It makes sense that the dirt would have to be edible when they “bury someone alive,” but I wouldn't have thought of that on my own. Its neat to find out what goes into doing scenes like that.

In culinary school as a big project I made radishes in "edible dirt" that was made from a mixture of roasted barley, malt flour and melted butter. It was a decade ago though so I don't remember the exact recipe. Took inspiration from a recipe found in the NOMA book. It was really tasty

One of my informal hobbies is using one type of food to mock up a different kind of food. Think, rice crispy squares meets roast turkey (I'm now required to bring this to the Thanksgiving family get togethers). From here it"s a short walk to creating edible mock-inedibles.

I remember that for the short horror movie we did for uni I spent days searching recepies and getting elements for fake meat for a raw meat eating sceane and somebody just bought some tofu and added edible red food dye. I felt floored

That was absoilutely fascinating! You mentioned that the actor didn't have a problem with eating beef, allowing for the mulchy texture to be made of jerky; it got me thinking. I've got this disease called celiac, where I absolutely can not have gluten (which is in all those cookies). What would happen if an actor who needed to eat dirt had celiac or a gluten allergy? Would the dirt be made of gluten free versions of everything, or an entirely different dirt recipe made, or a stunt double used? I'd love to know. Thanks for making these videos, Scott!

Mark here: We have an actress on our show who is allergic to pork. And they eat bacon in every breakfast scene which seems to happen every episode. Lots of turkey bacon to the rescue!

Mark here: The amount of work you get depends on where you are based. If you live in an area with a lot of production, your chances to work more consistently are greater. Atlanta, New Mexico, L.A., New York. We are based in Austin TX and there is rarely more than two productions happening at the same time. We are kind of a big fish in small pond. Hope this helps. FYI-Oklahoma is currently experiencing a surge in productions. Could be a great market to get a foot-hold.

Atlanta, New Mexico, L.A., New York. We are based in Austin TX and there is rarely more than two productions happening at the same time. We are kind of a big fish in small pond. Hope this helps. FYI-Oklahoma is currently experiencing a surge in productions. Could be a great market to get a foot-hold.

The real challenge, accomplishing this same task for a gluten-free vegan diabetic actor. Hmm, there is, evidently, an H-E-B nearby, so this is clearly Texas, not LA.

Got a question about Silicone and clear polyurethane resin. Does the complexity of the mould limit the amount of pulls you get from it before the surface goes matt/ frosty?
