We Moved, It's Humid, and a Game Changer for Rust Prevention?!

The move from Denver to Missouri happened, but not the way I had planned. Thankfully Mom was there to back me up and everything eventually made it to our new home in Missouri. My tools are stuffed in a detached garage and the commercial shop space is still in process. I'll keep you posted as that situation develops.
Since I'm moving from one of the driest cities in the country to one of the more humid cities, I needed to finally take rust prevention seriously. I came across a cool product called Carbon Method and I'm hoping this will be a game-changer for rust prevention. It works by coating the surface with a single layer of graphite, providing a slick surface that's protected from rush for months at a time. Does it work as well as they say? Let's find out together! Check them out at CarbonMethod.com. carbonmethod.com/
To reiterate what I said in the video, I purchased this product with my own money. After talking with the owner, we decided to run an ad together with the caveat being I'd report back in a few months after my tools were exposed to high humidity.

I do not comment a lot, but you are THE guy that teached me woodworking. A little bit over 5 years ago, as a foreigner living in China and missing deeply my sweet homecountry of France, I had to do something other than working and sleeping (and boozing on week-ends...) to keep my sanity. Your videos from your early days gave me the courage to start playing around with wood. Starting with hand tools in one of the room of my 15th floor flat, then eventually one band-saw, then a Sawstop. All this drove me to move to a ground floor flat, where I totally illegaly build a small shed, and continued to expand my tool collection and did a whole lot of furniture for this flat. 3 kids later, I am still in China in my first detached home with a nice garage. And in 2 years max, because raising kids in China is simply not something you should be doing, I will be moving back to France, and hopefully get my Homestead with woodland and my final workshop. All the while thinking of you and Nicole for your great gift you gave me with sharing your knowledge. You really saved me from insanity in China. Big kisses to you 4. Love you guys!

Cordialement.

Good call on being ready early. I moved from Long Island NY to Phoenix a year or so back, and managed to be severely unprepared. Severe angst, sleep deprivation, and unforecast expenses ensued, but eventually the family, the house, and the shop survived. Of course, all that made the 4 day drive, complete with an 85 pound shepherd, all that more unpleasant. Congrats and best of luck in MO.

I know it's a hassle to go through a move, especially a move that includes a fully equipped wood shop in addition to household items. But in 6 months, it'll be behind you and you will have recovered from the aggravation and stress. Knowing you, you will have posted a ton of new content by then, and a lot of us will continue wishing we could build the stuff you do. Hang in there. We love your work!

I'm a woodworker in Missouri and had lots of trouble with moisture problems and rust. I recently built a dedicated shop in a new 30x30 detached garage. I installed a 2 ton minisplit and have a dehumidifier set to auto at 35%. I finally have no issues with rust. The problem I've found is how quickly the humidity here swings along with the temps. Good luck in Missouri good hvac is your best bet.

I insulated my small garage woodshop in Grand Forks ND, and got a forced-air kerosene heater which brought the temp from -20 to 70 in about twenty minutes. Cast-iron tools do NOT warm up that quickly, and when the AF finally moved me to arid Utah, I spent a lot of time with an orbit sander, cleaning up the rust on my tablesaw. Hopefully I'll never have to move again; my back aches just watching this video! Anxious to see the new shop.

Best of luck on the move. Did the same thing in reverse a while back. Moved from the humid midwest to the not humid (except monsoon season) southwest. Quite a job. Sold our house the first day it was posted and purchased our new (to us ) house the first week of looking. Moved ourselves in two trips with a tailgate truck over a month. Never an easy task what you are doing. Hope the new product works out. Always looking how to combat rust. Even in our dry heat environment metal left unprotected will and does rust, as I learned the hard way. It could be a good answer to the rust problem. Will continue following your adventure with our best wishes for your success.

