I was out shooting with my son the other day and told him that out of a million shots I take, 99% are rubbish. He responded with, "That means you've taken 10,000 good shots". That cheered me up a bit.

Since I've been doing landscape photography for 45 years now I thought I'd offer my two cents. Even before I started doing photography, I loved being in the mountains. I sometimes tell people that photography gives me something to do instead of just standing there staring at the scenery. So, the first thing is that you have to love being out in nature. The second thing is that if you want to get the best photos, you have to be at the best places at the best times. I always say that this is one of the many reasons that I'm not a professional photographer. I've never been willing or able to get up at 4:00am to get a photo at 6:00am. But, if like me you do photography for the sheer joy of it, then you know your limitations and don't expect to get the best photos. Third, you don't need the latest and greatest equipment to get great photos. But, equipment does have to serve your needs and not limit what you are trying to do. Fourth, I would suggest learning from other photographers whose work you admire and respect, whether it be from social media, tours, books, or photographs. And finally, get out there and shoot. Nothing can replace hands on experience. If anyone reads this, I hope you have at least as much enjoyment as I've had over all these years doing landscape photography.

This is one of the reasons that I started recently. I currently use a used T7 and some budget lenses, because if I can get the same joy with under $500 of camera gear, that others may end up spending well over $1000 to get, I'm happy.

The 4th tip hit home with me. I would go to a National Park and compare my photos with those in the gift shop. Very disappointing. One must realize someone has taken more time to get the perfect shot. They may have waited a whole year to get the right conditions. They may have taken hundreds of photos of the same scene to pick the best. As a hobbyist, it is more about the memory of being there rather than having a product to sell. I enjoy your cooperative videos. You all have wonderful perspectives on the same subject.

Absolutely, I would enjoy watching a few videos of Nigel finding compositions in Denmark... I would definitely learn out of the process of walking into an environment that requires more work to pull out compositions. As it was shared by James, it is easier to let the environment, light, and weather do the heavy lifting. Perhaps, a lens challenge would be interesting. Kudos to all 4 of you.

This was such a good talk to listen to, thanks. I started shooting on a nikon d50 a friend gave me with a kit lens a battery and a memory card (no manual) about 15 years ago. I was so confused as to what all the buttons did and constantly took bad photos. I genuinely thought at the time maybe there was something wrong with the camera as every image I took was blurry. The nikon d80 came out a few months later so I bought that and read the manual. I know this sounds like the most simple thing ever, but read your manual if you've never used a dslr before. I honesty can't put into words how much my photography improved from that one thing. the second thing that improved my photography the most changing to manual mode, not because manual mode is the best, but because it made me think about every setting and how they harmonise together. I had shot in AP mode for about 4 years because it was simple and I learned more in 1 month of using manual mode than in 4 years of AP mode.

Really enjoyed the video guys. I wouldn't consider myself a novice but it was really great to be reminded of & recognise the elements you talk about. The key for me is , as mentioned, enjoying the craft and the pursuit not the end result but obviously getting a great shot does ease the pain of a wet morning. But the best tip, as you all said, is local knowledge & knowing where to go depending on the conditions & once you find compositions keep returning in all weathers, seasons, times of day & one day you just happen to be there to witness a magic moment & if you lucky get a photo too that's all you need to keep the joy & feed the passion. Cheers.

The main thing I got out of this discussion was how your approaches to landscape photography and philosophies on photographing landscapes are very similar in many regards yet there are plenty of subtle yet important differences among you. Hello guys. Really enjoyed the video and there are so many things I could add, but there is one thing that I think is of paramount importance. James mentioned it in a video not long ago and it's very true (for me)! I no longer go armed with a camera to take photos. I go to interesting place and take my camera with me i.e; my intent is to enjoy what I'm doing and seeing, and if I happen to come back with some quality images ...well, that's just a bonus. Lift the weight off your shoulders to have captured stunning shots, because it rarely happens.

My tip for a beginner that will hook them for the rest of their career, Fill the frame with what you love and leave out the rest. That will teach you the most important skill, Composition. Plus look at the photographers that you respect, don't copy but learn from their process. It will be your Swiss Army knife. You can get O.C.D about this, but this is about getting out and practice, practice, practice!

