    @@toriboy25 hah, she should love the Numenoreans at their worst then, I mean the lore because the show is not there yet, all the best stuff enslavement, genocide, military conquest ;), economic exploitation, oppression: Tar-Ciryatan ... was a mighty King, but greedy of wealth; he built a great fleet of royal ships, and his servants brought back great store of metals and gems, and oppressed the men of Middle-earth. ... Tar-Atanamir the Great ... was like his father proud and greedy of wealth, and the Númenóreans in his service exacted heavy tribute from the men of the coasts of Middle-earth. In his time the Shadow fell upon Númenor.... Unfinished Tales, Part 2, Ch 3, The Line of Elros, Kings of Númenor ... "Thus it came to pass in that time that the Númenóreans first made great settlements upon the west shores of the ancient lands; for their own land seemed to them shrunken, and they had no rest or content therein, and they desired now wealth and dominion in Middle-earth, since the West was denied. Great harbours and strong towers they made, and there many of them took up their abode; but they appeared now rather as lords and masters and gatherers of tribute than as helpers and teachers. And the great ships of the Númenóreans were borne east on the winds and returned ever laden, and the power and majesty of their kings were increased; and they drank and they feasted and they clad themselves in silver and gold." The Silmarillion, Akallabêth ... "For Pharazôn son of Gimilkhâd had become a man yet more restless and eager for wealth and power than his father. He had fared often abroad, as a leader in the wars that the Númenóreans made then in the coastlands of Middle-earth, seeking to extend their dominion over Men; and thus he had won great renown as a captain both by land and by sea. Therefore when he came back to Númenor, hearing of his father's death, the hearts of the people were turned to him; for he brought with him great wealth, and was for the time free in his giving.'" The Silmarillion, Akallabêth Hehe: "Also it must be said that 'unfriendliness' to the Numenoreans and their allies was not always due to the Shadow, but in later days to the actions of the Numenoreans themselves. Thus many of the forest-dwellers of the shorelands south of the Ered Luin, especially in Minhiriath, were as later historians recognized kin of the Folk of Haleth; but they became bitter enemies of the Numenoreans, because of their ruthless treatment and their devastation of their forests, and this hatred remained unappeased in their descendants, causing them to join with any enemies of Numenor. In the Third Age their survivors were the people known in Rohan as the Dunlendings."

    I saw somewhere a theory that the opening represents the Tolkien creation story, where God and all the angels sing in harmony to create the universe. Then Melkor/Morgoth starts singing his own evil song, causing the first 'discourse.' Visuals are modeled off of that thing that happens when you put sand on a speaker

    Yeah, they're showing a phenomenon called cymatics, where sand on a surface will form various standing wave patterns when vibrated at different audio frequencies, and part of what you see is all practical. There's a video montage of them doing it, it's really cool.

    It also harkens back to Disa's resonant singing to prospect mountains and to lament those buried in rockfalls, and how Elrond observed the dancing sand on rock in an earlier episode while she was singing. Also, at the beginning of the series' main theme opening, you see the sand form the nine Rings of Power for mortal Men.

    In the books and the PJ movies, Orcs aren't allergic to sunlight as they are here. They just don't like it. They were born before the Sun, and the Sun is Sacred Fire.

  • @fantasywind3923

    @fantasywind3923

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, they hate it but can withstand it when necessary (and when trained) and suffer no physical damage to their skin, at best they feel weakened in sunlight...like in this scene in book: "‘Of course they soon came down after him, hooting and hallooing, and hunting among the trees. But they don't like the sun: it makes their legs wobble and their heads giddy. They could not find Bilbo with the ring on, slipping in and out of the shadow of the trees, running quick and quiet, and keeping out of the sun; so soon they went back grumbling and cursing to guard the door. Bilbo had escaped.’" The Hobbit ... "‘Now straight on!’ shouted Uglúk. ‘West and a little north. Follow Lugdush.’ ‘But what are we going to do at sunrise?’ said some of the Northerners. ‘Go on running,’ said Uglúk. ‘What do you think? Sit on the grass and wait for the Whiteskins to join the picnic?’ ‘But we can’t run in the sunlight.’ ‘You’ll run with me behind you,’ said Uglúk. ‘Run! Or you’ll never see your beloved holes again. By the White Hand! What’s the use of sending out mountain-maggots on a trip, only half trained. Run, curse you! Run while night lasts!’ Then the whole company began to run with the long loping strides of Orcs. They kept no order, thrusting, jostling, and cursing; yet their speed was very great. Each hobbit had a guard of three. Pippin was far back in the line. He wondered how long he would be able to go on at this pace: he had had no food since the morning. One of his guards had a whip. But at present the orc-liquor was still hot in him. His wits, too, were wide-awake." Two Towers ... "In the afternoon Uglúk’s troop overtook the Northerners. They were flagging in the rays of the bright sun, winter sun shining in a pale cool sky though it was; their heads were down and their tongues lolling out. ‘Maggots!’ jeered the Isengarders. ‘You’re cooked. The Whiteskins will catch you and eat you. They’re coming!’ A cry from Grishnákh showed that this was not mere jest. Horsemen, riding very swiftly, had indeed been sighted: still far behind but gaining on the Orcs, gaining on them like a tide over the flats on folk straying in a quicksand. The Isengarders began to run with a redoubled pace that astonished Pippin, a terrific spurt it seemed for the end of a race. Then he saw that the sun was sinking, falling behind the Misty Mountains; shadows reached over the land. The soldiers of Mordor lifted their heads and also began to put on speed." So they can operate in sunlight without any burns of their skin or anything like that.