Welcome to Missouri, YES it is humid and HOT. But it is a place of joy for raising a family. Thanks for all of your shop ideas over the years. My wife and I moved in 2020 from St. Louis across the Missouri River to St. Charles so I could convert my small woodworking shop into a three car garage wood shop to keep me happy and busy in retirement. Many of your ideas from over the years on how to set up a small/mid size shop are being incorporated into my new shop. If I could only finish the projects my wife and daughter have for me, I could get back to creating my shop. Oh well, life and family go hand in hand and I'll get there sooner or later. Updates so far have included T1-11 paneling, vertical lumber storage with iron pipe separators and today we got the Mini-Split installed and working, so much for the heat and humidity :)

I'll trade your our FL humidity for the MO one! Good to know about the new rust stuff. My wife is Air Force and we'll actually be moving in a little less than a year so I'm going to be needing something for my stuff during that time. Glad you got moved without much issue!

Marc. i have a 40 x 64 insulated pole barn in northern Indiana. I use a Pelonis dehumidifier, the humidity inside stays at 35 to 40 %. I have had no rust problems and the work area is more comfortable.

I have a friend who is a professional auto detailer and he uses a product similar to Carbon Method but he applies it with a buffer. The heat from the buffer causes a reaction with the product and the surface to form a molecular bond. He did my SawStop 3 years ago and I haven't had one incident of rust. I hope Carbon Method works because it is much easier to apply and it is much less expensive than the auto detailer stuff. Congrats on the move! Glad to see your tools made it safely, unlike the grinding your saw took last time!

Hello, I'm in the UK, very humid, as long as anything that can rust is waxed you'll be fine. If you can afford to run a dehumidifier, that will help. I also regulate the temperature to avoid sudden drops.

I'm looking at moving my shop in a few months and I am only going 10 miles away, It's been 23 years in the same place, I can't imagine having to move it again, Then again my machines are a lot bigger, but its an emotional journey for sure

I have had shops in Indiana and East Texas. Both areas are very humid. I found one of the best solutions is to clean the cast iron tops, then place a rust preventative cover on the machine. The covers keep rust away a long time. I usually just clean and wax the tops about once a month. Before I found the covers, it was a constant battle. Good luck.

On the lift gate, make sure it operates smooth and level. My edge sander went for a slide while loading up because the lift connected with the floor at a slight angle. Hope that helps someone

Welcome to the South Mark! We're excited to have you and your family as our neighbors. Down here, rust prevention is a constant battle. For many years, have used frequent coatings of Johnson's paste wax (Usually after a full day of woodworking, or every couple of weeks, if I haven't been able to get to the tools), and then covered all the large tools with a moving blanket to prevent air and moisture getting at the surface. Has worked well over the years, but would be nice to have something to supplement the paste wax as an "underlayer" for extra insurance, so very interested to see your results with the Carbon Method. Again, welcome, and let us know if there's anything we can do to make you feel more at home.

I moved to NW AR last year. Please run a dehumidifier in the garage with your tools. I didnt when I moved in and while I didnt have major issues with rust I did have mold issues where things were close to walls.

@@woodwhisperer I’m hijacking this for visibility- if you haven’t, please look into PODs storage… if you are not familiar, it’s basically a shipping container that they move for you… they can either store it for you, or you can store it on your property… I have a slightly similar move, and that my tools had to be in limbo for a while.. I found it very convenient to have them in the driveway just in case I needed something crazy, but I didn’t have to unpack and repack them two more times, they just moved it to the new location when it was time

Welcome to Missouri. Fighting humidity and rust has always been fun here. It seems like nothing lasts as long as they claim. But I'll be looking forward to seeing the report on carbonmethod. Rust happens even in the winter when the air is dryer because of the constant changes in temperature.

This past spring, we had a couple cool weeks where the temp in the shop was in the mid 50's. Then summer hit with a day in the upper 80's and high humidity. I opened the garage door, the hot, humid air swept in and instantly condensed on every piece of cool metal. I literally watched areas of my table saw bloom with rust as I frantically grabbed some rags and tried to keep the condensation wiped off any cast iron.

If you're going to open up your shop on a humid day again and you plan ahead, like having to move equipment in and out, what I do is take some of your sawdust from your shopvac or extractor and sprinkle a good inch thick layer on every raw steal surface, I know it's messy, but vacuuming that up is far better than spending a copious amount time getting those surfaces back to usable condition, the moisture will settle on the wood and not your steel, think of it like a vapor barrier. Just an FYI.
