We need to talk about Heeramandi 😩 ... | Analyzing Ep. 1 of Bhansali’s Heeramandi on Netflix

Фильм және анимация

Hi Guys! I am still mulling over Bhansali’s Heeramandi!
The series dropped in May 2024, on Netflix and it was HIGHLY anticipated. There is so much to unpack and discuss - so I decided to do a full recap and analysis of every episode. This is my recap and analysis of episode 1: Mallika Jaan, The Queen of Heermandi.
In this analysis, I discuss various books and articles that I have read concerning Tawaif history and where I think the first episode fell flat. I also include an in-depth analysis of Bibbojaan’s viral walk and what Aditi Rao Hydari has shared regarding creating the scene. Also, if you enjoyed this video, you may also enjoy these videos related to this topic:
• Pakeezah: The Most Mis...
• The History Of Heerama...
I also refer to this KZread interview by the Quint with Kathak dancer and the founder of “The Courtesan Project” Manjari Chaturvedi - watch it here:
• 'Wrong Portrayal of Ta...
I find Tawaifs such a fascinating - yet forgotten - part of South Asian history and I hope to unpack more on these interesting women as we go along in my recap and analysis of every episode. Let me know what you thought of Heermandi as a series, and your thoughts on episode 1 - hope you enjoy the video!

In my opinion, watching Fareedan forgive/ feel bad for Malikajaan was really infuriating. The fact that Malikajaan sold her and we know in series that she was married to a grown man at ten years old (and also know she sold Saima out of jealousy, and we saw the aftermath of her assault!) all for her to be forgiven because she was assaulted was honestly… really weak. If a man did any of these things, he would not have been forgiven by the audience nor in the story. To see this ‘girls have to stick together no matter what they do to each other’ message was really infuriating. It’s not something I agree with and not something I liked seeing represented I think a better ending to the series would be Malikajaan’s death by Fareedan. The two should’ve had a good discussion where Fareedan understood Malikajaan’s struggles and suffering and was empathetic to it, but not forgiving. It would also be a great parallel to Bibbo’s death. Mother and daughter dying due to their values, one’s death representing the beginning of the end of a long, deep rooted suffering and cycle of cruelty of the Indian British Raj. Meanwhile, one’s death represents the never ending fight and suffering for freedom

I kind of interpreted it like Malikajaan and Fareedan were both ruthless, and Malikajaan comes to realize Fareedan is exactly the person she needs. They both are willing to do just about anything to ensure their goals are met. Malikajaan talks about how her actual daughters do not have the ruthlessness in them to replace her, but Fareedan does. I think it's more a matter of survival and realizing it was pointless to expend so much energy trying to stop Fareedan when she is actually the perfect successor.

Oh hell yes!! I’ve been eagerly awaiting your review of this- you’re one of the few ppl I trust to criticize this project from a place of good faith. I srsly respect your perspective on SLB based on other videos you’ve made abt his work, and I rly appreciated all the historical context you provided in this video essay. The information about the nath ritual was especially interesting. Hard agree on your objections to SLB failing to portray the tawaifs practicing and training and honing their craft, btw- I felt it was a big hole in the worldbuilding, and I kept finding myself wishing less time was spent on Alamzeb-centric scenes and more was devoted to that aspect of the lives of the more mature tawaifs. Rly enjoyed this analysis and looking forward to the next video in this series! (also! unrelated but I love this outfit- that embroidery looks so lovely on you ❤️)

Alamzeb was the least interesting to me, even though she was sort of depicted as if she was the female lead. It felt like a distraction, because Bibbojaan slipped in and stole the show! Alam's expressions felt so oddly flat or inappropriate to the scene that it was very difficult for me to connect with her, and her pinning to be a poet felt childish in the grand scheme of things happening in the household. Maybe that was the point, I don't know. I found myself wanting to watch the other women's stories far more.

You can tell that SLB really likes women by the way he depicts them on screen, from how they were dressed and the jewelry they adorn. I loved this series and I want to re-watch it. Another great, well researched video, well done Tas looking forward to the next episode breakdown ❤

I love your recap and analysis yet I still wished you had included more important things, like for example the song sakal ban being a poem by Amir Khosro and therefore the deeper meaning of the whole scene etc. I appreciate and love your work girl I am so excited for the following videos🫶🏻✨

Oh to be taught to love your body. What a lovely story from Aditi - the virality was such a reclamation of the female form, by the female gaze.

Hey there! I just wanted to say that I really dig your videos about Bollywood movies and also Hindi history. I've always been into Indian culture and cinematography, but there aren't many KZreadrs talking about it or articles online, so I hope you will continue to make more videos. I am looking forward to it!

I thought the show was really good until about halfway through then it just felt overdramatic and the characters fell flat.

i discovered this channel quite recently and although the topic of the channel might seem niche for some people ( 50's Bollywood, modern Bollywood e.t.c), i highly appreciate all the effort you put in your videos 🙏 i became a fan of Hindi cinema a few years ago, and, unfortunately, i DON'T KNOW HINDI 😭 so i can't indulge myself in the Hindi-speaking content surrounding my favourite films (including Mughal-E-Azaam and other beautiful old films as well) thanks to you, now i can look at this movies from a new angle, with a newly found understanding of the context this movies were made in, see a new meaning behind the familiar scenes! (i hope my English didn't sound gabberish😅)