    This version of 'strong female' Galadriel is completely stupid and completely obnoxious and is far removed from the canon character, then the 'forced diversity' is implemented as always faulty, instead of exploring the Haradrim the southern cultures the ACTUAL darkskinned peoples of Middle-earth, they race swap 'white folks' :)...and in general the Mordor 'reveal' is kind of laughable :). Haradrim would have been so cool to explore, the mumakil riders, the horsemen of the deserts, then also one could use the chance of depicting the Numenroean colonialism and oppression, their colonies on the shores of Harad, like Umbar could have been plot important location to see and showing the tensions between the natives and encroaching numenorean colonists :). In general the characters act stupid and the dialogues are atrociously bad and often make no sense and there is no believable, sensible reactions there, situations and plot are incredibly contrived...like the whole convoluted plot with 'activating Mount Doom' haha.

    The parallels you drew with HOTD this episode were innocuous enough that it didn't matter, but for future reference take care not to spoil HOTD in your reactions of other shows - a bunch of us haven't watched it yet, epecially if we've been watching RoP instead and plan to catch up now it's done. As for whether humanising Orcs a bit comes from Tolkien, it's something he struggled with and he talked about in his letters how he couldn't work out how to do it, so it's great that the writers of this show, who ARE deeply versed in Tolkien's writings, incorporated that aspect into the show.

    With all the money poured into this, it's meant to be a spectacle. And I realize there are some glorious backdrops. But what kind of a battle do we get? The _Númenóreans_ (all what. . _.all 30 of them?_ 🙄) finally come all this way to help half the population of a small village. Ultimately, when it comes to battles and scale,¹ have they not seen where the bar has been set by shows like *Game of Thrones* or even *_The Last Kingdom?!_* In terms of production, this was was a CW level engagement. A skirmish, at best.² 🤦🏼‍♂️ Just imagine if a glorious contingent of _Númenóbbleblops_ had saved the day after a great battle, only to have the mountain go poof! *EDIT ┤* Additionally, now a handful of villagers have a king. _Yippie._ 😐 I mean, it seems a bit anti-climactic IMO. *├* While _I_ was quite disappointed, these reactions help make up for it, to be sure! 😄 I've shared this opinion elsewhere and have gotten strangely aggressive push back. The _online disinhibition effect_ aside, I think too often we fans also look at such criticism and internalize it. As though it's directed at, or is saying something about, each of us *_personally._* For example: *What was said* ☞ _"I thought_ [insert title/subject] _was so dumb."_ *And this is what we hear* ☞ _"I think _*_you_*_ are so dumb because you liked_ [insert title/subject]." ♬♪ _I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts, deedle-dee dee.³_ ♪♩♬ ··•●✺●•·· ¹ ─ They basically played up the _Númenóreans_ going to aid the Southlands like _Rohan_ coming to aid _Gondor._ But twas not so. ² ─ Again, much (though, not all) of this opinion is being held up against what has been promised. . .Both in cost and ambition. ³ ─ Sorry. I think I got up too fast. 🥴

    *ADDENDUM:* Someone suggested _"that was the way it was supposed to be,"_ regarding the size of the contingent. Which doesn't really address my concerns. Perhaps it isn't the best example, but I suppose by that logic, George Lucas was right when it came to Greedo shooting first. Any argument to the contrary is instantly shut down, because _"that was the way it was supposed to be"_ I guess. 🙄

    Yeah...hehe the Numenoreans 'army' or 'expeditionary force' was what 300 soldiers (from initial 500)? This amount is barely more than a personal guard of Isildur, during Disaster of Gladden Fields (he took 200 soldiers of his personal guard during journey when not even expecting combat :)). Plus it's kind of weird when they are the horsemen, cavalry, the Numenoreans are THE most powerful infantry, they were known for bearing heavy armor and weapons and marching at great speed due to their peak human/borderline superhuman stamina and endurance. The parallel with the ride of Rohirrim are uncanny indeed, but it makes little sense. Why they were at full speed gallop when they didn't even know there is battle/skirmish happening and how they crossed a vast distance from the sea? One wonders did they sail up river Anduin and landed closer to what later will be Morgul Pass? It's basically cutting out the intermediary travel of the army hehe and disembarking from those ships :). I mean even Ride of Rohirrim to Pelennor Fields had at least a scene of them on the road :). "With Isildur went his three sons, Elendur, Aratan, and Ciryon, 11 and his Guard of two hundred knights and soldiers, stern men of Arnor and war-hardened. Of their journey nothing is told until they had passed over the Dagorlad, and on northward into the wide and empty lands south of Greenwood the Great. " The Unfinished Tales, Disaster of Gladden Fields :) so it's basically the case in the show of having a small unit of guard in comparison, rather than fullblown army hehe. The worldbuilding in the show is....not good...in general these southlands are indeed nothing but few little villages in the middle of nowhere, not even a proper kingdom, no organization, not even numbers, nothing basically I would say those southaldn villages are even smaller than Bree-land hehe, not to mention that the whole thing of those peoples makes no sense.
