I have a copper placer mine. Quite rare to find copper in a placer.

@@ChrisRalph yes. Mine is on copper gulch in Jefferson County MT. An iron oxide dike forms a dam of sorts creating a sump behind it. There are copper coated twigs and other organic matter. Also copper/sand chunks that are easily metal detected. We hit one area that goes 5% copper or 105 lbs per yard. Don't quote me, it's been awhile. There is another place in MT called fish creek near Yellowstone.

Hey Chris big fan here! You inspire me with your passion for the earth's marvels we call geology! Pretty cool that you love metal detecting on top of all your wealth of knowledge! Quick question! I live in an area where a ton of old mining companies have claims and bought a lot of mineral rights but they ceased exploration because at that time they didn't have the tech to reach the gold ( they said the gold was too deep) but tons of it Within the past 2 years massive influx of companies have now been coming out and drilling and using high pressure water to blast the gold up from depth. In an area like this is there any chance of finding gold nuggets in old Riverbeds and downhill or in the desert spots below the mtns? I have a gpz 6000 17" and am just getting started but have doubts. If the alluvial gold was too deep for normal drilling with explosives and picks is there any way the gold could've shed upwards and for me to find it 1-2ft below the surface

With the very limited info you gave me, there is no way for me to know. Some of this I think you may be uncertain about yourself, so there is just no way for me to guess. Take some time and give it a try for yourself. Then you will know.

Hi. Chris, I live in Reno and bought property next to Rye Patch reservoir, I'm wondering about river dredging in Nevada, since it's legal and the permit is $15. I have a 6" dredge

Bedrock out in the Humboldt river near Rye Patch is 50 to 100 feet or even deeper. Plus the overburden stuff is all silt and clay - you'd need a 200 foot diameter hole to go down deep. Just not practical. In other places there is just not much water in Nevada and in most places where there is water, the bedrock is super deep. There are only a very few places in Nevada where dredging makes sense.

You must get a chemical analysis of the sample. That will tell you the percentage of copper in the sample.
