I'm 79 born 1944. I had a dolls house when I was around six - seven. It had paper made to look like roof tiles on the roof. The front was painted cream and had a painted rose bush around the front door. The door and window frames were metal with criss-crossed panes. It had a garage. My gran bought me little people to live in it. They were made of wool covered wire, with heavy lead feet so they'd stand up unaided. They were dressed in felt clothing. Yes, washing day was Mondays and we had a mangle which stood outside. We had a shallow stone sink - not a butlers sink which were a bit posher and it had a wooden draining board. Some women were lucky enough to have a gas boiler. We only had gas lighting. Our house was a two up two down terrace. Your house is based on a house that was slightly up market, so probably had electricity. Our bedrooms all had fireplaces. We used iron, irons heated up on the range or gas stove. Some housewives if they had electricity in their homes, had electric irons which were plugged into the light socket. We had a black iron gas stove. We just had brooms for sweeping. Some lucky ladies had a Ewbank which was wood, had a roller and was pushed around manually but they weren't very efficient on lino. We ironed on the kitchen table. If lucky enough to have an ironing board they were made of wood. No fridges, so perishable food was put in little wooden 'safes' with mesh fronts and fixed to the outside wall of the kitchen in the shade, but not used much in summer though! Fireguard around the fire and clothes aired on it. We had a wooden clothes horse too. No sliced bread, so breadboard with matching bread knife always on the table, along with a brown teapot and cut glass sugar bowl. Wicker shopping baskets. No fitted carpets. Rag rugs in front of the fire. Fancy lace curtains were essential. No plastic. Galvanised buckets. Front step scrubbed and done with whitening powder every week. And where I lived there were no bathrooms, so a big galvanised bath hung on the back wall of every house. Hope that helps :)

This is how it happens. You get one dollhouse, think you are done, and suddenly you have several houses, none of which will ever be truly "finished" because you always find things to add. It's the best hobby ever! Your new house is lovely, congratulations on your purchase and I am excited to see what you do with it.

For the fascia timbers on that house, you can get a bundle of coffee stirring sticks that are perfect mini planks of wood that are easy to snip to size! I like that dollshouse! We apparently still had an Anderson shelter here when my parents first moved here. I love repair projects 😁 One thing I will say is that my house was built in 1938 and the white and black checker tiles were all over the place! So 1930s-1950s is my guess 😉 I think the name is "The Leas" which is a house name I have seen before!

There is a book and dvd on a TV series about The 1940's house which tells you everything a 1940's house would have had. And it tells you about rationing, the Anderson shelter and about growing your own veg. The book and dvd would be a great help to you both. Can't wait to see the videos you make on your new 1940's house. Thank you so much for purchasing your new project. Already the house is starting to be more cheerful with the love you are giving it x

I know you said your intentions was to redo the exterior of the house with new paper, but it might be more neat, given how the poor house has been treated by time, to re-shingle the roof with popsicle sticks. you could even strengthen the doors of the house by gluing popsicle sticks and coffee stirrers over the existing stone and repainting it to match the original paper. so excited to see what you decide to do with it though!

An exciting project a war time house. My favorite style of decorating is the 1940s farm houses here in the States. My mother grew up in the 1940s. A fun and challenging project! The fireplace may never have had a mantle. Some didn’t starting in the 1940’s and after - the modern style, right? Dad had to get clever with ours, creating wooden pieces that could be temporarily pressed between the bricks, so we would have a place to hang the stockings at Christmas. 🙂

If you Google '1940s dollshouse UK' you will see a lot of houses very similar to yours, brick paper and stone paper included. I think so much of the house made from cardboard speaks to rationing when wood was needed for the war effort. So I think you're off to a good start. I build dollhouses almost exclusively from cardboard and foam board, including furniture. So I am really looking forward to watching this project. Its definitely 1/12 scale

I would suggest putting thin wood inside and outside to restore it and make it stronger. You have all that awesome stuff to remake that. Also in the 50's we had bathrooms built on the back porches doing away with outhouses. My grandmother used a chamber pot on her side of the bed. The had the old washing machines with the 2 rollers you pushed the material through with the big side button you could hit when your hand got pulled into it. I still have a ring mark where my hand was pulled in to my knuckles before I could hit it to open it up. 🙃 prior to that was we had wash board's in a big metal tub outside. Prior to that they were boiled in a cauldron over a fire and prior to that we washed our clothes in creeks using stones to clean the leather. We're Natives in our territory first contact. We took the French hueganauts in in 1525, 50 year's we lived peaceably together because they didn't try to steal our land. 50 year's later we took in the Lost Colony in our village of Tandequemuc in Merry Hill NC. They weren't lost. Like all other races they took a spouse from our people and assimilated into us.... we're Iroquois.

It'd be nice to see that house on a larger base board with an external washing line & a garden. Food for thought?

A very inspiring not-so blank slate! I know it will be hours and hours of fun, reasearch and a truly noble cause to lovingly restore and fill it! I'm amazed at the little details - even the floor trim! I love the wall paper with the little feathery plume flowers, and the childrens paper is an almost exact match stylistically to what was in the childrens room in my Grandmothers house - last updated (until it changed hands) in the 30s and 40s. Pinks, golds, maroons, browns, and sage greens were the palete of choice for living rooms of the period and scenic wall papers, and pink/black and pastel yellow/black tiles and the checker-block floors in the kitchens and bathrooms.

I am so pleased you have saved this little house. Don't forget most houses had a picture rail in every room and also paper stripes of design on top of the wallpaper. Can't think what you call it. As to the rail I think I can hear my mum talking about a dado rail? going around the room. When I was young I had lino in my bedroom and a mat to step on beside the bed. When you said wartime house I thought you would have to make gas masks and don't forget the boxes people had to wear with them in. Always brown paper covered. I don't think they had stone cladding on the front of house at that time. Mums bungalow was built in 1937 and they had pebble dashed walls on the front and back. O this is going to be exciting I can see......

What a bargain!! Looking forward to seeing its metamorphosis. Think that spare bit of wood that came with it might be from under the roof? Nice that the house has a name. Great project.

I love this house, it was built with love and a small child once adored this little house, I think it’s designed as a later 30’s house and most likely build in the 40’s
