    I really like how you put this video together. It is very well made and I enjoyed it pretty much. But: You two are really biased towards the Tesla as you keep constantly bashing the Leaf. If something goes well for the Tesla it's by design but with the Nissan it's always luck? I think Nissan doesn't get enough credit for the fact that they're the best traditional car manufacturer when it comes to electric vehicles. Especially this current version shows that a well made compact EV doesn't have to look weird or cost much to be very good.

    I've come to notice, on my leaf, that the e-pedal uses a lot of the friction brake to brake consistently. I opted to not using the e-pedal mode and just using the b mode instead of the d mode and play with the brake pedal for maximum re-gen. I use to see a bunch a brake dust with e-pedal mode. I rarely see it now.

    Great entertaining video -- enjoyed! But leads to a misleading conclusion. They assume that by charging each car to 236 miles of range and comparing their range at the end of the drive they will be able to determine which car is more efficient. When the range totals are nearly the same at the end of the trip they conclude that each car provides the same efficiency. However, this is a flawed way of comparing efficiencies because using range estimate to determine efficiency is circular. The computer in each car derives the range estimate of each car by estimating the efficiency of the car (based on a number of factors) and multiplying that by the energy left in the battery ( mi/kWh * kWh = mi). For that reason you cannot use the comparison of the estimated ranges of each vehicle as a way of comparing their efficiencies because the estimated range takes into account the assumed efficiency of each vehicle. All they are really doing in this video is comparing the difference of how each vehicle estimates range on a hilly drive. Which is useful to know as range estimate is based on the assumption of driving on flat ground. If you really want to compare the efficiencies of each car based on this drive you have to use the percent of battery left in each car as compared to each cars total battery size, and use that to determine how much energy each car used on the drive. Based on what they said in this video the model 3 used 37 kWh and the Leaf used 44 kWh. Making the model 3 more efficient, which is what is expected based on the EPA ratings of each car. For highway driving (which is what most of their drive was) the Leaf has an EPA MPGe rating of 94, while the Model 3 has a rating of 112. Meaning the model 3 is rated to be 16% more efficient at highway driving. On their drive the model 3 used 7 less kWh of energy than the Leaf, meaning it was 16% more efficient. So really what you can conclude based on their test is that the model 3 is 16% more efficient at highway driving, which is exactly what you would expect based on the EPA ratings of each vehicle.

    MPGe blows. Only the govt could labor mightily and come up with such a loser. Its like if they came out with a new coin today that was 1/5 of a penny. Id rather have the screen in my Volt be blank than have MPGe. And Id LOVE to have that Tesla consumption graph. But not enough to put up with EVERY function being ONLY via the display. When GM calculates gas MPG (if I happen to use gas) it includes the miles on electricity in the calculation for mpG, so it gives some bizarre number, like 220 MPG, thats pretty much as useless as MPGe. As if electricity didnt cost anything and didnt have to be injected into the car somehow (time cost). And this last week they installed an update that REMOVED my daily e/g breakdown graph. Thanks GM, did Ford give you the idea to help me like that?

    I love that this channel is open to changes, and not just dismissive of EVs. I honestly don't understand why more people aren't excited about what EVs can do. Giving up loud engine sounds for insane acceleration seems like trading fake exhilleration for real exhilleration, and comparing performance EVs to performance cars, they are way cheaper. While EVs might be more expensive up front, the truth is that even right now today, the cost to own over a 79 month period for a moderately priced EV is still much cheaper than an affordable ICE vehicle. The average US price for a new car is $36,000 and 24 MPG average. The equivalent budget for price parity on an EV including cost of ownership over a 79 month period is $46,000 without any tax incentives!

