    @@paintedcrow these things are more for the fireproof element and being a mild deterrent. If someone is determined to steal your stuff even with the best lock they're going to but you're unlikely to have someone like that in your house in daily life, you're more likely to have a fire, or other disaster (make sure you get ones that's waterproof too), or kids who you don't want to get into the files, or an interfering family member, and in that case you don't usually need a fancy lock.

    it lasts longer than 2 weeks for me, but I still get it. part of it is not figuring out organization that is functional for me. If its not functional I wont put it back there, and it will descend into chaos fast. I am also a very out of sight out of mind person. As in, I space out and forget things easily if they arent somewhere that I can see them, not in the sense that I have them, but in the sense of using them. So for example if I wanna use my skin care it needs to be somewhere visible and easy to reach and put back. Ive been figuring out bits and pieces as I go and its gotten better on some things. Second issue is time, if im in a hurry i am not going to be delicate and careful while pulling out clothes from the closet to not mess up the other folded clothes, or I wont take care to put away towels and linen properly and nicely. If Im going to bed tired as hell and I see something my cat might mess with Im just putting it in the first available drawer. These are the most common things I noticed I struggle with. Id add lack of storage boxes, drawer organizers etc. I usually go through the process twice to 3 times a year.

    With organised chaos you may know where certain things are but if it is chaos there’s a lot that you don’t know the place of, or even that you have it. Not saying you have to switch systems, because not even only the switch itself but the upkeep may not be tenable, however if it’s ‘chaos organised’ for example even if everything was messy, *every* item would be in a place, not just some items in a pile of chaos haha. I definitely fall too easily into chaos and then when I go look I didn’t remember I had 90% of the things I do

I grew up with hoarders and if there's one thing I've learnt across the resources, it's that we keep a lot of pointless stuff because we're sentimental. Touch reaffirms that bond we don't want to have with stuff we don't need. Getting a friend to hold up special stuff so you can maintain both a literal and emotional distance leads to more rational decision making. That said she is AMAZING!! The idea that ‘there is no organised chaos’ is INCREDIBLY INCORRECT Especially for people with ADHD or autism. The idea of superficial organisation *does not work* on us. I don’t care if there’s a literal sign on the box that says “socks”, I will forget it’s there I don’t care how clear everything is organised, I will forget everything and it will *never* stay that way The only way we can remember where things are is if everything is in view, there’s very specific organisation methods made specifically for ADHD and autism, and most of those take up the mantle of “organised chaos” Typical organisation is visual usually, chaotic organisation is incredibly mental Whichever works is entirely dependant on who you are and how you’re brain is wired

    I know Zach was probably just joking, but to answer his question as to why Taysha wasn't organizaing their closets for them is a few things: A) professional home organizers aren't on-call maids, they're more like coaches or teachers assigning homework, B) it's YOUR space that needs to be organized, you know your space and where you want your things, so it makes sense for you to be the one to decide where things go, and C) if she does the cleaning/organizing for you, then you'll be far less likely to make organization and tidiness a habit if you never experience feeling the merits of decluttering firsthand. Again, he was probably joking, I just sensed some frustration-masked-by-humor from him since he made 2 separate comments on the cleaning that sounded passive aggressive to me, and even one of the camera guys told Taysha to ignore Zach.

  • @Celestein

    @Celestein

    As a non neurotypical, I feel that maybe a touch of that joking/frustration was anxiety around organizing. Struggling with 'proper' organization and executive function has made me nervous and stressed whenever I dive into it. I push through it but it's not a pleasant experience; I always fear I'll fail, stall or be in over my head. That's why having patient and constructive help is wonderful, but it doesn't erase all the anxiety. A little part of me still always wants to just crawl in a corner and get away from the scary!

    I started the process of decluttering and spring cleaning just yesterday! Watching this video just makes me want to do more. Recently I've become of the midset less is more when before I had the opposite mindset, and now I want to try and get rid of as many unnecessary things that I've been holding onto for that "one day when I'll possibly, potentially need it" that's never really going to come! It's actually so refreshing and almost like a weight is being lifted off your shoulders because somewhere in the back of your mind you know that you're holding onto things that you will never actually look at until you come around to cleaning once a year!! Absolutely inspiring!

    I really like Zach’s style change over the years. He’s gone from “New York hipster that moved to LA to pursue art” to “established and settled down 30 year old”

    Buddy method got me through a declutter/organization pile-up. It helps to get an outside perspective, someone who has no attachment to the things in dire need of tidying. It also changes the vibe of the space. If you dread tidying every time you enter the room, that negative thought builds over time. I made a group chat to enlist my friends to the task! One time, 2 friends came and neither of them touched a thing, I was powering through by myself. They stood there saying: "You got this!"

    I cannot explain how happy this made me! I love organizing and seeing the before and after of a cluttered space.
