We kayak and fish at an AWESOME Sierra Lake!

On this trip I team up with my buddy Shawn to kayak and fish one of the most beautiful lakes in the Eastern Sierra's. Convict Lake is located just minutes from Mammoth Lakes and is situated against a spectacular backdrop of the Sierra Mountains. The lake has boat rentals, a general store, cabins, restaurant and bar. During this trip we also visit the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center as well as Mammoth Village, and on the last day I take a trip out to the Upper Owens River to see what the conditions are like and flyfish the river.

    next time you guys should take the yaks out to crowley. There are a few roads off Benton crossing rd that take you to green banks/north landing where you can launch right off the shore to some good water. You can't camp right on the lake in that area, but there is good BLM all along Benton crossing. There are some very crowded hot springs too. Fish midges just off the bottom under an indicator

    I have camped and fish Convict Lake as well as Convict Creek which flows down to Lake Crowley. They said in the video that they were not sure if there were Brown Trout in Convict Lake. There are! I caught a 5 lb Brown there as well as smaller Browns in Convict Creek.

    I have a similar stainless steel fire pit that I use pellets in. The advantage is the clean up which is almost none after the fire burns out. You haven't lived until you surf your kayak back to the boat ramp at Convict during the late afternoon winds! Cowabunga dude!

    Thank you for sharing! Silver Lake is a long generational vacation spot. In fact my daddies ashes were sprinkled in the stream that runs into Silver Lake. It’s been years since I’ve been there but want to go back. I enjoyed your video as I remembered many great times. Just some fyi’s those trees in Silver Lake are always there in water. Also, Walter Lance owned a cabin there on Silver Lake. 😊

    Great video! Thanks. Convict is where we stay. Most of our fishing is at the Upper Owens that you were showing. If you go in the fall you can usually drive all the way in. Fish average 2 lb. There are some bigger ones also. Convict does have browns and cutthroat along with rainbow. Best fishing is at the inlet. Caught a 7 lb. Rainbow on 4lb. test. What a ride. My buddy caught a 5 lb. Brown. There are trips though where we hardly get a bite. Convict Lake is fisherman's heaven.

    Yes thanks for the comments! In my "Part 2 - Mammoth Lakes & the Upper Owens" video about a year ago I caught a nice Cuttthroat...not huge but decent. It can be hit or miss but I really don't care, the location makes up for it - same for Convict Lake!

    My brother and I went to Benton Crossing to fish the upper Owen’s river and there were thousands of mosquitoes. They chased us out of there. I went there about 5 years ago to try it again and no mosquito’s. I guess it’s kinda touch and go around there.

    Mike I also have the same tent. Could one mount a canoe on top? Curious as I see you have a kayak up there. How did you mount it?

  • @flyfisher530

    @flyfisher530

    10 ай бұрын

    Alucab has load bars for top of the tent. A canoe would be possible but keep in mind if makes opening tent difficult. I went with a 55 lb kayak which was at my limit for lifting the tent. Thanks for watching!

    what kind of rack setup is that for the two kayaks?

    My Alucab rooftop tent has the option for standard vehicle type roof racks to be installed on top of the tent (made by Alucab). My kayak is just strapped down to those load bars. Shawn is similar, I think he had Yakima racks for his kayak. My rig walk-around video has more information.
