Still strange that Sony stops producing Blu-ray disks, while Disney and Sony have this contract, that Sony is exclusively putting all Disney movies and shows on physical media

They’re still making blu ray hence the contract it’s the blank blu rays that’s not gonna be made anymore by them eventually. Other companies will still produce those if they choose too. Disney and Sonys deal is still in tact

They aren't going to be producing writable Blu-ray discs anymore. This doesn't effect pressed media.

I really don't understand why they're even licensing issues in the first place. The companies that agreed to be in the game are in the game and no further changes are made, it should be a done deal, not some nonsense where these titles are later retracted and unable to be redistributed because of some licensing agreement that was agreed upon a number of years ago. Absolutely ridiculous! It's like old movies not being able to be released again because they have particular songs in them, ET cetera.

I can play my physical games without signing in online on PS4 & PS5. Like BO3 campaign & offline zombies & plenty Solo Campaign games like Dying Light 2 & others. We learn real quick during times internet or servers down.

Minecraft ships with enough on-disc to be perfectly playable, even if it isn't the recent update. Terraria is the same way. I'm still making a list of what all games I can do this with on PS4/5

Another problem with this gen is the ssds , they havea shelf life and will eventually get slower until they fail, I use the expanded storage 99% of the time to try and slow it down.

That will be evident over time. We will see how this fares - but yes they do have lifespans. Mechanical discs also wear out - but they can be replaced. If my soldered on PS5 SSD dies - can I still use the machine as normal, from the expansion SSD or will it be bricked? That will be interesting. I have a 2Tb drive installed in mine and run them from there to keep the R/W access from the main SSD to a minimum.

Why Xbox and PS only? Why you don't want to include Steam and other PC platforms? If those servers broke down, your games not downloaded will be useless.

All these investors just want easy way to make money but they actually ruining the gamming community and collectors 🤦...only Nintendo will keep things the same

Nintendo is just like any other corporation. They are in business to make money. They have the power to make your cartridge stop working just as easily as any other form of medium games come as. You aren't buying the game. You are buying a licence to play the game, you don't own it. Nintendo is no different from any other company. They may just be a little more consumer friendly.

PlayStation too. PS5 disc games are fully functional with no internet. Moreover, cloud saves are tied to a PS+ subscription on PlayStation. So all PlayStations games save locally on the console.

Even Nintendo will struggle, eventually. Switch Online doesn't have the NES/SNES/N64/GB games to keep me subscribed, especially since I also own a 3DS (and those are easy to homebrew).

Thank goodness sony fixed this with ps4 and 5 but with ps3 your digital games will still be lost when servers shut down

Your physical game is just license to the media that can be revoked at any time and they can also make the next system incompatible with Switch cartridges

Exactly. Nintendo can make that cartridge cease to work any time they want. Each copy of a game, wether it be disk or cartridge, has a unique identification number that companies can block on your NSO, PSN or Xbox live account. Once that happens, your game will no longer work with that account. Sure you can open a new account and try to play the game, but as long as your console is connected to the internet, they will always be able to see if you're playing it.

There needs to be another option where you can either have another account which doesn’t need to be connected connected to the Internet or one account where you can still sign in and enjoy the games like the 360 era

They should let you play the games that you own on Blu-ray and/or that are downloaded on the internal HDD/SSD. Only saving your saves on the cloud, will still be your own problem

I could play both mine PS4 & PS5, from disc & hard drives. My single player games work though. I got hdd external in case Servers go down or internet worked on or down. It's literally a reason I bought it cuz was so boring, I didn't have many preloaded vs majority of cod hdd hogs

They purposely make the Xbox act like that if theirs no wifi so your forced to buy online subscription.

I don't mind the practice of buying games through digital distribution, but I like that it's an option. What I don't like is now they're not even trying to make it an option anymore and make it completely mandatory that you must only buy games digitally. It's very anti-consumer

Don't cear to play online i prefer to play offline if i want to play with friends i have them come over and we split-screen that shit. If games only become digital download then i won't be buying it.

i love physical games,but in recent years,you have to download a part of the game online from servers even with a disc,and owning a disc because of that is no point,if the servers is shutting down that disc wont work,because you cant download the part you need from the server.

