tow tow tow we get it. Everybody with a truck tows constantly and 400 miles a day oh wait no the don't. The vast majority of trucks take the kids to school and commute back and forth to work. If you are the guy that tows a lot and far then EV trucks aren't for you and won't be for a long time. These are for short distance fleets and normal commuter truck buyers.

true, but also consider that trucks are also purchased to tow when needed. for example I daily my truck but also have a camper that I tow. since I live in Texas there are stretches of over 100 miles between any decent sized city. it sounds like a nightmare trying to deal with that, and extending my drive time 2x (assuming I have access to fast charging, which is still limited).so even though I don't tow all the time, it's still not practical. unless of course I just had both!

my two ram cummins are hooked to gooseneck trailers most of the time, towing up to 16k usually. sure i wouldnt use an ev pickup for that much towing but most truck owners own an RV trailer and no matter the weight, they are a sail in the wind.

I hate cars. my truck has done nothing more than daily drive to work where charging is free, and haul crap from the home depot and haul a small trailer roughly 10-20 miles max. I would love to replace my 16mpg 2004 f-150 with one of these. My other truck can do the long distance hauling 😉

186 miles with 2” level and tires. Stock range is 230 miles. 20% loss of range.

I live pretty close to T&C Ford. I actually saw this truck the other day. It looks really good in person. I’ve also seen a lot of their other customs on the road. They seemingly do a really good job. Most of them are tasteful without being garish. There’s another custom shop in the area that makes their trucks look like they should be in a Mad Max movie.

This was a GREAT and informative video! Awesome job!

@@philipgrice1026 So ya drop off the kids a school, head to work, drive to steak house for lunch (a growing number of food joints are getting charging stations), drive back to work, 5pm clock out and on the way you pick up some pizza for the fam. Chances are that most people will not even use half the charge. So do you want a cool looking truck or a little Volt? That said, if you like to go on long trips, drag a nice size bass boat, play in the mud, use your truck all day long, etc etc then this is for sure not the truck for you. Buy a Jeep and turn that frown upside down.

Looks great! When I had my f150 leveled and bigger wheels and tires installed I lost about 6-7 mpg. Just a fact of life. I don’t see anything different happening with the lightning. You change the aerodynamics and wheel size, makes perfect sense that’d you’d loose range.

That's a huge amount. I levelled my Sierra and put on 34" (35" required a huge lift or metal work) I don't think I lost that much. Maybe 1 mpg ... Don't forget, larger tires throws your odometer reading out too. The truck may say 50 miles driven when it was actually like 55 miles in real life....

Same here. 2016 F150 front leveling kit and 33" 10 ply goodyear duratrac 295/65R18 127P tires on stock rims. Went from 19mpg to 16 overnight. Made the truck much more capable off road. No more getting stuck in tall grass.

Don't worry the rain. Her that's on a brand new battery mind you see how long the range is after 50 complete charge and discharge Cycles,because it most definitely will be at least 20 to 30 miles less range.and that's with an empty bed with no passengers.im sorry but that's trash.

People said the same thing a dozen years ago when ford launched the eco boost. It’s going to be junk, you’re going to replace turbos. Ford torture tests the crap out of new technology, especially if it’s going in the F150. I’m in the construction industry and 90% of our guys love their eco boost. The only ones that didn’t were the ones that got the first run with the intercooler issues or the ones that expected 24 mpg towing a 7k pound trailer. Otherwise, from what I’ve seen and heard and also from our own fleet, the issues are rare and random.

Try the recon grappler I have them and previously had ridge grapplers, the recons are definitely quieter and handle better in the rain and still look really good

Tesloop has been quick charging their various evs everyday multiple times a day for year's in their taxi service. So far the best pack lasted over 300k, with most lasting 200k. Modern ev batteries that are liquid cooled with very advanced bms are well designed to handle the strain fast charging puts on the pack. 👍🏻

Ford should give you guys some sort of additional funding if they don't already, because your videos on the Lightning are making me excited to order my own when the order banks open back up for MY 2023.

They're on backorder for 3 years. Any MY 22 that doesn't get filled will be pushed to a MY 23 and so on. By the time you get it, hopefully a new administration will correct the damage done and fuel will be $2 bucks again..

No lost time for maintenance No lost time for fuel stops On site generator Secure Gear storage Maintenance & fuel $ Even at $2/gallon im charging it off the roof of the shop for the same at 15mpg with payload & 8-10 towing. It likely won’t get to $2 flat ever again anyway. I expect gas to be $4/gallon average over the next 7 years and if anything I’m low not high.

