3 things happened here and all 3 are 100% the fault of the victim: 1- failed to secure loose items on a ride with several inversions. 2- ignored all warnings posted on the fencing 3- expected preferential treatment pertaining to the retrieval of lost items which is also posted everywhere and has been a park policy for decades.

Same exact thing happened at cedar point about 6-7 years ago. Man dropped his phone, jumped fence to get it, then gets hit and killed by the coaster. Whatever object you’re trying to get it’s not worth your life.

Yea, I agree that the park shouldn’t be liable for this man’s actions. An adult that should have known better. But I bet that the family still tries to sue and the park will settle. They will get go away money because it’s cheaper to settle than it would be to go to litigation even if the park won the case. They’d pay more in legal fees to fight it.

I hope the park is NOT charged. Imagine being sued because someone decided to climb your fence, climb onto your roof and fall to his or her death because he or she was trying to retrieve a lost drone (WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION). The same goes with this man and his lost keys. Its a horrible tragedy, but it was due to the man's impatience and negligence. The park put the barriers and SIGNS there to keep people from doing what he did. No one gave him permission, either. If the park is somehow held responsible (beware of people suing you for climbing on your roof without permission!) I hope that all that is asked of them is that they make accommodations for people who have lost keys or wallets, such as maybe free meals and a few game tokens - free when the keys and wallets are found/retrieved at the end of the day. That way, the park would be minimally liable (as wrong as being liable is) and that people would be less likely to use impatience for an excuse to do something stupid, dangerous and against park rules.

It would come down to how well secured the area was and how aware someone would be made of the potential hazards. If the area was completely open, then the park would be grossly negligent. How about the riders who had to likely be treated and traumatized? They should be able to recover from possibly needing medical treatment and emotional distress.

@@sonicpsycho13 the restricted areas are not wide open. There were two very tall fences that you have to bypass to enter. Climbed over both and I guess started looking for his keys. It doesn’t seem to matter how tall a fence is or if there is barbed wire… someone, somehow is going to breech that if they are determined. It’s not the first time someone has pulled a stunt like this and sadly and tragically the outcome wasn’t good.

If anything, anyone one that ride who needed medical treatment for their legs should be suing HIM for their injuries, never mind the trauma. Really, it's amazing at that speed there weren't any broken legs or worse.

Do not blame the park, the ride, manufacturer or the ride ops.. Pure ignorance caused this. Kings Island should not be liable for this in any way. The man was impatient and broke the rules.

@@joliebokeh1958 I was just there last weekend. I had to put my things in a locker. I had sunglasses on but I also had strong sport straps holding them in place. I learn my lesson from last year. This is just a case of not wanting to be inconvenienced and probably gotten away with it before. I hate to speak ill of the man but he knew better

This goes beyond ignorance. He climbed two fences that were clearly marked with signs. He put not only himself, but other people in danger. If I was one of the riders with cuts and scrapes, I'd sue him or his estate for damages.

So sad... but so preventable! Too bad his impatience cost him his life and his children a parent. 😢 Yes it's inconvenient to not have access to your car.. but use Uber or ask a friend or family member to pick you up. So, so sad. This never had to happen. Hope other impatient ppl take heed n learn from this! My heart goes out to all those involved, especially the poor ppl that were on the ride; a day of fun turned to horror! 😱

My keys flew out of my pocket at Magic Mountain on X2! What did I do? I called my brother who came to the parking lot with the spare. I didn’t climb fences or ventured into unsafe territory! Worse case tow your car home and call a locksmith! People don’t respect their own lives anymore.

Yeah probably would have Ubered home if I was in such a hurry to leave and came back the next day to see if my keys were located. If not call a locksmith and have them rekey. It’s an expensive lesson especially when you have to rekey a FOB but it can be done and in some case maybe your insurance covers it? The point is there are many options. And those options all would leave you alive and well

As soon as I heard “ man was in restricted area “ I did not care anymore. It’s his own fault. I grew up at kings island and worked there . When I hear something tragic I generally feel for someone who was just trying to have a good time. But when “ breaking the rules” comes into play I stop with the sympathy.

