The "drone" in the first verse by Kirstin and Kevin are a nod to how this song is often used in the US. It is often performed at funerals with a bagpipe accompaniment, and that "drone" is part of how a bagpipe operates. Kirstin's belted final verse is such a powerhouse - and then the soft finish from Kevin always surprises everyone!

I can’t imagine that the angels in Heaven sing much better than these gifted artists! This song is only bested by The Prayer which is my very favorite of all they have done. Even though Bohemian Rhapsody is above magnificent, The Prayer is absolutely angelic! This song just has to make everyone want to know God. Thanks for reacting to this song. ❤️ #Pentatonix #PTX

I attended their last 2 Christmas tours and they sang this both years. Talk about goosebumps, especially when they abruptly cut out after Kirstie’s solo with voices reverberating through the arena. They know how to arrange songs to get the biggest emotional punch. ❤❤

They always include a non-Christmas song on their Christmas album. Amazing Grace can be sung anytime of the year. Even if it was a Christmas song, if they’re singing it, I’m listening.

Amazing grace is a poem written by a British Slaver in the late 1700s. He converted to Christianity and gave up slave trading and wrote this. This version is an updated version for a movie on the history of the poem. Kristie and Kevin recreate the drone of bagpipes at the early part of song in a nod to the older tradition.

PTX is famous for moving from one singer to the next which gives you a natural stopping point, as opposed to the middle of the individual singer's verse.

The "My Chains Are Gone" countermelody is by US Christian musician Chris Tomlin, composed for the soundtrack of a 2006 film, "Amazing Grace", about the abolition of the slavery trade in the UK. Kirstie's verse, with all the pauses in the melody, seems to be modeled after a version Tomlin did with just him at the piano. This version is popular with US evangelicals, and I suspect Matt suggested it to the group.

There are several nods to the various arrangements you will hear across the US. The drones for bagpipes, backing Matt. A plucked sound for a harp, like you might hear at a wedding, backing Kirsten. A gospel choir backing Mitch. Always with the velvet braid of sound that is the signature of Pentatonix.

I grew up in church, and with a mother that taught music, I naturally ended up singing in choirs, ensembles, and praise teams. This particular version was very popular and I had sung it many times on stage. When PTX released this, however, I had been out of church (thus out of singing) for two years. It hit me pretty hard. I bawled my eyes out. This was also the first PTX video where my name was in the Patreon list at the end!

This variation was written by Christian artist Chris Tomlin for the movie Amazing Grace, which is about how the song came about during the abolition of slavery in the UK. Has a young Benedict Cumberbatch & Ioan Gruffod in it. Great movie! I just hate that no one ever gives Chris the credit. Yes, PTX sang it beyond beautifully but it’s not their arrangement 🌻🌻

They are better than we deserve. They seem to have the ability to release songs that the world really needs to hear. Some songs that I think fall in that category are That’s Christmas to Me, Sing, Imagine, Amazing Grace, Mad World, Thank You, The Prayer, and Prayers for This World. We need to keep making Pentaholics so people can hear the beautiful and important messages that they regularly put out.