Looking at buying this next early 2023. I saved your info and I am so in. I am getting exactly what your set-up is. Excellent video. I have been researching for months and almost went with the Rivian and then the Silverado, but then comparing the cost, the ability to charge my home during a blackout for $4 k extra and the reliability. I like the looks of the Silverado a bit better but not for the cost difference and it won't charge my house.

Great test! Loss of range with leveling happens in gas vehicles and it will in EVs too. I think for a first generation EV, Ford did a really great job on this truck. There are still some hiccups to work out, but this is a very promising start.

@@codytoddy Towing? If it’s a gas truck I doubt that. Your mileage will be cut in half easily. Diesel is a different story.

I had the same tires on my truck so it's cool to see that it's possible to do with the lightning. But I don't think I'd do that with the standard range battery. It's one thing if you're slicing off 13% of a 400 mile range but I wouldn't want to limit the range any more. Looks cool though.

Unless your daily drive is at the limit of the standard battery pack (200ish miles), reducing the range by adding larger tires will not make any difference. If you only drive 30mi (average American) to 150mi per day, these tires and lift will not cause any problems.

I wouldn’t lift or level one, but that’s just me. My commute is about 90 miles per day, but once or twice a month I do about 150. I do have a fast charger on my way home though. I’m going to consider one when the new wears off and the prices and supply stabilize. I’ll keep my old SUV for the occasional trips out of town.

Just a personal experience…I had a buddy with a 13 Silverado and he leveled it and put on bigger tires, but kept the stock wheels. He dropped from about 18 mpg to about 15. The truck’s aerodynamics are tuned for the front to be a bit lower. You’re catching a lot more air by raising the front a couple inches. The heavier wheels and tires don’t help, but I’d like to see this tested with only the level.

I can't emphasize enough--this test is completely useless unless wind is accounted for. Even a 5mph headwind on the highway destroys the range! It's so annoying that he never mentions wind direction.

The "dual charger" is meant for Level 2 AC charging via 240V 80A circuit breaker supply, AC to DC charging. For DC fast charging such as Electrify America EVSEs, it doesn't use those "dual chargers" but rather goes directly via a dedicated DC (and monitored typically by a dedicated Charge Controller Unit, CCU responsible for communication handshake amongst other things) busbar/contactor/fuse supply to the battery

DC fast chargers aren't EVSEs, and for 80 amp continuous you need a 100 amp breaker. Under US code you can only pull 80% continuous from a circuit, also, breakers generally won't let you, the thermal trip will go off eventually.

@@battousaihimura definitely a semantical argument, I just find the nuances, especially in things that I'm already interested in particularly interesting I thought you might as well. Like, technically, level 3 doesn't even exist, it is just something that a long time ago some people said should be defined at some point but never have. DC fast charging has never been standardized outside of some of the connectors and communication protocols. The voltages, current, and wattages are all over the place. Two different 350kW DCFCs can only deliver that wattage at a two different pack voltages. Really I think before level 3 can become a thing auto manufacturers are going to have to standardize on a pack voltage and cell chemistry, if they could do that DC fast Chargers could get much cheaper to produce, unfortunately, I feel work too early in the game to standardize on a narrow battery voltage, but I do think it'll happen one day.

So just to point out some things: The tires and wheels definitely killed the range more than the lift kit. Also, if he didn’t do the interstate drive as the test he probably would have gotten closer to 200-210 miles of range instead. EVs are already gonna lose some range when driving 65+ and adding bigger/heavier tires and wheels will exacerbate that. So if you were thinking about doing a similar setup and you don’t do majority interstate highway driving, you wouldn’t take the same hit as what we saw here.

@@xxxblanco It’s because they swapped the tires/wheels and lifted the vehicle. Also they used ac. Then tested it with all interstate highway driving. Pretty much did everything possible to have a super poor mile to kwh efficiency number. If you keep it stock the way Ford built it, people get around 3.5m/kwh.

Tread pattern makes a huge difference in rolling resistance and I suspect is 95% of the reason for the reduced range.

I have a ‘18 Silverado and it sits on 33” cooper AT3’s, with a leveling kit. I went from stock 23/24 mpg highway to what I just drove 90 some miles and got 21ish mpg with a 250 steel bumper on the front and dual exhaust. Still doin pretty good on my gasser, can’t imagine what the range would be with all of my mods. People wanna get this fine, knock your socks off. But it’s just not for me and what I wanna do.

13% loss of power translates to more wait time to charge. They need to increase the range to at least 350-400 miles.

I have seen another video of the EV with the bigger battery. They went 1277 miles and had to stop every 200 miles for 40 plus minutes only to charge to 80%. They said it took a total of 5 hours of charging to complete that trip. They need to find how to up the range of miles. My truck now can go 500 miles with the air set at the lowest point.

