We Made an OFFER on a SAILBOAT: Boat Tour & Seeing the Boat for the First Time Ep. 72

We have spent the last year and a half working on restoring our 1977 38' sailboat. After learning the lifestyle and leaning into everything the cruising life had to offer, we decided to buy a new sailboat that we can grow into as we cruise over the next 7-10 years. We officially put an offer on a 1993 42' Catalina named "Post Time" located in San Franciso. (I don't mention it in the video, but the agreed upon offer was $104,500.) We take you along the first official sailboat tour of this stunning Catalina, as we envision if this sailboat will fit our future dreams and if we will move into the next phase of a survey and sea trial off the coast of sunny California.

Really nice boat. Looks like the previous owner took really good care of it. Motor looks clean. Doesn't look like it was used much, might need some lube to get things moving again. Excellent charter boat. Hope the survey went well. Must of, you made an offer. Reasonable price if accepted. Look forward to watching many more adventures on this beauty. Thanks for the vids.

The grate as you come in is also used to sweep your dirt into for easy cleanup. And the More hatches and portlights the more Possible Leaks. The things I can see you need is a solid Dodger and more Solar Space. You may want to look at what the s.v. Channel Spirit Animal did for there Dodger and solar set up. It is Is quite impressive. And looks fantastic. They have set it up for around the world Cruising. You do find Catalina's all over the world. I believe they can do it. But I remember back in the 90ds that they just didn't look ready for a blue water trip. They would Commission the New Canalina boats right next to my boat. They looked fantastic but I didn't think they was ready for blue water passes. Ok Thank you for taking us along and Congratulations on your new boat. Until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Where the volcano is still alive.

That's a really interesting layout, and I like almost everything about it! If it were me, I might convert one of the aft berths to a workshop/office if you are planning to live aboard. That also might give you an opportunity to increase the size of the midship head. I just found your channel, so I don't know what your plans are yet, but I will soon as I check out your videos ;) As for the bathroom forward, I think you could enclose that shower without too much trouble. Sure it's a project, but it wouldn't be a substantial change to the layout of that very nice, large head. Maybe do two curved shower doors which slide into pockets on each side. I'd need to draw a picture to explain it better, but it could be a really fun project.

..... exciting checking out different boats ..... advantage of this kitchen is that counter space is not lost in the corners, good having that bench seat to lean against .... never been one for V-berths. If not center cockpit and aft cabin, then would have to have forward Pullman berth .... very bright and would also give good ventilation .... maybe Seth could make some barn doors for the companionway, even if it was secondary, inside the slide-ins for easier access while on board. Have seen where a one piece slide-in is used for ease and quick open and close, sometimes plexi to allow light ..... always wonder on the production vs so called blue water discussion. Delos ran into a family of 6 or 7 circumnavigating in South Africa and if I remember correctly, they were on a 26 or 28 foot boat. Personally would not be doing it on a boat that small and crowded. .. The thing that gets me wondering is the electronics available today and daily weather to be able to avoid major weather as opposed to yester years when all was done with sextant and charts and an eye on the horizon for weather. Would say that Bluewater was more a thing ... Take heed have not been on the ocean since my parents had a boat so am not talking from experience, just my view. .... Story time... Mum was from Scotland and one time when we were over there in the late sixties there was a friend of the families son having a boat launch/splash, a 10 meter if I remember correctly. He was all set and had to provision and first he was headed for the Med and then on from there and he showed me, 10 - 12 at the time, all his charts and sextant and explained that with these and his compass would get him to where he wanted to go. Having grown up to that stage on the BC coast where you looked out over the Pacific and the next landfall was said to be Japan. Anyhow I thought he was nuts. His father a retired British Navy Captain and then at that time a ships captain in the merchant marine, was as proud as punch of his sons passion and goals. .... Because of what I knew then, there was no way I would embark on such a feat. Today with all the electronics, I am going to circumnavigate. I will also have a working knowledge of sextant and charts in case there is a solar flare or lightening strike that takes out all electronics. just like there will be a wind vane auto piolet as well. Should be able to get pretty proficient at using a sextant on passage if one does it every day and has the electronics to cross check ones accuracy .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

That’s awesome! And I agree, no counter space lost in the kitchen! Seth recently did a work presentation and decided to do it on the sextant! Everyone should know how to use it!

@@sailingposttime ... I totally agree, but most do not even have one .... doing a presentation on sextant use would definitely require having a working knowledge. There is an old saying, I'm going to paraphrase cause I cannot recall it precisely, .. if you really want to learn something thoroughly, teach it to others ... also of course .. repetition is the mother of science ..... thx for the reply .. make it a week of appreciation ......

My problem is that you only skimmed over the critical details of the ship. (Anchors, sails, winches, standing and running rigging, condition of navigation equipment, etc.) In addition, it can be seen that the previous owner spared and cared for this sailboat. It is rare to find a boat in such good condition. Based on what you have shown, it is in top condition. I see you like it. The only question is the price.

Look at Sailboatdata, and find the comfort rating, your poor choice has a comfort rating of 25.38, while my much smaller Bristol Channel Cutter has a comfort rating of 37.20, that is comfort at sea, the Catalina might be more comfortable at anchor, but comfort at sea is what really counts, unless you want to stay at anchor in a harbor

SO THESE ARE MY QUESTIONS. 1. HOW IS THIS TYPE OF BOAT/SAILBOAT REGISTERED? 2. WHAT COMPANY HANDLES INSURANCE AND WHAT EXACTLY IS INSURANCE? 3. HOW DO YOU CALULATE MARINA DOCKING FEES? Great questions! Thank you for being here! 1. The boat is registered with the USCG. 2. We did find a good cruisers insurance from a recommendation from a friend 3. Docking fees vary by location so it really depends on a lot of factors, but slip size is determined by boat length size and location. 4. Storage is tight, but do-able with being minimalistic. It's more about what you don't need than what you have! 5. We did have the boat hauled out in CA for bottom work and paint! 6. We both work our butts off and do have jobs! No lottery won, just hard work towards our dream!