Great video. It was both entertaining and informative. My tip would be to watch a lot of KZreads on photography in general. Over the years, I have watched many hundreds of videos on everything from gear reviews, to camera functions, to lighting, to composition and all types of photography. Following photographers like you, I have learned everything I know about photography and I am so thankful for it. You guys are such a valuable resource!! My other top tip would be, once you have that knowledge tucked away, the more often you get your butt out of bed before sunrise and go hunting for your subject of choice, the "luckier" you will be at getting great results. You know what I am talking about 🙂

I think the two biggest themes here are just getting out and shooting (and worry less about gear) and then what you do when you get back (your post processing) which depending on the file format you choose (RAW or OOC JPEG) is equally important (extremely important if you shoot RAW as the image must be processed; obviously with JPEG it's optional whether you want to process it further or not). One way someone suggested to me when I was starting out was the shoot RAW+JPEG and if I wanted to use the JPEGs that was fine, but still try to learn how to recreate them from the RAW files using post processing and that helped me. Of course probably taking an in-depth course at some point about Lightroom, Photoshop and/or post processing is helpful too, as there are different workflows, but some workflow elements are common in many people's workflow that it just becomes "best practices".

Get out with camera often, to learn your camera inside out, find some software and learn it back to front, watch videos made by all of these guys in the video, my biggest cost is petrol for the car. Go out in all sorts of weather and times of day - there is no weather you shouldn't go out in, weather changes all the time. Going to epic locations does not guarantee great shots , shoot often in you local area for practice

Hello guys, thanks for this friendly video ! always good to spend some time with you, at least with Nigel and Mads…that I know well. But will visit also channels of Rick and james that I didn’t know. I’m turning 50, French, in the seed business….. and took my first photo with my brand new camera (Lumix G80) in March 21. Honorable mention in some awards in 21 and 22. This year my first exhibition in a restaurant !!. But well this is because all of you, the people of youtube that give advices that allowed me to learn and I continue to learn again for PS, Lr, Light, composition etc…… I’ll switch certainly for Fuji XT-4 this year……..money is also a reason as I know the profile of the Z series and A7… as well…. 😊 again because of some photographer videos….. so I would recommend beginner to just follow right people, like me for landscape photography !! Funny after only 1 year and a half doing that as a hobby how I look the world differently, how I would only take photo when light is going up or down…..or in street in the middle of the day in summer in Italy or as mentioned by rick, the tricks that I see in movies and art of the director of photography……well a full exciting new life. I don’t have the income to go to workshops as you do….but well, now I might go in Danemark this year and studied the possibilities to flight to feroe…. But as mentioned earlier by Mads so many places out of the well known magical places where magic is present as well. So well, THANKS a lot for all of what you guys are sharing, it is really valuable!!! Cheers.

Totally agree. You can miss SO much if you're faffing around with a tripod.

I'm so glad you guys exposed the unspoken underbelly of photography footwear. So brave to show it for 40 min! Kidding of course. Cheers for these collaboration sessions, I'm fascinated and hang on every word. I particularly liked the 'what are you doing to improve your photography' question, a question that will never have a final answer. Thanks boys.

Behind on your vids Nigel so apologies...been out shooting a lot! For me the 2 things that hit home hard are firstly what you said about shooting photos you like yourself and if others do as well then that's a nice bonus. The other was what James said about losing your hobby when turning it into your job. For me I use photography as a way to escape the pressures of work so whilst I'd love to make some money from it I'd hate to have the pressure to turn out Videos (and Instareels - James went way up in my admiration for that!😂😂) you guys must feel. I think there is an opening for another f4 group now the other one have broken up😉

I like finding parallels between photography and music (although I’m useless at both). A wonderful guitar player, Jerry Donahue, said in a video that he picked up a bit here and a bit there from different guitarists and merged them with his own preferences (like double string bends) to create his own style. Books like ‘Zen Guitar’ will talk about process rather than outcome. And not losing instinct during the editing process (that’s Rob Reed saying how he’d got into the habit of watching the computer screen rather than listening while editing - a bit like editing by histogram rather than concentrating on the image itself). OK. Who’s going to ‘pinch the idea’ of making a video with a musician!!??

Love all of your work, and watch all the time. Disappointed that Mads thought post processing was so incredibly important. Most amateur photographers don’t have this as an important step, mostly I try and take good photos. Really appreciate your advise but thinking about how to make a photo better, later, is never a consideration for me when taking the photo. But apparently it is supposed to be.