@@iamredeemed73 there have been a few in the past few decades. There was an incident… or several incidents that took place at Kings Island where several people were unalived on the same day. The called it Black Sunday. It must’ve happens some 20 years ago or so. Three guys were electrocuted when they came in contact with a pond with a broken water pump. Apparently the electrical cable that powered the pumps was broken and electrified the water so when they toubed the water they got shocked. Tow of those guys didn’t make it. And in the meantime a woman fell from a flat ride when she passed out while riding and slipped from the restraints. She also didn’t make it. I was recently at the park for the first time and I saw the pond where the two guys passed. It’s still there, and so is the little water fountain that had the broken cable. There used to be to be a foot bridge that crossed over the pond. That’s gone now and there is a fence sound the entire perimeter is the pond. There is no way any guest can come in contact with the water unless they get on the other side of the fence. I don’t know if this is a result of the accident or not but after seeing the area it does give a bit of a foreboding feeling. That strange because I have never been to the park before and had no idea where is pond was. Yet when I saw it at the park, I knew this is where it happened. You would never know something terrible happens there because it is a very calm and beautiful area. Still I love Kings Island and look forward to my return.

Ever since I almost lost one of my flip-flops on an amusement ride, I always make sure my shoes are tight and everything else is either deep inside my pockets or in a locker rental at the park.

Same here in fact I am going to an amusement park at the end of the month. I already broke in my new shoes and have my small bag I always use for the parks cleaned out and ready. Also, if you are at the park with friends or family and one of them don't plan to ride the same ride as you ask them to watch your stuff. This is also why you should have a spare key. Some rides have where you can put your items in a bin. You can usually put the spare key in one of those magnetic hide a key that you can stick somewhere under your car. Or heck tape it somewhere under the car. Or have shorts with zipper pockets.

Yes unfortunately. I am truly sorry for what happened to him but he did cause his own demise. He wasn’t a child.. he was a grown ass man that knew better. But as you know the family will try and sue for something, and Kings Island will pay them “go away” money because it’s cheaper than trying to fight it even if they are 💯 not liable

When I was about 13 the same thing happened to me and at not point in time did I think I should go look for them myself. It didn’t even occur to me to ask the attendants if they could try to find them, I just figured there was no way they would be able to since it was dark at the time. To risk your life for some keys with your kids waiting on you is wild to me.

This exact accident has happened a few times before, there are KZread channels all about rollercoaster accidents to tell you about it. The families always sue even though it was the person's own fault crossing safety multiple fences, and the parks always have to settle to end it. It's so stupid. They shouldn't be allowed to sue, what else are the parks supposed to do to keep people away from those areas? Electrify the fences? They'd probably get sued for that too.

We were at great America in Illinois when I was 17 and my friend lost his wallet, hat and keys on raging bull. I jumped off the exit ramp and found his wallet and keys but couldn’t find his hat. My friends pulled me back up and as we were leaving the ride we hear over the speakers the ride is shut down and then security comes running past us and we were like what was that about. Well they caught back up to us later and told us I could have got hurt and that we were being thrown out of the park. Thank goodness the owner was there and met us and let us apologize and keep our season passes and stay in the park. But yes never do this. You give them your info and they will mail anything you lose in the mail to your house if you tell them.

It burns me up when people say amusement parks are unsafe and then cite cases like this. The majority of injuries and deaths at amusement parks are caused by the patrons themselves doing something stupid, like entering a restricted area, standing on a ride, or demanding to be let on when unable to ride properly (too heavy, missing a limb, or other situations). Some accidents ARE the fault of the amusement parks, but they are very rare. Sometimes it is even because they are bullied into something that a rider or rider's parent demands of them.

Many of these companies have policies against individual employees speaking with the media. The employee probably asked to be made anonymous in order to avoid retaliation from the company.

Lockers are $2.... zipper pockets work well.... very sad situation overall, but plan ahead and store your stuff safe. I learned the hard way myself at Cedar Point with my wallet, forgot all about it on Maxair and lost all cards. Got most back AFTER close with the parks help and a few good guests! Gotta stay safe first man. Unfortunate this happened.

I get it. It was definitely his fault, but why are people bashing him so hard in the comments? A life was lost, one way or another, and his family is mourning. I can't imagine going online as someone from his family and just seeing so many comments calling him stupid, ect. That would be so horrible.

It is better going home several hours late instead of going the hospital or to the morgue. It is more convenient to be aggravated and having to stay at the amusement park longer than you want to than to have your family attend your funeral. Warning and Danger signs are not suggestions.

