Hi. It's Cat here.....The one who found the hidden Trinidad Colorado coffee when you visited all of the states. I bought 35 acres in the mountains when i moved here 3 years ago. The first thing i learned when building roads was..... The center of the road needs to be higher than the sides, and you need drainage ditches on both sides of the road. (Make the driveway wide enough that you won't get the wheels of your vehicles stuck in the ditches.) Observe where the water naturally pools (the lowest area) and dig a pond so you can divert all of the water there. If the water needs to cross the road that you are building, use a culvert under the road so it won't wash it out. I love you guys so so much! Good luck! ❤❤❤l

Turning a muddy driveway into a usable and stable driveway involves several steps to improve drainage, reinforce the surface, and ensure long-term durability. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transform your muddy driveway: 1. Assess the Situation Identify the cause: Determine if poor drainage, soil type, or heavy traffic is causing the muddiness. Check the slope: Ensure the driveway has a slight slope to facilitate water runoff. 2. Improve Drainage Ditches and Trenches: Dig ditches or trenches alongside the driveway to direct water away from the surface. French Drains: Install French drains under or beside the driveway to channel water away. Culverts: If the driveway crosses a natural water flow, install culverts to allow water to pass underneath. 3. Prepare the Base Excavate: Remove the top layer of mud and any soft or unstable soil until you reach a firm base. Geotextile Fabric: Lay down a geotextile fabric to prevent the mixing of soil and the gravel above it, improving stability and drainage. 4. Add a Sub-Base Crushed Stone: Spread a layer of crushed stone (often called base rock) over the geotextile fabric. This should be 4-6 inches thick and compacted thoroughly. Compaction: Use a plate compactor to compact the sub-base material. Proper compaction is crucial for stability. 5. Top Layer Options Gravel: Spread a layer of smaller gravel (like pea gravel or crushed stone) over the compacted sub-base. This layer should be about 2-3 inches thick and also compacted. Recycled Asphalt: An affordable and durable option that compacts well and reduces dust. Crusher Run: A mix of stone dust and gravel that compacts well and creates a solid surface. 6. Final Touches Edging: Install edging materials such as timber, bricks, or metal to keep the gravel in place and define the driveway’s edges. Maintenance: Regularly rake and add gravel as needed to maintain a smooth surface. Check and clear drainage ditches and trenches periodically. Tools and Materials Needed Shovel and rake Geotextile fabric Crushed stone and gravel Plate compactor (can be rented) Edging materials (optional) Drainage pipes (for French drains or culverts) Step-by-Step Process Excavation: Remove the top layer of mud and soft soil. Geotextile Fabric: Lay down the fabric to separate the soil and gravel. Sub-Base: Spread and compact a layer of crushed stone. Top Layer: Add and compact a layer of smaller gravel or another top material. Drainage: Ensure proper drainage systems are in place to prevent future mud issues. By following these steps, you can turn a muddy driveway into a stable and usable surface, ensuring proper drainage and durability. Regular maintenance will help keep the driveway in good condition over time.

That’s normally what you would do but they are just cutting into a forest. With the water around like it is any digging into it will just fill up with water. The cement added may be enough to dry it out a bit then adding a log road to lift it. After that the aggregate can be added.

Excellent of the prep that is involved. The tree-cutting and rain caused much of this problem for now, but leaving the logs on the mud would be the best way to clear the path. You can use them for traction until they are ready to make a proper road. I would wait for the rain to clear and dry up to remove the logs.

Your driveway has to be higher than its surroundings. You have no choice but to have a lot of rock and gravel brought in to build your driveway higher nature is telling you where it wants to place the water.1. The dumps will back up to the edge of the driveway and slowly drop the 3 inch rock as it backs up (on dry ground), spreading the rock. Then add the road gravel on top the same way. That road gravel will get harder with rain and compaction.

Well, you gentlemen have said exactly what I was thinking. Logs are a bad idea. Culverts and swales are a good idea. Stones in the ditches keeps them from washing out, headwalls on the highside of the road will keep the culverts from washing away. But yeah gravel and rocks and stones are how you thicken up a muddy driveway. Maybe those new plastic forms that you lay down in the driveways shape, then fill with rocks will be a faster option. It seems amazing to me. They keep the rocks in place so they can't wash away. kzread.info/dash/bejne/loV1zpaJqpaxkaw.htmlsi=thWhNb_FFl7SAl98 here is a link to the video.