@@80Bigj I don't know why the trucks are so far behind but the cars are pretty quick on trips. A 1000 mile trip has 1 hour of charging time on an EV6 or Ioniq 5... I don't understand why the Rivian and lightning take 30-40 minutes to charge when the Model 3 and EV6 are 15-25 minutes.

I noticed a huge change in mileage going between KO2s and Kanati Trail Hogs and Goodyear Duratracs (same tread pattern as the Trail Hogs). KO2s have very noticeably less rolling resistance. Going to KO2s allowed me to go up several sizes without losing mileage. Switching to the Kanatis in the same size resulted in a huge drop in mileage.

Great job guys and truck looks amazing. Would have liked to see using the other Pro factory OEM wheels which look better, and offer better offset/inset and keep the tires inside where intended. Also, RIVIAN offers an airlift suspension which is amazing (have driven it). Another option for FORD. Other than that, super informative as usual.

As much as I'm sure it's out of vogue, I'm really curious if lowering the truck would extend the range at all? Really appreciate you guys posting videos like this one which includes the pros and cons

Whoa -- those wheels and tires REALLY make that thing look better! I don't hate the factory wheels at all, but those new ones really look good!

I don't see anyone mentioning this but, you drove until empty approx.175miles. then you added 76kw to the vehicles battery and presumably drove back to the dealer correct? That 76kw did not give you enough range to do so. Did you make it back or did you have to stop and top off again before you got back to the dealership? Looks like the usable range is 140-150 miles on this setup.

You’re reading this wrong. ~ 190 of the state 220 mile range is how far he thinks a charge would go.

Curious, would 34’s fit on the factory wheels? I happen to like the look of them. And secondly, would the 34’s fit the truck without the leveling kit?

You can wrap any wheel in a 34” Also you shouldn’t be able to fit more than a 33” tire on stock truck with no level Level will be needed to fit 34”

Maybe with a slightly slimmer tire it may work better on the stock wheels, like a 275/65/20 (they're about a half in slimmer 10.6 vs 11.1 🤷‍♂️). With a leveling kit of course.

@@MC4D. i would just go with a 275/60r20 once the stock tires wear out with no level I had 275/60r20 on my slightly lifted silvered perfect width rode great not much loss in mpg either

Get something with a mileage warranty. AT3 XL from copper probably an excellent choice This truck is heavy and all that torque is hard on tires.

I looks pretty good, only one suggestion: Change the wheel offset to keep the tire in the wheel well instead of pushing it out. That would improve efficiency.

Aerodynamics are very important, just bringing in the tires would bump efficiency up to 2.1 Mi/kWh

@@heathwirt8919 thats because of the rotational mass gain PLUS a lot of extra creature comforts that add weight and use power. If you want this on bigger tires trade the dealer for the 18” wheels from the pro & powercoat them or better yet buy some really lightweight strong wheels like method forged with a and get 275/70R18s with low rolling resistance like a toyo at3 or cooper xlt AT3 etc both are great everywhere. Less power, more grip, longer life.

Gotta love standing outside when it's 96 degrees for 40+ minutes. Exterior temp really does a number in the cold vs being hot out.

I have a 22 F150 Lariat Fx4 3.5 with blue-cruise. I put a 1” lift on the front and running 35s. So far, blue-cruise works good. I understand a 2-1/2” level kit could have a very different result.

Looks good, what about changing the tire to offroad and keeping the OEM wheel 🔥

Ev is not cheaper. Cost of ownership is still higher than ICE up to 7-10yrs

If you switch to a forged lightweight wheel thats tucked 10mm more and user a lower rolling resistance tire (like the toyo AT3) you would cut that loss in half. Also coal fired power plants are not inefficient, they are just toxic.

Yep. I run the Toyo OC AT3 for that reason. It's just great all around and only a 5% loss vs. regular all-season pavement tires (not 13%) - also no level, which costs aero.

Get me a 300 mile range towing minimum of 4000 lbs and it MIGHT make sense to purchase one to use as a truck is intended, as long as you don't mind a 1 hour "fuel" stop. Until then, EV technology is good for passenger cars only imho.

For that you need 50kWh x 300 + 10% reserve = 165kWh Battery. Look at the Rivian, that first iteration comes close to what you need. I need 350km in winter storms without towing. I drive a Model Y plenty of range. I would like a larger vehicle but there is none available. And i vehemently refuse to use any fossil vehicles or any other fossil ressources. I‘m through with financing the Russian murderer and the Saudi slavers.

Hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of new pickups are just used as passenger vehicles. It’s cool that you still use your truck for heavy work. ICE trucks will still be available to buyers like you for a long time. But for the vast majority of pickup owners who use their trucks to commute to the office, pick up the kids from school, and haul a boat a few miles in the weekends, the Lightning actually makes way more sense than an ICE pickup.