Dude Literally! Like how is the common sense not there at all, like you rode the ride!?!? And now every roller coaster at universal has free lockers and most have metal detectors & requires that you cannot have ANY loose items. I’m happy the lockers don’t cost extra anymore but it’s a little annoying not having your phone for the entire queue on hulk for example. But I think they have a great setup on VelociCoaster with the lockers being like right before the ride & being double sided so it’s super quick to load and unload. It seems like they also have cameras throughout the restricted areas now and the cameras seem to continuously cycle in the control room (as far as I’ve seen while loading) and if the cameras see a person it must alert the control room & show the camera or the operator is very attentive because as soon as someone goes over a fence even a little bit (to take a picture) they emergency stop the ride within seconds, which is completely understandable and a good thing to prevent harm but also a bit annoying as a rider. It seems sea world/busch gardens have the same setup as well, they let us stay on the ride and ran it again thankfully. I assume Disney has the same setup but I haven’t been there in ages.

When you lose your mind from losing your keys

I grew up going to Kings Island. People get hit and killed by coasters there more often than you would think. Its literally impossible to get hit by them unless you spend a considerable amount of effort entering an area which is obviously extremely lethal to be in. I don't feel the least bit sorry for anyone who gets hit by a coaster. In fact, thank goodness the coaster took them out before their ineptitude could eventually hurt someone else.

@@SGobuck 5 deaths is more than what most people think. Pretty sure a lot of people had no idea this has ever happened before, let alone 5 times. I know your old brain doesn't work anymore but try to take a moment to think before you respond.

And this is exactly how having a "customer is always right" mentality is wrong. This man thought he was smarter than the employees and that he could just do whatever he wanted. Restricted is restricted for a reason.

He was frustrated and wanted to get his young kids home. That was unwise but I hate that he lost his life and the kids lost their father.

The only ones I feel bad for is the family members of the stupid people that do this and I think we all remember the Raptor incident. When I seen the title of this video I slapped my forehead and was like "Not another stupid person." Also, my main concern is did his two kids see it happen?

So eerie! I was just there last weekend. It’s such a tragedy when accidents happen at amusement parks. My heart does go out to the guy that was injured but in all fairness he caused his own injuries and possibly his own life… I hope not.. I hope he makes a full recovery. Last year I lost a pair of designer sunglasses at Six Flags Magic Mountain while riding Full Throttle. I was told the same thing. I would have to wait for the park to close before anything could be done and if the sunglasses could be spotted they would be sent to lost and found. I actually went to lost and found and opened up a case. Well I never got my sunglasses back. A very expensive lesson to learn and highly frustrating at that. However it’s never worth your safety or your life to bypass restricted areas because you think you can find your things yourself and can avoid or outrun a multi ton vehicle traveling at over 60 miles an hour. I was there from out of town and if I lost my keys it definitely espoused have ruined my day but I wouldn’t have climbed fences to try and get my keys. The staff and other guests along with this man’s children are no don’t traumatized by the incident. It didn’t have to be this way. It may not be the parks fault but I can guarantee you this family will still try and get money out of Kings Island/Cedar Fairs. And they will end up paying some sort of ‘ go away” money to the family whether the man survives or not.

My heart goes out to the people in the first row of the coaster. I hope that none of them have any broken bones in their feet or legs. (It is easy to not realize some of these bones are broken until days later. Sometimes never realize it.) If they do have injuries that need treatment I hope that the person that jumped the fence is able to pay their medical expenses and any lost wages.

@@erniecolussy1705 as far as we know, no riders were injured. That’s a blessing and a miracle as far as I’m concerned. As for the man that got clipped by the roller coaster train.. he didn’t make it. He passed a couple of days after the incident. I was hoping he would recover even though I think he was an idiot moron for bypassing a restricted area and willy nilly started looking for his lost keys while there was an active moving train on the tracks.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Although in this case, I think he lost the game.

Inverted coasters present a challenge similar to trains. A train is several feet wider than the rails (about 3' on each side, sometimes more for wide loads). Folks who have never paid attention to that sometimes get hit by trains because they think everything is okay as long as they're not standing on the rails/ties. It's even less intuitive to someone trespassing in an inverted coaster's space that they're in its path. I wouldn't call it a design flaw, but it's certainly a peculiarity. There aren't as many new inverted coasters being built these days, but I'm sure each new design starts with a debate of just how close they'll get to the ground and, thus, any trespassers.

I feel so bad for the family..RIP.

For the family I do for him not so much.

Why can't the ride be stopped for someone to retrieve their keys? The man told them he and his family had to leave. So, instead of stopping the ride for 15 minutes, he is told to wait until the park closes? For how long? Ten, twelve hours? Then walk to the lost and found, hoping they had the man's keys. The ride's operator probably would forget and be told to return the next day. Do you realize how far that family would have had to walk to find a hotel?

