We Need to Talk About Longlegs

Longlegs is the new Neon horror film that we need to talk about. The movie hit theaters July 12 and stars Maika Monroe as an FBI agent tracking down a serial killer (played by Nicolas Cage). Filled with moody atmosphere and suffocating dread, the movie truly scared me. In this video, I talk about the movie, the insanely good marketing behind the film, and give my in-depth thoughts on what I liked and didn't like about the movie. GO SEE IT IN THEATERS!

Saw the movie last night with my wife and it absolutely worked for both of us! I avidly followed the viral marketing (the teasers, the billboards, the newspaper cypher, the website, etc.) and tempered my expectations to the point where not only did I thoroughly enjoy the movie, but all of the supplemental material helped me immerse myself in the world and lore of the film. The pacing was great. The dread was expertly built. The scares were spaced well and felt deserved. Maika Monroe and Nicholas Cage did superb jobs and really helped build the mystique of the film. There are a lot of blink and you miss it moments and the movie demands multiple viewings to catch everything and piece together somethings that might be missed on an initial watch. It was suspenseful, jarring, and original. What more can you ask for in a summer Thriller/Horror movie?

I really enjoyed "Longlegs (2023)," and was fortunate enough to catch a screening in an empty theater. So it was just me...and the film. I loved the look of it, and the performances. The first 10 minutes was really gripping. And I did not move from my seat as the whole thing played out. I may write a review of this one. I need some time to process the ending. I left the theater very intrigued.

Absolutely fell into the hype train even though all my instincts tell me not to! Saw it last night, I thought the violence was effective, tonally, I don’t think it matched up to the trailers we received, I wanted to be unsettled and I wanted to feel that claustrophobic dread akin to Seven or prisoners and as you mentioned sinister. Just wasn’t there for me, I love nic cage, and the first time he appeared in the opening it got me. He was very unsettling, but gotta be honest, on multiple occasions I was full on having a laughing fit at his performance and the fear completely fizzled . 6/10 for me.

Why can’t KZread reviewers realise that in real life with serial killers that we know nothing about them except through the results of their killings. Then the investigations and chase takes place and it’s only if and when their captured that all the information is found out(“exposition dump”) and it’s only then that the story is realised and if they don’t commit suicide the truth of why comes to light ! Remind you of anything ? It’s only in contrived movies is everything shown in a tidy complete package but real life hardly ever does that ! Awesome film and so much more realistic than most serial killer movies and with the whole thing today of people promoted to call themselves what they wish and dress and look how they wish, I see on a daily basis people like Nic Cages character walking the streets !

Almost all serial killer movies are based on real life serial killers - some of them are terrifying - I’ve not seen it yet but have been on the birthday murders website where there’s a ton of content that accompanies the movie- the fact that he physically doesn’t commit the crimes or get his hands dirty gives me Charles Manson vibes- also with the occult aspect. Re Longlegs aesthetic have a look at photos of the UK band T Rex who’s song is in this movie & the lyrics are “you’ve got the teeth of the hydra upon you, you’re dirty sweet & your my girl” he was a glam rocker with curly hair so I think Longlegs is an aspect of that & Oz Perkins & Nic Cage both discussed their mothers issues with mental health & some of their mannerisms! I love that this is a demonic occult movie without being like The Conjuring (which also uses magic, occultism & psychic intuition) but this does it to much greater effect in my opinion- I’d say sev7n meets Sinister is pretty accurate👌🏼 and even though Sinister isn’t terrifying as a horror nerd who lives alone- watching the 35mm murder videos with soundscape still chills me to the point of anxiety- that’s what great cinematography does- can’t wait to see this (I’ve been following the viral marketing for the birthday murders & its creepy AF but brilliantly done by NEON always love Nic Cage & I really liked Mandy (which is like watching a crazy acid trip & I’ve never taken hallucinogens LOL but I LOVE that movie for its unique “out there” concept & Cage is phenomenal in his role as Red so I know I’m gonna love this!! 🖤🫶🏼

As a Christian, i felt the ending is very rattling and unsettling. The devil is very real and he will take hold of you if you let him just maybe not in the way depicted in the movie. I had a nightmare with the mom in it. I was in the passenger seat of a car. It was overcast and about to be dark and it seemed like it was out in the sticks. The car pulled to the left and pulled over. I looked at the driver and it was the mom in the nun outfit. She looked at me and just smiled. I’ve noticed younger movie goers are not going to get this type of movie compared to older audiences that may be seasoned to this type of story….this is getting mainstream attention and if you think about what’s been released in the past ten years or even longer there’s nothing like it…movie events in the last 15 years have been marvel movies. And I’m not saying these types of stories haven’t been made they just haven’t been mainstream… Now think about the 90’s seven silence of the lambs natural born killers like big movie events about serial killers and investigating and disturbing subject matter… Movie goers now are dulled by family themed movies for too long… hopefully Longlegs will bring us back to bigger darker quality filmmaking…

I saw this and I would not say scariest of all time but, I will say it is very very very disturbing, uncomfortable, dread attack on senses, I feel it was a fresh breath and acting was amazing, I grew up with the Exorcist so I love slow burn movies and this is really a slow burn, there are many things that will slip by if you blink the whole time I was watching this movie I felt like I was next victim in a way some scary parts yes, but most of all disturbing very disturbing possibly the most disturbing I have ever seen. I have seen them all. In my personal opinion yes go in and cleanse all reviews and stuff you read or hear, don't expect anything just go to experience it. I am still a bit uneasy from the constant slow assault on senses visual and audio. I loved the ending and it totally worked mostly because it brought a sense of its not over even after it is over because ................EVIL! I have to go 5/5 on this movie across the board.

Maika Monroe as a gifted FBI agent sounds like an amalgamation of the brilliant profiler in _Red Dragon_ and FBI trainee Clarice Starling in _Silence of the Lambs_ which is unfortunate as this just feels a lot like a Thomas Harris copycat thriller but with a touch more pretentiousness thrown into the mix.