The majority of core single player games on the PS4 and PS5 have a complete build of the base game on the disc. And most aren't broken without patches like many believe

Correction Sony is discontinuing production of BD-R disc. Sony have actual entered into multiple deals to make BD movies. Physical is still alive. But the part where the game disc still doesn’t play without internet is just soulless!!

The day they started putting harddrives and Internet into consoles was the moment owning games started dying. It is inevitable at this point. Accept it or stop playing.

What your not thinking about is how much this costs including development nowadays it's bound to happen

I really want to see a console with SSD based cartridges that can be updated over time and have a built-in rechargeable replaceable battery that prevents data loss when not in use. If we don't want physical media to die then we need physical media that can be updated in order to preserve the finished product and not some buggy day one mess.

Honestly, I've never understood this, has anybody else had the experience of losing one of your favorite discs or cartridges and how angry and frustrated that makes you, or a disc gets ruined in some way and depending on what it is, if you want to buy another it could cost up to 1,000 dollars, I wish I still had my pokemon black and white carts, but they're lost, just like my DS is broken, because a lot of people can't really preserve these things like some of you can, and it leads to it feeling more like a nuisance that you could lose at any point, why not just have it be something attached to the console only? So none of those issues would ever happen, and you could say "oh that's ok if that happens and you should accept if you lost it or it broke" but why? If it wasnt my fault then why should I be ok with that? I WANT my game forever, and if it's gonna be tied to my account on the console, than I only have to protect one simple thing, my account, and by this point I feel like we should all be decent at doing that, so I've never really gotten this problem, is there something I'm missing that somebody can explain to me a little more?

I have a bunch of physical PS3 games and a working PS3 but the Blu-ray drive is dead so I can't play them. If they were on Sony's PS3 store I could always buy them on there and buy them. Eventually you can't play games if your old console breaks.

The only reason I don’t wanna switch to pc is I can’t buy all the games I owned over years and years of playing I’d be starting over Ina sense and actually some games are just only on console like exclusive

I own a physical copy of Gran Tourismo Sport. Sony went in and closed the livery editor and stripped all my cars. In the very least I still get to play the and others don't. But WTF. I'm really hesitent to buy a newer gen console because I think they'll shut down my games.

As long as it digital and not full streaming I can still play games. As long if it digital and I can play the games without internet. But I feel once we go full streaming gaming will fail!

That will be the least of your problems, forget about data, the basic city infrastruture will be destroyed if the attacks are successful, say hello to the 1920´s but with less eletricity and with less food due to automated and digital logistic systems dependence on electricity and networks.

No. It didn't. PS4 is still heavily based around physical as well as digital media options. Not all - but most which are digital only are indies or smaller dev games.

This is an Xbox ONLY problem! I don't get why people make it a generlized issue. Playstation 5 disc games are perfectly playable offline.

Why are people still buying consoles? Most games require day one patch and servers to function. You are basically buying a rental box that works until the company decides it doesn't. The only console that still has collector value is nintendo. All other consoles basically have no exclusives you can't already get on PC and with emulators, a PC can play more games than all console combined. A modern console today is basically a walled garden gimped midrange pc.

There is nothing to address. Physical media is going out. That includes movies, music, and games. Have you been to Walmart, Best Buy or Target lately, or have you been to the movies, as they go from the theaters right into streaming services. This is happening but fight the good fight whatever that means to you if you think you need to.

Yep it's just the way it's going, my thing is I'm tired of people not addressing the actual issues with the PS5, in 4 years I'm already having to consider buying a new one, constantly overheating to the point where it's forcefully shutting down now, fan is becoming louder and louder, which btw I've already cleaned my fan, I've cleaned the heat sync, I've cleared the cache, rebuilt the database, my console is in an open ventilated area, I have even plugged my console into its own outlet at the slim chance that it could be a power thing, but none of it worked, meaning my PS5 lasted 4 years, that is a borderline scam if you ask me, and yes I play it a lot, but I have seen other people play it far more than me and they aren't dealing with this, so it makes me incredibly frustrated seeing people talk about this but not acknowledging that some people are literally having to buy another PS5 before the PS5 Pro is even out, it's so bad that it frustrates me
