We Might Never See a More Dominant Rookie Season ....
Спорт
The landscape of hockey underwent a seismic shift in 1988. The highly anticipated draft of that year introduced a handful of future stars and hall of famers, including Mike Modano, Trevor Linden, Jeremy Roenick, Rod Brind'Amour, Tony Amonte, mark rechi and i could keep going. Amidst this talent pool, there was one player who stood out, a 10th overall selection by the Winnipeg Jets. Little did anyone anticipate that this newcomer would soon threaten Bossy's rookie goal record and Stastny's rookie point record.
Today boys we turn our focus to the greatest rookie in NHL history and were talking about the Finnish flash, Teemu Selanne! #teemuselanne #winnipegjets #nhl #hockey #anahiemducks #connorbedard

LMK Boys, do we need a deep dive into Selanne's career!? I love Teemu & would love to do it! Also boys I made a royal fuck up when writing this videos script when talking at 1:30 I Meant to write Luc Robitaille not Marcel Dionne & Blair Macdonald Technically didn’t qualify as a rookie in 1980, it was just his first season in the NHL so please ignore that 🙏 I’ll definitely do a better job proof reading in the future 💯 thank you guys so much for watching!

I was at the game in December 1992 when Teemu scored his second career hat trick (it happened close to Christmas, so some were calling it his Christmas gift to Winnipeg). The man was unreal. He had an incredible wrist shot, was blazing fast on his skates, and he had sublime instincts (what we today call hockey IQ). The puck followed him around like he had a magnet in his stick. As a 11 year-old kid, I had no real understanding of the rarity of what I was seeing every time I saw him play in the old Winnipeg Arena, how special it really was. But in hindsight, I feel privileged to have watched the beginning of one of the NHL's greatest careers. Indeed, I was fortunate to see a lot of the greats play, before the Jets left for Arizona - Gretzky, Jagr, Lemieux, Bure, and many other legends took the ice vs. the Jets many times. But Teemu was ours, our very own generational player, back when that word meant something. And there is no doubt in my mind that nobody will ever touch his rookie records...hell, nobody has yet scored even 70 goals in a season since Selänne (and Mogilny) did it in 1992-93 (Lemieux came closest, with 69, then Ovechkin at 65, and McDavid with 64). Heck, only 3 players have scored more goals in a season *over the entire history of the NHL* - Gretzky, obviously (he did it twice), Super Mario and Brett Hull. That's it. Selänne is in some pretty good company there, I think.
"The Finnish Flash" Teemu Selanne was indeed outstanding in his record rookie season. But credits must also be given to that a reason he could make so many goals was that he found great chemistry with defensman Phil Housley who could find Selanne with passes at almost near will to score at there opponents. Just to bad that it was not enough for the Winnipeg Jets to become a serious contender as they got eliminated in 6 games in 1st round by the Canucks and 1994 & 1995 the Jets missed the play-offs :-/. In 1996 Selanne became a Mighty Duck and would with Paul Kariya become one of the very best dues ever seen!
He was beloved in Winnipeg because of his character

Unbelievable player. My sister’s classmate in school in Espoo. In the national team too when Finland played tough games, you could count Selanne to make the difference, and he usually did. Cant remember how many times his knee was operated and you might have thought the career is over (even the surgeon thought it was over at one point) but he was so determined to come back, and he came back. Good role model. When life hits you hard, don’t give up.
And now he is a host on the Finnish Top Gear

One can only wonder if it would have been 850 goal career if he entered right away, but that rookie season would not have happened. He was ready and in his prime entering. Would do good for many players to do the same. I think another Jets pick Laine would have benefitted a lot from growing in and dominating Finnish league.

As a young kid growing up in Ontario, Teemu was always my favourite. That rookie season is unlike anything I've seen. I remember even writing him a note and sending him a card and he signed it with a black ball point pen and sent a note back. You better believe I was pumped. Sold my card collection long ago but I'd never get rid of that.
My dad took me to the game when he broke Bossys record. Ill never forget it!

Gretzky and Kurri with the Kings in the 90s was great, too bad they didn’t quite have the team to win the highest prizes.
We had Jets season tickets in 1992-93. Ahhh memories. I’ll will also mention that game that he broke the record in was only shown on TV in Quebec. The voice you heard was the radio broadcast and French Tv feed. No local tv feed. No national tv feed on cbc or TSN or anything, no effort was made to show this game to anyone.

