Before I get into this reaction, and I don’t mean to piss anyone off here: the guy who wrote the screenplay, Jeb Stuart, said he wrote it as a Christmas movie. When the guy who writes the movie (and I know it’s based on a novel, but very loosely) says he meant it to be something, we should probably defer to him.

Only higher authority we could appeal to would be the Director. As far as I know, he never made any definitive statements on the matter, so the writer would probably be the next highest authority.

@@BunBun299 Exactly! It even ends with a Christmas carol and the happy repair of a broken marriage. I mean if It's a Wonderful Life can be a Christmas movie when it's built on the premise of a man who gave up his dreams and then wants to commit suicide and only has a Christmas tree in the very last scene....well, Die Hard definitely has more Christmas than that.

This is as much a Christmas movie as It's a Wonderful Life, which arguably spends a lot less of its screen time set at Christmas. The themes of courage, family, sacrifice, hope, resilience, friendship, and reconciliation are totally Christmas. Plus the SOUNDTRACK is very Christmasy. Howard Ho did a great video on youtube about this soundtrack

First off, Hans was robbing the vault of "bearer bonds" meaning that the bonds are not signed over to any particular individual or corporate entity, they literally belong to the bearer, or whoever has possession of them, like ash. The other thing is I think the plan was to blow the roof when all the hostages and helicopters were there so that there were no survivors. the police would have had to identify all the bodies to account for everyone before they realized that the "terrorists" were not among them (and since DNA identification wasn't a thing when this came out, with most of the bodies vaporized most would never be identified and the "terrorists" assumed dead). By then, they would have slipped their ambulance in among all the other emergency vehicles and drove away in all the confusion unnoticed.

The first posters for this movie didn’t have Bruce Willis’s picture on it cause at the time he was known for comedy not action and they didn’t want people thinking it was a comedy (which it’s kind of an action/comedy). It’s surprising how much control Bruce had on this film. He got to choose the actress playing his wife and how John should act. The list of people that they wanted to play John McClain is interesting. They wanted John Travolta to play McClain but Fox said no cause they figured he was a “has been”. Alan Rickman almost passed this movie up. He barely got to Hollywood and wasn’t sure about his first role being a villain but it turned out to be the best idea. 13:48 when Karl hands Theo the dollar bill was improvised by the actor thinking the guys would’ve had a bet on if Hans would’ve shot the guy. 22:05 originally he was supposed to hit the first vent but the stuntman messed up and didn’t grab the first one so they kept it in and edited in John grabbing the second vent. 33:44 when Ellis says “Hans…Bubby” Alan Rickman’s expression was real cause Hart Bochner ad-limbed the line and threw Alan off a bit. It’s also thought when they give Ellis a glass of coke is because the misunderstood him when he asked for some “coke”. 36:23 at least Ellis did one smart thing before he died. He said John was his guest and not there for Holly. 39:02 the way Hans holds his cigarette is apparently how Europeans hold their cigarettes which was supposed to be how John realized who he was. 55:39 I love how they bring back the watch that Ellis gave her. The look on Alan Rickman’s face is real the director told Alan that they’d drop him on the count of three. They dropped him 40 feet onto an airbag with a blue screen backing 58:40 that’s funny you said that they have a “Die Hard” advent calendar where each day Hans gets closer to falling to his death.

No... this movie didnt come up with Yippie Ki Yay... all this did was ad Morherfucker to it... After Hans says hes an American who wants to be John Wayne... John says "I was partial to Roy Rogers actually"... Roy Rogers was "The Singing Cowboy"... and he had a famous song where he sings Yippie Ki Yay. In the 90s Nickelodon had a cowboy sitcom called Hey Dude.. that used it in its theme song, though theirs is "Yippie ti yie yay... Like the Cowboys Say"

BTW, the look on Alan Rickman’s face when he drops off the building is genuine. They dangled him above an air bag (not as high as it looks), and then told them they would drop him on “3.” I believe they dropped him on “1.” 😄

I just stared following you guys a few weeks ago and am really enjoying your reactions! Glad to see you reacting to this one. Die Hard has been one of my favorite Christmas movies since the first time I saw it in the theater when it first came out! 🎄 Gotta give props to Rob. This is at least the second reaction I’ve watched where Rob has already seen the movie but never says a word throughout, letting Bryce and Zach enjoy the movie without commentary or spoilers (which is also annoying for the viewers as well). 👍🏻👏🏻

Yippee ki yay is an expression said in the old westerns from the 50's starring Roy Rogers. That's why McLane told the others to call him Roy, as he was perceived as a cowboy by Hans.

Thanks, Zuff! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! 💥 John McTiernan directed this one. ෴ To clarify the conjecture Rob made; indeed "yippee ki-yay mutha fucka" originated in this movie... but "yippee" is from the 15th century. And "yippee ki-yay" is likely a derivation of "yippee yi yo ki-ay" which was a lyric in a song from the 1940s called "I'm An Old Cowhand" and was used in a movie. You can hear it sung by Roy Rogers on KZread. That's probably where the character of 'John McClane' heard it from. He seems the sort to like flicks about the Old West.

It would not have been difficult to cash in the bonds because they were *bearer* bonds. These bonds are unregistered, and therefore belong to the whoever *bears* the paper instrument. Hans would just need to present the paper to the issuer on the maturity date and get cash or have money transferred to whatever account he wanted with no questions asked because he had the bond paper in hand. They helped people invest anonymously, but they also were good ways to evade taxes or launder money, and they were convenient things to forge. I don't know if any companies still issue them, but no government entity in the U.S. issues them anymore for those very reasons.

Bein a nurse, I mos def noted that sum medical/mental condition possibly requiring medication is up with Zuff. I AM so proud that he is participating & especially bout yalls patient accepting reactions to his idiosyncracies, erratic movements, answers to his questions, etc. Maybe due to side effects of the 'meds'. Yeah, he took a minute to try to unnerstand this one. All yall are my HEROES! 😊At first I was hesitant bout commenting, but afta reading unknowing/unaware comments bout Zuff, I feel compelled to school folks. I could be wrong but Iown think so. Suma Zuff's zoned out observations & comments are hilarious! 😆KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! MOVIES ROCK!