It was reported that the man died of his injuries. The first thing he should of done was to go to customer relations and explain the situation. If he couldn't get the keys right away, he should call someone to get a ride to wherever he was staying. Sometimes people react instead of thinking things through, sad but true.

Banshee roller coaster is in the exact same spot where Son of Beast used to be.

That guy caused more than just damage to himself for being an idiot, but imagine the emotional trauma to the riders, especially the ones near the front who ended up experiencing the brunt of the ride hitting the guy. That’s not fair to them and wish them well because gosh that’s just something out of a horror movie or something… 🤦🏽‍♀️

When I worked at an amusement park we had a coaster with a relatively small footprint. If a guest said they lost an item inside of the roller coaster perimeter, we would notify the foreman who would communicate with ride ops and ask for a momentary pause so a maintenance person could go retrieve it. I don't know what the protocol would be for a larger coaster but I'm not surprised the guest was told to wait until the end of the operating day. That being said, it's never never never a good idea to jump barriers around a functioning amusement park ride.

It's definitely not the park's fault.

Worked the Manta coaster, this scenario was always on my mind. You won't get much sympathy from me when guests insist on ignoring every warning and opportunity and yet still come and tell us they lost their phone or keys.

The employees did everything right. This man put his impatience over his life.

A man lost his life and children lost their father. That's really sad 😔...its not the parks fault but it is tragic.

The park isn’t liable for ignorance .

I’m a pass holder at Kings Island. I was there the day this happened. I’m so glad I didn’t witness that man’s stupidity. I hope all the people who were directly involved recover from such a traumatic event and I hope the 2 children who were with him weren’t his own.

Thank god the Banshee crew doesn't have to work. Raptor crew in 2015 were forced to work the ride the very next day, awful.

I’ve been to both parks and you can just tell that the employees at Kings Island are treated a lot better. They are a lot happier and more respectful. Always ask if it’s okay if they have to push down your lap bar as opposed to cedar point who just smooshes your stomach so you can’t breathe the entire ride lol 😂 took me off guard the first time I was there

Sometimes being patient is better than basically losing your life over lost keys. I feel bad for his kids :(

This is exactly like the 2015 Raptor incident at Cedar Point.

raptor is my favorite coaster there and i still think of that incident when i ride it.

I feel so bad for those kids. He had 2 children with him when he did this. I hope those kids stayed back with someone when the man decided to do this, and they did not have to watch their father die. It is bad enough that they lost their father, they don't need to see it happen, too. You would think that people wouldn't be so reckless when they had others depending on them. He had kids to provide for, and he went and did that. Sad.

The only one to blame here is the person who got hit. Making the park not at fault. As there were multiple warning signs that you should not be there they were even told him. We will retrieve it when the park closes just chill essentially. But he decided he wanted special treatment. Well he got a special treatment all right. Now the people who were hit because of the person's negligence being in an area he shouldn't be should sue that person in the park should sue him as well.

One of the only things the park could have done different is having cameras monitoring the restricted areas and when detecting a person it would show the camera in the control room. Parks in Orlando do this and it’s really annoying when someone goes over a fence to take a picture because they immediately stop the ride in its tracks and security escorts them out of the park but it takes a little bit for that to happen & get the ride reset properly, thankfully most of the time they’ll let you stay on the ride or they’ll unload, reset, and put you right back on. The only other thing that would have prevented this is providing lockers and requiring that your pockets be empty before getting on the ride (go through medal detectors). Universal has done this on their roller coaster rides & it’s eliminated the lost item problem entirely. It’s important that the lockers are free on optional pocket emptying rides as well because more people will use them. Obviously he is at fault for ignoring common sense, jumping fences and ignoring warning signs and being unaware of his surroundings (like the train coming at him), but these two thing are the only sure fire things that could have prevented this.

I always keep my keys in a locker, zero fault of Kings Island, is he not aware a person was beheaded at Six Flags Over Texas for doing the same thing at the Batman ride?

That man clearly did not use his head. Now his children have to see him in the hospital and pray that he survives. This was totally avoidable. The park should not be held liable whatsoever. I hope he lives so that he can set a better example for his children. Right now, however ... his children are learning that a lack of patience can be more costly than losing time waiting for the right opportunity to achieve a goal... in this case, getting the keys to the car.

All he had to do was calm down for a moment and call someone.

Kings Island is definitely not at fault for this.

The park should sue the guest for lost revenue due to the ride being down.