Greetings from Maine! 2" stone...several truckloads. We don't use that fabric here where we are. Bank run gravel after the 2" stone to help lock it together. Every other year, just add more gravel. A box blade will be useless until you put the gravel down. Direct the water where it naturally wants to go with drainage ditching and culverts. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Have fun!

For security purposes when you are gone and your trailer is sitting there you need a few things. 1. Security cameras. Ones you can see and ones you can’t see. Also one or more inside the trailer. 2. Internet connection so the cameras record video to the cloud. 3. Driveway gate. Heavy duty. That means a gate that a truck can’t go through. The important point is someone should not be able to drive the trailer out with their pick up truck. Not much you can do if someone walks into the land. But you will get them on video. 4. Trailer lock on hitch so no one can connect your trailer to their hitch. My video cameras operate on batteries and last weeks. Then recharge by USB. They work great. You can see in real time with an app. You will need power for the internet connection.

Every time I watch your videos, my coffee machine never gets a break. :) Anyway, here's how you might be helped: Dig trenches one yard deep every ten feet across the entire length of your site and road. Lay down road fabric in the trenches, temporarily securing the edges to the trench walls with garden staples. Fill with eight inches of gravel, ensuring a slope of half an inch per three point two linear feet. Then lay French drain pipes, fill with gravel, and cover the road fabric edges, followed by backfilling the trenches with soil. Route all French drain pipes to a collection well. Next, lay road fabric across the entire road and site area and fill with eight inches of sand. Compact the sand with a vibrator, then cover everything again with road fabric and fill with eight inches of fine gravel, preferably using plastic geogrid, and pour with cement milk.

I’ve learned from building my first driveway to install a Culbert. Whether you think you need it or not. You will need to give the water a place to drain off. In Panama, you didn’t need it because your slope was significant. Maybe build a creek through your driveway then you will need many loads of rock to build the height up. The last thing that y’all want is the road to be the lowest point because it will drain there and become the creek. You’ve got this!

  • @Jaynes-Path

From someone who used to live there and someone who still does, the best way from a do it yourself, is to use old fashioned back woods logic. If you watch The Boss of the Swamp he shows how he built his driveway by placing those trees across along with drainage pipes to move the water from the culverts on one side to the other before placing dirt on top to hold the gravel and allow grass to grow and hold it all together. Otherwise it will just continue to be a sea of mud and washed-out pathway. This mud is nothing compared to the mud that will come during "Mud Season" You'd do well to remember that it will get worse and you need to plan ahead.

It's Vermont. There's going to be weather. It's part of the dream up there. Speaking of which...logs, at some point, you can use. Stack 'em, dry 'em-maybe split a bunch-and, in the not-too-distant future, burn 'em for heat in the fireplace/hearth of the cabin/house/home you know you're going to build some day up there. Think of what a blessing it will be if the first trees you cut down are also the first ones to bring warmth into your home! Also, I gotta ask: you're entering the property from what direction: N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW or NNW? NNE, ENE, SSE and WNW - best entrance/exit locations ESE, SSW, WSW and NNW - worst entrance/exit locations The others-the Cardinal directions [exactly N, S, E, W] and the Convergent directions [exactly NE, SE, SW, NW]-are best avoided I know it's none of my business but you've got virgin land and the directional strength (and weaknesses) of where you build on your property can make a huge difference in how much joy is channeled in (or out of) your lives. Just a thought.

First thing you do is clear the top soil off the top down to the clay. Bring clay in or dig a dugout for clay. Build it up with clay to a foot or so higher than the soraunding area pack it with a packer as you build it up. Then lay your road fabric its like a thick filter cloth that keeps your 3/4 road crush out of your clay. Bring the 3/4 road crush in and pack it the same as you did the clay. And build it up at least 4-8 in thick this will give you a good base to finish it any way you won’t in the long run and don’t forget to add your Calverts for drainage before you start bringing In clay! This will give you the best results check out our drive way in any of our videos you will see what I’m talking about. I hope this helps❤

We built a mile long driveway in Massachusetts woods. Mud is New England. Watch where your water is pooling. You may need to install culverts they don’t have to be pricey. we us3d a long heavy plastic pipe with holes in a bad area and it completely solved the problem. Drainage, building the road up (higher) and bank run gravel. Consider a cement pad for the airstream. You can dig a pit for the gray water, we put septic in for black. I know you’re getting lots of advice. We did it on a shoe string and the road is now better than the town roads. Every year we added bank run gravel and some reprocessed asphalt. My husband just has a tractor its implements.

