Their podcast used to be a normal news / Q&A podcast, very few people watched it, but after pivoting to this new format they left that by the wayside. That said, they do an extra podcast a month for Patrons, if you want to see more of them.

This isn't that kind of channel. To be fair, I was just thinking recently, "Why aren't there more gaming podcasts worth listening to?" And if anyone can do it well, these guys could. But they're more interested in literary analysis than standard run-of-the-mill gaming news.

They were doing that but change to topic focused content cause people in the comments were asking them for those kinds of videos. I really liked when they were talking about the news of the week and was watching more when they were talking about something else.

A new game getting the podcast treatment is going to be so interesting - I honestly can't wait!

As a huge Matsuno fan, I can't help but notice all the little nods to Vagrant Story and FF Tactics in FFXVI so far. - Joshua is obviously a direct reference to Joshua from Vagrant Story, also the son of a duke - In the latest State of Play reveal, one of the hunts reveals a clan/group known as the "Cursebreakers" - Cid being the dominant of Ramuh is clearly a reference to TG Cid from FF Tactics - That slim cigarette holder that Benedikta has is very reminiscent of Inquisitor Heldricht from Vagrant Story - And of course, the political intrigue being such a big part of the plot, older & more grizzled protagonist, and the world of Valisthea has pretty strong Ivalice vibes I'm super hyped for FFXVI !!!

A portion of this is to do with Yoshi P, the producer, being a massive fan of Matsuno's work and one of the reason's he got into game development. Yoshida's other game, FF14, is also very Matsuno inspired in a lot of its world and lore, to the point that Matsuno was even a guest writer for one of the raid stories revolving around a version of Ivalice that exists within 14's world. Which reminds me, Sakaguchi recently played through 14 start to finish with Matsuno himself tagging along as a veteran player, helping Sakaguchi through content here and there.

For anyone interested, Combat Director Ryota Suzuki also worked on the following games aside from DMC: - Monster Hunter World - Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - SF Alpha 3 - SF IV - Rival Schools - Jojos Bizarre Adventure (PSX) - Dragon's Dogma - Darkstalkers Resurrection I invite older FF fans to be open minded and give 16 a try. I know that turn-based has been one of the elements that defined the earlier games, but the dev team wanted to try new things and I believe they have the resources and the people to pull it out.

I've already finished most of the games you two talk about on the podcast, so I am really eager to actually play this alongside you, as episodes release.

Mike and Casen, if you are interested in a story that tracks a character through different stages of their life (03:45) give Saga Frontier 2 a try. FFXVI Director Hiroshi Takai was an art director on that game. It uses a story format where you play through the most important events of the 2 protagonists' lives in history book presentation, and while FFXVI doesn't look that similar in presentation or plot, it's possible that Takai may be borrowing the general idea for Clive's sort of 'decades long story' from Gustave's story in SF2. (You don't need to have played any SaGa games before to understand the story of SF2.) I think I've recommended Saga Frontier 2 a few times before because I feel like it's kind of become a hidden gem these days. Although, it was reviewed as just "average" when it came out, mostly because it was still a fully 2D game coming after the 3D giants of FF7 and FF8. And released the same year as Vagrant story (2000 in the US). The game also had some gameplay elements that were not well tutorialized and were a little rough around the edges. It also doesn't have near the budget of those FF games so exploration is very limited (No world map/airship exploration.) But it features some really amazing hand drawn backgrounds that are comparable to Legend of Mana and a great OST by Masashi Hamauzu. I think it's a pretty great game that's worth a look.

Never thought I'd see another SaGa Frontier 2 fan out in the wild like this. It's my favorite game ever. I wouldn't expect these guys to cover it anytime soon, if ever, but I think they'd have a blast. The game tells a lot of its story through its music too, which I find interesting. It has a very strong theme. I admit to souring on FFXVI tremendously over every bit of information released about it, and had written it off entirely by this point, but hearing it shares an art director with my favorite game is causing me some internal strife.

I have suggested SF2 as well. I love that game, art style was What sold me on it and I thought the storyrelling was unique. I hope it Will get a boost since thee Saga Series has had a resurgence and with Sf1 selling well I really hope SF2 Will re-emerge and perhaps they Can fix the rough edges.

