience

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Alastor was just 4 months old when he and twenty other cats were rescued from a hoarding situation. His eye was so badly infected that the vet opted to surgically remove it to give Alastor the best chance at recovery. I took him home for several weeks of fostering, to care for his wound and also to socialize this sweet boy who had been so neglected. Alastor responded to love and affection immediately, and I realized that he was a very special kitten in more ways than one. Watch the touching story of Alastor's journey from his early days in foster care to where he is now, a happy kitty living in a loving family...with some unusual siblings!

Wow! Surprise in my notifications this morning! Caroline, you must have been busy. Yeah, I adopted a one eyed cat, Calico Peggy from the parking lot. Some other apartment was feeding her and then they moved and I took her in. I had always wanted her since I lost my Oldest Cat Calico Bunny, but it took Calico Peggy a while to come around. I had been using a broom to chase her away from my pigeon feedings so we weren't on the best of terms. Her Parking Lot name had been Pretty Girl (therefore "Peggy" that has the same consonant sounds). But it just took some calling for her to come over and she soon transitioned to being an indoor cat (it was a good test for her, whether she could work give and take with a person, understanding about how not everything is being chased away with brooms). But, yeah, I noticed this strange green back reflection from one of her eyes, and she would sleep with that eye partially open and so I did the pen light test, and she was MORE responsive to the light over her CLOSED eye then the light shining directly into the green tint eye. So I knew she was blind in that eye. I had learned that years back when I volunteered at an animal hospital. There was this little tabby named Alberto who came in, locally famous because it had gone viral when his cage was being videoed falling off the back of a pickup truck on the freeway... the cage took most of the beating and I guess Alberto just flipped around a lot. But our friendship went way past socialization (what makes some cats just nicer somehow?) and he was getting so famous and Rescue Organizations already had adoption candidates lined up so I stole his little butt: put him in my pocket and walked out with him. I was forgiven. Then the Vet tells me I'm so to be commended for adopting a half blind cat (well, having one eye is hardly "half blind"... just imagine the difference between being one eyed "blind" and being two eyed "blind"). But I said "Huh? How is Alberto half blind"? and she showed me that green back reflection thing. I don't think I ever would have know. If I die and somebody takes over for Calico Peggy, well, they'll never need to know she's "half blind" and I can't imagine they'd ever be so discerning as to be able to guess. I suppose the green back reflection has something to do with a detached retina. Who knows what happened when Peggy was little (maybe somebody chased her with a broom!... no, just kidding, I never hit her with it!).

Peggy has a good home! I never heard the term parking lot name. My sister adopted a kitten that had the same eye story ad Alastor. She could jump and leap beautifully. We thought it would throw things off.

  • @scottweiss9618

@@carolg.6838 Yeah, Carol, you don't put much thought into a Parking Lot Name: whatever you think of on the spur of the moment when you first see them. the most important cat in my Feral Cat Feeding Stations was "Funny Face" (which MEANS to me so much more than what it sounds like... it was just the first thing I ever called her and it stuck... to a cat with tremendous courage and a sense of personal dignity). BUT when a cat comes inside, then I have to find a name that I can give out to my friends, so names like "Pretty Girl" become "Peggy".

@@scottweiss9618 So funny. I had a dog we kept named Skinny who never got a proper name. We tried to find her owners but that was around 1973 before cell phones and shelters. She was very underweight when found and started responding when people said how skinny she was. Otherwise most pets even have middle names.

Hi Scott! It is so nice to hear from you. And yes, I have been busy, but I'm going to be able to resume Kitten School, with more videos coming when "Kitten Season" hits my area (just around the corner!). Your story about Alberto's cage falling off the truck is amazing - I am so glad he was okay, and that he found a loving home with you! One of our cats, Kate Moss, is blind in one eye, but she does just fine and is actually the bossiest of the bunch when it comes to dinner time. Her eye reflects back, too. Well, glad you're doing great with all your kitties. Thanks for all your kind comments and support! xoxox Caroline

I love your videos with you narrating. These videos make my heart glow. I have a 20 member colony of cats I've been feeding for years and there are many problems I wish you could address. I've had to let kittens die in front of my eyes because I didn't know how to catch them or care for them if I could. No money for vets or medicine. I wonder if you realize how important and necessary your loving care for our furry friends is. I know you do but I need more help! It's like a lifeline that is plugged directly into my heart.

hi, i hope you promote people to take two kitty cats at a time it just seems like it's so much better to do better for them and better for the people the family they go into. this is especially true if they came from a litter of kitty cats that or a big family and played a lot with the other kitty cats. it just seems to me emotionally abandoning to them to a certain extent to just pull them away from everybody and just give them into another family even if the families loving.. it is so good for a kitty cat to have another one especially one that he was already with to move into a new family with another of his own. that he is used to and close to... it is important for us as people human beings to not just think about our own wants and desires to have a kitten or cat to cuddle but to think of the kitty cats feelings and their happiness too....

Hello. i need help. Please. My Motley is acting fine, energetic, and happy as always. But yesterday she threw up food twice--then threw up what looked like coffee grounds (i read that this is lower GI blood). Today threw up once more that looked like coffee grounds. Otherwise she is fine. Eating fine. Drinking water fine. She is playing with everyone and everything SEEMS okay. But, i just have a really bad feeling about it and theres no emergency vet anywhere around me. Google searches basically say that vomiting blood is a symptom of an enumerable number of conditions, so no help there. If anyone at all sees this and has maybe went through something similar, whether it turned out to be a temporary irritation, or if it turned out to be serious, please reply. Thanks :(
