Ohhhh, I AM looking forward to the new 40x60 pole barn build. My son in law, north of Houston, TX, just built a 40x60 shop. It's metal with a 6" concrete floor. He's a car buff, so has visions of 2--4 post lifts for stacked storage of 4 cars and a 2 post lift to use while actually working on his cars. I'm really excited for him. Soooo, I can hardly WAIT to see your build. :)

Glad to see you expanding and growing! One tip I might add is to make sure the building has a door on each side, this way you don't have to drive around the building, plus you can pull trailers straight through.

Adam, a word of advice from experience…make sure your builder makes the lean-to the width you want from the building to the posts. A buddy had one built and it is 12’ if you measure the roof, but the 6x6 posts are at 10’6” from the building. I hope that makes sense. Had he said 14’ lean-to, it would have been closer to his desired 12’ useable space.

Be sure to design your shop with an East-West ridge pole. If you decide to go solar (now or in the future) you will have a South facing roof.

Buy 2 or 4 more trusses and make 40×80 you wont regret it one bit!!! My dad and i built one 30×60 after putting everything in wish we would have gone 40× 60. I built pole barns during the summers and everyone went to small, we were going back and adding extra length. Buddy of mine was going to build a 40×60 then had him come to my barn which was already built on my property 40×40. He ended up going 40×80. Which after 5 yrs is glad he went bigger. Not one regret.

How will a semi load of logs be dropped off in the new lumber yard? Will they back in or will you make a road for an easy pull thru? You don’t want to keep moving piles of logs. Get neighbor Doug involved in the planning. There’s got to be a better way

Hi Adam. I didn't hear you say the height of the building. The only big mistake that I made was the height. I did a 30 x 80 wood shop with a 12ft ceiling. I now wish it had at least 16ft or 18 ft. With that height you can add an upstairs office and mezzanine. Also I want to add a lean-to but the eave is low. Did I mention a 14ft x 12ft door is needed. Lumber piles coming in sideways with the loader. I can't wait to see your new building. Have fun.

40x64 is a big building. I live in a 40x70 barn dominium so I can easily see just how much space you'll have. It going to be sweet, especially with the 12' extension on the side. I'm assuming your going to bring electricity to the building. You might want to consider solar with all the open space you have out there. I live 1200' off the road and it cost me $12,000 to bring electricity to my house, which I've also got set up for solar. Had corporate not decided we'd have grid power, I often wonder just how nice of a system I could have gotten using those funds for a solar array and batteries. With some of the solar system out there today. Looking forward to your build.

Adam, something to think about, consider putting the 'lean-to' on the side of the building opposite the house if at all possible. Reason being it would be less noticeable from the porch when enjoying your view rather than looking at equipment storage. That's just my opinion. Of course you could always add one to the other side too!
