We Learn Why Big Ships Don't Round Cape Horn and Instead Navigate The Strait of Magellan [Ep. 125]

Who doesn't love a good short cut? We discuss sailing around treacherous Cape Horn vs taking the famous Strait of Magellan and how it's navigation is different for big ships and small yachts as we sail through these dangerous waters overnight.

Best sailing channel on KZread. You all are amazing. Kate sure is a tough worker and does it all with a smile. Seems she has the language barrier solved too. The scenery is something we would never have seen if you all had taken the easy path to the Pacific. Thanks for the effort to make these videos. Keep having fun, stay warm and stay safe. Bill

In 1982, in the Navy, on a destroyer I transited Magellan. Stopped at Punta Arenas, an annual stop for US ships, with many fond memories. We traded them several boxes of Mickey Ds' burgers for abolutely huge lobsters. I think they had the poorer end of that deal, but they craved our offering. I've watched several of thise Magellan transits, but not seen, nor heard comment, of what I saw. It seemed that every time I came topside I'd see a ship wreck; masts sticking up out of the water, a capsized ship missing rudder and props, the gracefull curve of a ship on its side. Seeing that made me very glad for our 180,000 watt sonar, clearly heard on deck, pinging all the way.

Hello Kate and Curtis. As a regular sailor through those waters, I think the videos you make are extraordinarily good. It's so nice for me to see how you face the same challenges, find similar solutions and feel the same admiration and the joy of sailing in Patagonia. In addition to being such good sailors, you are always so happy and positive! Roxy is the one who enjoys it the most when you land on a beach!! Congratulations and I wish we meet some day if you're still in Puerto Montt.

You commented that you were planning to hit a channel at high tide to get slack. It is counter intuitive, but the currents and tides do not operate on the same timeline. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we also have huge tides and currents. In my home waters, we get tides that exceed 15'. In one of our more notorious passes, you can get up to 10-knots of current on those days. You would expect the slack to be at the high and low tide, but it is actually 3.5 to 4 hours after the corresponding high and low. Because of that, we more often see max current at the high and low tides. I have found that when I need to motor into a significant headwind, if I put out a little bit of the roller furling head sail and sheet it tight and then tighten down on the windward sheet to pull the clew about 12" to 16" then fall off just until the sail fills, I will have much greater speed through the water and less pounding. That is because the forward force from the sail is pulling on the masthead which does not allow the bow to rise and fall with the waves.

This is the kind of sailing content that I have been looking for. I got a response from Kate (I think?) on YT sailing channels group after other people expressed frustration at getting a lot of 'where' and activities from sailing channels and not really focusing on sailing content. I can see a nature hike with trees here hundreds of miles inland. This is gold, it never occurred to me there were fjords in south America and just thought everyone had to round the dangerous cape. Real sailors finding real solutions to real problems is exactly what I was looking for in content.

Hi, Curtis and Kate. I can really get into the scene(s). Big tides and currents and what, boats? Wow. I was watching Kate let out the anchor, then I blinked and Kate was head over tea kettle down the chain locker! It made me laugh just seeing her legs and butt sticking out. But she emerged with sea monster tentacles and quickly threw them overboard! Great job you guys. Roxy is looking very healthy, too.🌬️⛈️⛵

12:00 can't help but think, what Magellan would think about all this navigation aid. They could just about guess their rough longtitude at that time. And about the engine :) as for the title. i guess Cape Horn is sufficently infamous to answer the question.

Having read their book, I would say that expense is not their primary consideration. Equally are those in super-duper motor yachts unconcerned. However, there is the risk of spiling your martinis onto your evening wear.