    Thanks for the video guys. I have mixed feedback on this. The bottom line is yes, if one is looking at a full battery electric vehicle, then go with the biggest battery your budget will allow, even though the majority of the typical daily driving is well covered by any BEV with a 35kWh pack size or higher. Yes for longer trips, a bigger battery pack is gold. However, with that goes increased cost. And in your comparison, for the money spent on each vehicle, I would say the Leaf did pretty good against the Model 3. Yes they are both from the ground up BEVs with of course many differences. Those differences are reflected in the pricing. The Tesla costs more and you should get better performance out of it given what it is. For battery management, Tesla is king right now with what I think is the best BMS on the planet by far. No one in that sense can touch them. That being said, the Leaf and Model 3 tend to go after different markets. Nissan is not trying to compete with BMW, Mercedes, Audi and the like where Tesla is (it's a premium brand according to Elon!). Therefore the metrics for these markets are different and as such that is reflected in the design and offerings. Hence why the Leaf does not have a Frunk and looks more like a traditional ICE vehicle. That is on purpose from Nissan as they want to compete with the Toyota Corollas, Honda Civics, and the like - to get into more mainstream markets with a value-priced all-around good BEV. The Leaf does not have to be top in any category, but just be a decent all-around everyday car. Tesla is built on performance, style, design, technology and that is the type of owners they are targeting. And in your remarks about ProPilot and AutoPilot, remember that Nissan's system is based just on a single camera and single radar. Tesla as multiple cameras, radar and sensors so it should perform much much better. However, ProPilot is really really good for what it is and I don't get the "ponging" at all my 2018 Leaf SL 40kWH, and I've been driving it for almost a year now! I did a highway video of PP last fall and it performed admirably. So even though they in some cases may be similarly priced (Model 3 SR+ RWD with no other options vs. Leaf SV Plus or SL Plus), they still IMO go after different markets. And those markets are not to compete with one another, but to compete and displace ICEVs - as the end result it to put more Zero Emission Vehicles on the road and less tailpipes! While I appreciate the video and "testing", its safe to say that both vehicles performed very well with the more expensive ($10k+ more), more powerful, more heavy and with more battery - the Model 3 ending up with basically the same final range left as the Leaf. To me, I would say the Leaf came out on top as it has the smaller battery and passive thermal management! The take away here is that BEVs can perform very well in all situations and it is important for longer journeys to understand range and driving characteristics to a point, as well as charging infrastructures, etc. However, for the majority of use cases, people can just get in them and drive them. Come back to a home charger, plug in and the next day repeat without any worry. You can't refuel your ICEV at home! BEVs are becoming more mainstream for the simple fact that they in most circumstances can replace an ICEV and provide a better driving, maintenance and ownership experience. More manufacturers are cranking out and will provide even more choice year after year as this industry is rocketing up in scale. Tesla is not the only player anymore (remember Nissan came out with the Leaf before the Model S and the Leaf was targeted at a more mainstream market since day 1 - just technology pricing at that time made them very cost-prohibitive versus ICEV). We are still not at cost parity today, but hopefully should achieve that within my prediction of 5-7 years, but I really really hope it is sooner.

    Nice reply but you missed one point that bothered me in the "real world" test. The Leaf was handicapped in it's range test as they intentionally did not activate the ECO mode. If we are testing the range performance then both cars should have used it's best technology to create best range. If the test was performance in a drag race, then both cars should be run in the high performance mode. The jack-rabbit start in the video was no surprise Tesla with the more powerful drive train won but I don't drive that way so don't need a drag racing car. Therefore we really don't know what the Leaf would have ended up with in range remaining. I decided to buy the standard 2019 Leaf SL as my second car which is primarily used for short about town errands. I didn't need the range greater than 150 miles as my longest one way trip is only 60 miles and I have a free DC charging station at the destination if I need to recharge. Nissan Leaf has FREE DC charging. For touring, I have a Honda Accord Hybrid Touring car that can get 700 miles on a tank of gas. It's been cross country twice and a great touring car. The cost of the Leaf SL was considerably less than the Model 3 and after I decided I just don't need that range, the money saved was considerable. One day I may replace the Honda Hybrid with a Tesla if they are still in business, but I will see what all EV's offer then in a couple years. I really want much faster charging with traveling for long multi day trips. Tesla is making progress in that direction that I don't see from other car companies. If I only had one car, the Tesla long range model would be it. The proper tool for the job.