Would not altering the ride height affect the payload calculations with the advanced trailer towing pack as well?

It can also affect the ADAS systems on the truck. The cameras and sensors are calibrated for a stock truck and stock ride height. I would be curious if lifting it throws them off.

Nice job guys. I have a question. What do you think the range / mpg loss would be on a gas 5.0?

To be clear, the dual charge controller is for the AC-to-DC home install and is only applicable to the Charge Station Pro. The DC fast charging is only a single unit capable of receiving a continuous 150kw of power. This is the same DC fast charge unit capacity across all FORD EVs

One of my main concerns with EV charging is the time it takes to charge. Now, once more of them come and range gets better, this will become a non issue for most part. Then we’ll be back to cost to charge as it will definitely get more expensive as time goes on

The cost to charge is only related to the cost of electricity not the size of the battery or range of the vehicle. 90% or more of the time, an EV owner will charge at home where it doesn't matter how long it takes to charge. If you're the kind of person who takes long trips and/or tows a trailer/boat/camper then this ain't for you yet. If you're an average American, a truck like this will not change your lifestyle in the least...well, other than not having to get and pay for gas.

I'd love to get the extended battery model which charges faster, however because the extended battery is gate kept behind both a higher trim over the Pro and being a $20k option, you're looking at $30k just to get a slightly bigger and faster charging battery, insane!

if you charge from home, think about all the time you will save from not waiting in line at a gas station. On the way home from work when I need to fill it can take 30 mins to actually get gas. (long lines in my area) If I never had to go to the gas station, it would save me at least an hour a week.

Yeah, that is a genuine concern. Electrify America stations are awesome for this reason. You can get 60-80% in like 15 - 20 minutes. I usually just plan to grab a bite to eat and it's fully charged (90%) before I'm done eating on every long trip I've taken so far.

Not just 80 lbs, but 80 lbs changing the moment of inertia on the wheels. That’s a significant loss in efficiency. Also changes drive ratios as well

When comparing the struts, there's a lot of different part numbers, except for the strut mounts. It appears the front strut mounts are the same part number across all F150's. The part number for the rear strut mount is also the same on the front. I wouldn't recommend installing a level kit on the rear....but you could.... lol

What load rated Ridge Grappler did you go with? That 8k gross vehicle weight has me concerned.

Great test. The rolling mass of the wheels is the majority of the range loss. People don't realize how much more they spend on gas with cooler, heavier wheels, and how much slower their trucks' 0-60 is with them.

If blue cruise wont work with a level kit because of the angle of the cameras, that would also mean it wouldn't work with a heavy payload. I am not sure I buy that it wont work, I think Ford is just doing some CYA.

@@PopsGG in the TFL towing video, it didnt seem to squat that much towing near maximum.

That charger was quite reasonable. He was paying $.1714/kWh. The avg. cost for residential power there (Alabama) is $.1315/kWh. Not bad. His cost using that charger is $.09/mile for that trip. But nothing is free. This truck got 2.0 miles/kWh, where a Tesla Model 3 gets about 4 miles/kWh.

This is how you know this video was a paid advertisement. Electrify America charges $0.43 a kWh. EVGO charges $0.34. These are not including membership fees, TOU fees, standing fees, session fees, etc., which can substantially raise that final per kWh cost. And you have to count all the membership fees you are paying whether you used that company service or not on this particular charge, because that is part of your total monthly or annual cost to put energy in the vehicle.

It’s great test. I could understand the weight of tire is affecting the fuel mileage significantly. Magnesium wheel would improve the fuel efficiency then aluminum alloy.

rolling weight has virtually zero effect on fuel economy vs stock. It's all loss of aero

Doesn't sound like much until you stop short getting to a charger.😵‍💫 The only problem with electric you just have to plan more.

I wonder how much more efficient a regular gas F150 would be with all that aero and low rolling resistances business.

There is an electronically deployed air dam extension under the front bumper on all F150s. Supposedly that helps a bit with highway mileage and aerodynamics. It’s hard to tell when it’s working unless you have a camera under your truck to actually watch it deploy haha.

@@lawnmowerdude If I'm not mistaken, the regular F150 has grill shutters. So, I don't know how big of an improvement a fully closed grill would be. However, I think other similar parts could be added to any F150 by Ford.

@@AkioWasRight yeah I think some trim levels do, not sure if they all do or not. Not even sure if my 2021 has them ha. It does have the front air dam extension, though. Honestly, I think it only activates when you switch to “Eco” mode and you’re driving above a certain speed.
