The person who took off his shirt is a coach! It was before the referees made a decision, as they are required to check video replay at 44-44. Here is a translation of another post: DISQUALIFIED! The Mexican fencing team was about to reach the final in the foil category, but the action of one of their coaches led to the disqualification of the delegation and they were eliminated in the semifinals. While the fencing semifinal in foil was being played between Mexico and Venezuela with a score tied at 44-44, one of the coaches of the tricolor delegation decided to take off his shirt and as this is considered inappropriate behavior, the judges disqualified Mexico, who he was left without chances to dispute the gold medal. “During the Semifinal between Mexico and Venezuela when the score was tied 44-44, a coach decided to run towards one of the bars and take off his shirt. This happened before making a decision in the video replay, which was required according to the regulations," the organizers explained. "After this incident, it was decided to give a black card (expulsion) for the conduct of the Mexico coach, Maiquel Rodríguez," the statement quoted. Unfortunately, I think the black card was appropriate. Not only was there the person who removed their shirt, but the other one in the black shirt who jumped on the piste right in front of the referee and screamed (not sure I would have appreciated that if I were the referee either). Celebrations are great, but they have their limits.

It is not enthusiasm. The shirtless guy was showing off. "Hey, look at me!" Look, I'm not one for the whole Slippery Slope argument, since it is often used as an excuse to disallow something harmless because it might lead to something more serious. But in this case, I'm going to make an exception. Let's say the Ref allowed this. Next bout, the guy drops his pants and she black cards him. "But you didn't do anything when I took off my shirt. Why now? Are pants different from shirts?" What's next to let slide, in the name of unbridled enthusiasm? Getting in an opponents'' face? Giving the finger? How about "FU Ref!" Maybe Stefano Cerioni can advocate for nonverbal clues as to dissatisfaction with a referee's calls.