    While they may be similar right now, my guess is that the Leaf battery will show serious range loss after a couple years. The battery life in my Leaf was awful and I don't live in a hot part of the country (OR.) I didn't do much fast charging either. In six years I lost very close to 30% of my range. On the other hand, there are bunches of original 2012 Model S's out there with 90% range still.

    Lane change is no longer available without FSD (Full Self Driving) being purchased in addition to AP (Autopilot). A few months ago Tesla stopped offering EAP (Enhanced Autopilot), which DOES offer lane change and summon capabilities. Your Model 3 has temp tags so is new and likely has only AP and not EAP. To better differentiate things, those with EAP kept their features because EAP was a higher price than AP is offered for now. As a result, they moved the key features like auto lane change, NoAP (Nav on Autopilot) and summon (moving the car with no one in it using the phone app) into the FSD set of features.

    We have a BMW i3 in the family and as a tech guy, let me give you a couple of tips... #1: To best measure efficiency, forget the often inaccurate range meters. Instead, reset your trip computer before the start and just compare the Wh/mile figure. #2: To get Autopilot to change lanes: Settings -> Controls -> Autopilot -> Automatic Lane Change -> ON (it might have been moved in the recent software update, but the setting definitely exists) #3: As much as some people keep saying that all electric cars are the same, I recommend watching this video (a teardown of BMW i3 vs Chevy Bolt vs Tesla Model 3 - shows how far ahead Tesla is with electronics design): kzread.info/dash/bejne/opupmM-ke73dfso.html Thanks for these videos though. As a Leaf driver, I can tell you that the Leaf's guessometer is very very conservative. I can't tell you how often I set a route and the Leaf starts screaming "you may not reach destination" but I make it with 20 miles to spare. The Leaf is also actually a slightly bigger car in the cabin than the Model 3 and it stands much taller, offering better visibility. The Tesla wins on all other regards, but you pay a price for it. If you commute 130 miles/ 200km a day everyday, the Tesla is the better choice, but perhaps an even better choice would be to move or find a job closer to home, because no amount of savings on gas can make up your lost time. If you only commute 65 miles/100km a day, and do the occasional road trip, the 40Kwh Leaf is the way to go. If you are a salesman driving all over the place, an electric car is not for you. IMO in terms of utility vs. price, the Leaf is a utility vehicle while the Tesla is a toy. Might as well fork out some extra and buy yourself a Porsche or even a Ferrari. Tesla is creating a speculative demand by forcing drivers to forfeit both their time and money, adapting their life to the vehicle rather than adapting the vehicle to their lives. As for Autopilot, it's a death trap, it promotes driver complacency. Soon, accident rates will rise and regulation is going to become tough.

Apparently you're one of the people who sit in the left lane blocking faster traffic, who then have to go to the right lane to go around you which is dangerous for everyone. I'll check for you reply when I wake up from my nap.

    On some highways in some states, the left lane is a passing lane by law, there are signs and it's enforced. But that's the exception and not the rule.

  • @Jaymac720

    @Jaymac720

    The thing is, in most areas with highways, there’s a lot of traffic so you need to use every lane. People then apply that thinking to every form of highway driving. On i10 in New Orleans, no lane is ever clear. If people kept out of the left lane, traffic would back up really quick and then you’d need to use the left lane either way

  • @stellarrat

    Unfortunately, I don't think the police in the US enforce the left lane rules much. It is in the driver's manual in most or all states here. I will say that our traffic jams would probably be worse if no one used the left in some supercrowded cities though. You'd effectively lose 25-50% of your road capacity.

    The other responses are correct, on the Tesla, whether you choose to show remaining range as a percentage or as miles, you are looking at the same information. The remaining miles is a simple math calculation based on the percentage. Now, whether you will actually get those number of miles is based on your driving habits, but that is somewhat mitigated by regenerative braking. Unless you are driving like a fool, the mileage number will be close to reality.

If you are optimizing both vehicles, it should be best configuration. You have decided to compare apples to oranges. Other than that, keeping the two together the whole trip kept speeds and acceleration pretty much identical. Overall great job.