That doesn't make any sense. You don't pay to ride, you pay to enter the park and then you can ride whatever you want. They have about a dozen other coasters. They didn't lose any revenue from 1 ride being closed that day. Don't comment if you have literally no clue at all what you're talking about.

The fact that I was on that same ride not even 20 minutes before this happened.. 😨😶

Everyone starts off with how dumb this guy is and this and that...my first thoughts are these children that went to the park with their dad for a fun time and for the last time. I do not k ow how old the kids were, but that's traumatizing no matter how old and heartbreaking. While I see plenty of post saying how bad this society is and how dumb. This guy is I am hardly seeing any empathetic post of the tragedy for the family who lost a loved one. My heart breaks for the children and family. I don't care how "dumb" this decision was. THAT 's what's really wrong with this society. People lack sympathy and love for anyone else but themself

Reminds me of another rollercoaster accident I heard about in a video. It was pretty much the same thing that happened. A guy dropped his hat, climbed into the restricted area, and got decapitated by the rollercoaster vehicle.

People make mistakes and I realize this was a big one however may God be with his family and I'm so sorry he lost his life❤

For anyone to put any blame on the park or employees are fools! This incident was solely the man who got struck by coasters fault and his alone! U are told u have to wait until its closed. I get it u want to go. But to just hop a few fences and ignore the warning signs then u accept any consequences from that. Just like folks that need to fly on the highways. such a big rush to go somewhere. Which in most cases is not important. To only get pulled over by police and be held up while u get tickets losing that few seconds u gained by doing 100mph or worse and crash your vehicle and either become really late to whatever was so important u had to fly on highway. Or have a horrible accident and you and whoever else u take out never get to whatever was so important because u didn't survive that crash. Hope the man makes a full recovery. seriously can't teach common sense. Either u got it or you don't!

I remember being a kid and seeing a restricted area right by a roller coaster. Being a kid, I didn’t understand why it was restricted. After hearing similar stories to this one, now I understand

She said he was hit in the head while searching for his keys in a restricted area after they had fallen from his pocket.

I was there on that same day and I rode all the roller coasters and me and my family wanted to get back on the banshee and they said it was closed for the night two days later my brother told me what happened that day😢

Ive been to Kings Island many times since inwas a kid. I'm 54 years old. I've rode everything there many times through the years. I'm still alive. Know why? I have never done anything stupid there on a ride or been in restricted areas.

Two spare keys meaning three different keys total. You leave one at the house/apartment, leave one in the glove box and take the other key everywhere with you.

If I recall, Superman literally decapitated a boy because he was in a restricted dangerous area. Those signs are there for a reason, and the areas are always well cordoned off. The park nor the ride should be held responsible for a guest’s willful negligence and stupidity. Banshee is a great ride and I’d hate to see it decommissioned because of one reckless person

The other riders should sue that guy for endangering their lives and traumatizing them.

i feel sorry for the kids who lost their dad who just wanted to get them home. bad decisions, truly sad and unfortunate.

I'm this man's age and I ALWAYS get a locker when I go to a park like this. Yes, it costs money, but I can keep extra clothes (water rides are brutal lol), my keys, and anything else I don't want wet or at risk.

If you’re gonna be dumb enough to do that why wait til the roller coaster is heading your way? Wait til it passes and then go to retrieve them. But he’s dumb he could’ve told a park staff member and they would’ve probably told the operators to put the ride on hold and then got them but oh well you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make em drink

This guy was an idiot but they could have stopped the ride for 5 or so minutes and got his guys without making him "wait till the park closed."

This happened at cedar point a long time ago to when the sign says do not climb the fence then don't do it if you lose something then it's on you and you will not get it back until the park is closed

There was a guy who lost his hat on a ride in Atlanta. He jumped a fence or two to go get it. He lost his head. The guy should be happy he lived through it. The park should sue him to be honest.

So what happened to the person that got hit? Hospital? Jail? Killed? Never found?

It’s the guy fault for going into area that is fenced off and has warnings signs.

Years ago, I lost a pair of $400 sunglasses on the roller coaster at SeaWorld, they told me this exact same thing… You had to wait until the park was closed and lost and found would have it. I was a bit upset, but didn’t really care when on about my day enjoyed it… Called a few days later to check lost and found they had me come in and I ended up grabbing a pair of some Gucci that were there 😅

This same situation happened at Six Flags a few years back when a young scholar sneaked into a restricted area to retrieve his baseball cap and the coaster came along and knocked his head off.

I know of at least one person who was killed trying to retrieve a lost item while a coaster was still operating. People just don't learn.