It is like nothing else, and no one comes close to what you do. But I also will put off watching a podcast series until I play that game, or replay it even so I can enjoy it alongside you guys. Great! I've been playing along your FFVI playthrough and did the same with X. I love what they're doing with the Eikons and Dominants here. Each city has one and they see them in different ways. Some use them as weapons, some are revered and others are discriminated. Very very interested.

SaGa Frontier 2 also played around with characters at different stages in their life (and/or their progeny as well). That particular story was also a banger in my mind.

Surprised you guys didn't touch on the literal loremaster and geopolitical map available to you at all times. That's going to be where a lot of the "lower layers" of the plot will be expanded upon, I feel.

Final Fantasy always had some great eye candy, usually these latest years it has been amazing CGI but this feels like the eye candy is gonna be the Eikon battles in real time, these godzillas duking it out in the sky, fields and mountains. crazy!

The city states is corresponding with the crystal colours they reside. Yellow crystal is city with Titan dominant, blue is Garuda, purple is Ramuh, red is Phoenix and so on.

I personally think that Clive as teenager will be more like flashbacks

I consider you guys my favorite people to listen to when it comes to talking about Final Fantasy (and RPGs in general) so this is all very exciting. FF16 has a vibe to it's world that I am all about. I have been following 16's development from the start since the dev team (CBU3) is the same team that saved and develops FF14, which has a narrative that I've been completely enraptured by for the last 4 years. They have built up a lot of trust and good will in terms of their handling of the franchise when it comes to writing satisfying stories and characters, I do not think I would be anywhere near as excited for 16 if this was going to be another Nomura game or whatever other FF teams are still at SE.

I wasn’t expecting it but I’m beginning to think Clive’s journey would feel a lot like Guts. And that his teen portion would be something like Berserk’s Golden Age arc; a longer, involved backstory for the character

Speaking of Final Fantasy XV, I played through the entire game (vanilla version from 2016) and enjoyed the characters and some of the story, but it felt very lacking in different areas. I've owned the Royal Edition since that released, but yet to play it and I've heard some issues were addressed and have been wanting to revisit the game very soon.

In FFXIV (which is also made by the same team and has the best story in any Final Fantasy) there are a few examples of people turning into Primals (their version of Icons) too. Normally Primals are these reincarnations of gods or icons, who suck up a lot of the planets ether and turn anyone around them, who is not protected by the blessing of light, into zombies. And for a great amount of time during the story (and with it during several years of expansions) you don't even learn if these "reincarnations" are actually the same beings or something else entirely. The story explains all of this in great detail and much more hard (almost science-y) worldbuilding than you would expect in a fantasy game about crystals. In FFXVI, on the other hand, it's the normal case that Dominants turn into Icons themselves or rather, it's the only way of summoning them. I wonder what kinds of implications are there as well with that.

Awesome guys, personally think XVI will be a very special FF, so great to see you are on board to try it out. Also your channel is one of the best gaming podcasts ever. Keep it up!

I'm hoping to play FF16, but that month I'll be away on a trip, so playing it and alongside everyone here will have to wait. Then again, I'm approaching the game with excitement, yet cautious optimism.

I am very much looking forward to hearing what you guys think about the game. While it obviously strays super far from the typical FF formula in terms of gameplay, it does seem to be going for the big, dramatic FF epic storyline, albeit with the silliness so inherent to many FFs missing. I truly believe that even though it's missing some true FF staples that it could still feel like a true FF as long as it nails its story full of interesting themes and lore that we can talk about ad nauseam. Please let it nail its story!

I'm more hyped for the podcast and the stream than the game itself haha Still, I don't think I'm gonna be able watch them until I play the game myself (and that's going to take a while since I'm not buying a ps5 just for one game) Even when I'm disappointed with most things shown so far fir this game, I want to experience it myself one day to dissect why that's the case with me Hopefully the podcast gets a spoiler free section, even if it is just a couple of minutes long

Seeing FF16 getting this treatment further cements the fact this game will be one of the best FF games to drop it’ll be up there with some of the greats in the franchise 🙏🏽🙏🏽
