    Let's see, WWII ended in 1945. So that was 15 years before 'the early sixties'. Are you sure the aftermath of the war is the major contextual influence? That's a pretty long 'aftermath'.

    Interesting point, @commontater1785! While I agree 15 years is some time after WWII, I'd argue that the impact of the war on cultural norms, especially regarding gender roles, continued to evolve during the 1950s and early 1960s. I don't think we can ignore the impact of WWII on the second wave of feminism in the US. Jackson's novella serves as a commentary on these persistent societal expectations, and a lot of meaning within the text would be lost without this feminist literary perspective.