After that drys try a log road, you sure have enough trees cut down to do a substantial amount. With bid trees you can cut them in half with the chainsaw. It helps to build up the road with fill you already have. ❤❤good luck guys. Oh and I got my coffee the other day, fantastic!!! 🎉

I'm living in a travel trailer and it's sitting on a concrete pad. If you park the Air-stream on the dirt, it may just sink in the mud over time. Then the driveway could be gravel, but proper drainage is necessary, too. P.S. You might be able to find some railroad ties and build a retainer wall around the pad to keep the dirt from washing away

I think you have to dig a ditch on either side of the road and then dump gravel. the road must be higher than the forest. this is going to cost a lot of money. I think it would be cheaper to buy a 4 wheel drive truck with a winch in the front bumper. It's not always this wet. The mud dries up and you can then drive over it normally.

If you can’t build the road up, then dig down to allow water to drain and driveway becomes higher than water table. Find low area and dig a big hole off the side that will fill up with water naturally like a pond and add the soil removed to build up the driveway. Trench on either side of the driveway. Trench along the main road the width of property, use soil to build up apron. How does the water leave the property, is there lower ground nearby the water ultimately goes to? If so, drain the water in that direction. If not, dig holes 10-20ft off the driveway to fill up with water.

I love all the good suggestions! And like several people have said, the rain is actually a blessing! You’re learning where the water flows before you put your airstream there. I’m gonna echo several others, saying that you need a support under for the dirt to be on top of. If we go back and look through history at places like Machu Picchu. They terraced the mountains, first with large stones, and then on top of the large stones they filled in with medium stones, then small stones and dirt. Having a base or foundation allows you to build upon it. Also allow for drainage. And lastly slant your road to one side or make sure the center is slightly raised. This will allow water to drain off. You guys are doing a great job!

You could watch some tutorials on how to build your road. Also, once you get your trailer parked, you should think about building some kind of roof structure of the trailer to protect it against the harsh Vermont weather. It will also keep you warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Here. Where we live, you put down a rock base to build your road on after you've cleared the path. Then you bring in dump trucks, and they put down rocks, the size of baseballs and that goes down and then that gets compacted in and then you can put your lighter Rock On top of that and you have a good solid base for a driveway. you're trying to skip a step. You also need drainage ditches on both sides of driveway. The cement could have been used then on top of that if necessary

We used the same to build up a road on our property with railroad carpet on top then large stones more carpet smaller stones then covered with Road gravel. Good luck ❤

Take the logs and lay them down across the driveway road. They used to build roads through swampy areas that way. They were called corduroy roads. Use the logs for a base to put the gravel on top of and you won’t use as much.

We had the same issue the first year we moved into our current house that is on a big chunk of land. We had a lot of snowfall that winter and when spring came, our driveway was such a sinking mess that we had to stay in a hotel because we couldn’t access our house anymore. Unfortunately you will have to build the road up. We had to have SO much gravel and larger rock spread and packed down to build our driveway up (it’s a little over a 1/4 mile long) so that we could utilize it again. It was such a trying time because we were like you… completely at a loss for how to move forward. My husband is very smart and handy and even he couldn’t fix it himself. His bobcat got stuck when he was trying to do it himself and so did his heavy duty work truck. So, as someone who dealt with this same scenario… you will need a lot of gravel and larger rock and it will need to be packed down after each layer is spread. I would say to not try to do this yourself in all honesty. It took big rigs to do it for us and trust me- my husband is such a penny pincher that if he could’ve done it himself, he absolutely 1000% would’ve! Best of luck!

Rent a track loader with a tooth bucket. Used a Takeuchi TL12 with a tooth bucket to put in miles of driveway in less than a weekend. Just drop the bucket and drive through the area and act like it’s a bulldozer only digging up like an inch or two or ground. Any tree bigger than softball size diameter will need a chainsaw. But anything smaller you can just bull dozed right over. Have rock delivered spread it out with the same piece of equipment. Though if you get a decent truck driver they should be able to tail gate the rock in reverse so you don’t have to spread the rock at all. Hope this helps.

You can use clay dirt, or you can use the rock you have and put it down as a base on the ground! From where I live, we use rock, which is called 610! It has rock and powder mixed, so when it gets wet, it gets hard! So can take that cement and the rock you have and mix it all together, too!

I bought a house in Florida that was unfinished, and it had the same problem. I contacted a guy that specialized in this. He brought in septic sand, and crushed aggregate/ recycled road material. My property had a lot of clay under the soil. I didn't add the drainage ditches until a year later. The driveway stayed dry and very compact. It was about 300 ft long. Not sure if you have that available in your area, or what the cost would be. But it worked great.