I'm a Finn, was 10 years old at this point. His Finnish national team Jokerit at the time was also on a tear winning multiple Finnish championships. Cant remember much, other than both were great. :) Teemu was also heavily involved in Finnish hockey team and other players followed him every chance they got. For example in olympics.

watching him play with Paul Kariya was something extraordinary, for me there never was a better pairing of hockey players. Shame Kariya got wrecked by Stevens as his career would have been also stellar
Dude yiur contentnis unbelievably good! Keep it up! Seriously with all the amazing Hockey channels there are right now, its never been better to be an NHL fan! Great work
This was fun to watch. I was at most of those games as a kid and can't express to people how awesome it was to watch him.
I live in Winnipeg watched a couple of games that year at the arena what a season
great video my man. finnish flash was a beast!!!
Outstanding job. Your passion for hockey is there every millisecond of your video. Very cool.
Bossy is great, Montreal kid too. Bossy, Gretz, Mario, and Moose are great, but still living 30 feet from the ODR of Messier and Iginla I still skate on, nobody will ever match Selanne. Great videos, btw. keep it up, bud
I know this is a euro comment, but Teemu was the Jari Litmanen of ice hockey! At least to us Finns. Two golden players of the same age (check out what Jari did the around the same time). I still somehow find it hard to believe Teemu only got into the NHL in 93 but I’ve got to believe it, I thought he was there already in 91! I can definitely attest to Teemu claiming an absolute legend status in Finland winning the domestic league just before moving out to North America and he has always retained that all these years later! Kiitos muistoista Teemu!
great vidoe this made me as a kid again staying up late watching his games

Classy humility! Interesting as you probably wouldn't ever hear any Finn describing him that way.

Great video - stunning actually. Greetings from Finland. #8
As a Finn, I was a huge Selänne and team Jokerit fan in the 90s. He was a part of one the most dominant lineups in the Finnish hockey league history in Jokerit, before going to the NHL. I also started supporting the Jets because of Selänne.
he scored 34 goals in the last 29 games of the rookie season to match Mogilny in goals 👀
If only he didn't get his Achilles sliced next season. We'll never know how good he truly could've been.
Awesome. I remember it well. To be in Winnipeg during that year
13:10 Iconic

Really good video. Well made.

One of the most famous buckets in nhl history
We also won't see the 84 game regular season anymore.
Yes yes the times are different but still... Scoring 132 points and 76 goals in a season! Those stats are ridiculous and to think he did this in his rookie season. One of the best seasons ever by an NHL player and he did this as a goddamn rookie. Not just rookies, it would be incredible if anyone in the current era would be able to get such stats in a season. It's such a shame his injuries ruined him somewhat but at least he got to win the Stanley Cup once with the Ducks and had a very long career
Gretzky was screwed out of ROTY Honours by none other then Harold Ballard. Ballard hated the WHA & did everything to deny Gretzky the honor. He said if Gretzky is named Rookie of the Year, Toronto will not be playing next year. The NHL bowed down to Ballard & gave into him. Gretzky was denied.

We haven't seen a season like that from anyone since then. Also tells a lot about how much the game has changed.

Selänne made number 13 feel lucky
Still a national hero even though he hasn't played in a long time. 🤘🏼🤘🏼 So sad he never got that Olympic Gold.
i’m confused why Wayne was ineligible for the Calder due to competing in the NHL, but Teemu was eligible even though he played professionally in Finland.
@bambae7669
2 ай бұрын
the NHL specifically changed the rules the year Gretzky joined, to block the calder eligibility of him and other WHA players. As to why exactly, only they know, but it was probably cause NHL had an age restriction of 20 and they changed that rule to allow players under 20, if they had played a season in WHA. So in order for Wayne to be allowed to play in the NHL, he couldn't be considered a rookie.
I always wonder when some people say that Teemu had the best possible team mates to back him up, but did he really? Only one who was even close to 100pts was Phil Housley. Ok, maybe Teemu got more time on ice and guys were passing him a lot, but I think he might have been even more dominant with someone else (like Fedorov, Sundin, or of course Gretzky or Lemieux). How do you see it?
*will never see a more dominant rookie season
"Might" is an odd way to spell "Won't"
For those who don't know, the "ä" in Selänne is pronounced with an "ä" like the first sound in "action" or "animal". So it's SelÄnne.

I will argue that as impressive as these older records are, they would NOT be that dominant today. The goalies simply are too good now. And that goes for Wayne Gretzky and Super Mario as well. They would score perhaps only 1/3 of their tally today. Change my mind.

To be fair he was 22 years old when he was "rookie". That kind of talent today would not suspend the rookie season in NHL such way. But propable one of the hardest records to ever be broken. NHL would need to develop to more scoring league (like NBA) for that to happen.

In total for every rookie?😊
We Will* Never See A.... fixed for ya. If Connor McDavid can't put up Gretzky numbers, nobody ever will. McDavid is on another level, imo he's the most skilled player to ever play the game, and he's not even close to Gretzky's stats. The game has just become too stacked with talent and become too even of a playing field than when Gretzky and Selanne played, their records will never be touched, not even close to touched.
You should subscribe he put a lot of work into it
Teemu had 2,5 season in finish elite division before jumping to NHL, his stats were so high and his style was better suited to NHL. We will never see similar talent having time to hone their skills for so long outside of NHL. He wasn't rookie in that sense of the word
calling selanne a rookie is kind of not fair. he was 23. gretzky at 23 had.... 87. wounder what selanne would have had at a normal rookie age in his teens. probly not 50.
