    They should race that new mustang against a kid in a 5000 dollar Civic EG hatch with an Ebay turbo. Those early big block GT's were bricks. Ford could never run with Chrysler and Chevy on the street.

    There's no actual head to head race, so here you go: '67 = 15.24 sec. 92 mph '20 = 11.49 sec 130 mph Edit: For my metric friends, thanks to the commenter Niven Vojkovic: 92mph = 148kph 130mph = 209kph Thanks Niven 👍

    The 2020 did 11 3 on a second run. The 67 was babied down through strip. They need to dyno the 67 GT500.

    The owner of the ‘67 was babying the car. He didn’t launch at full throttle and I’m not sure he even floored it until he was well underway. Yes the new one is much faster but the old one could have done better.

    Remember them Chrysler products 383 & above. With them big gas gushing thermoquads. Lots was in hot police cars of 70s & 80s. About 3 seconds of a sudden fuel intake bog then they would kick in & take off. Fast but brakes wasn't advanced enough. Brake systems today is like daylight & dark compared to them days.

    Muscle cars, especially built for track, don't need fancy radios or cruise control. Also, driving on the track all them buttons on the wheel and the screen are just distractions you don't need. Most people are not Andrettis.

    Im a mechanic who learned in the 60s the cars look better in the 60s 70s but internally and design wise there much better today they dont look as good today but they handle stop n start better today

    It's not a process to do a burnout. It's exactly the opposite. It's launching the car doing a burnout it counterproductive to going fast. If you're spinning you ain't winnin.

    I just bought a 2020 Mustang GT and it takes a little practice to master the linelock. The most important step: Turn off traction control! That step is never mentioned in the prompts. When you fail, the prompt says refer to manual. And there's absolutely nothing mentioned about it in the manual.

    If I had a choice between a new Mustang or a fully rebuilt Stang from 67 thru 69, I'd take the old one 100 out of 100. The old Stangs just look so much better than the ones of today.. To each his own I guess.. Nothing beats the original!!

    DerStrohmann i agree where you are comin from, havin tuned engines by ear for many years. But new cars are alot easier to fix. Any idiot can read a code and change a sensor. Not many can adjust points

    That old motor can make a ton of power. A lil rebuild and blower amd it can out that old gt500 infront the new one easy. Its way lighter. The new one weighs 4200 lbs

    I had a '68 fastback, built a 360 from a '75 pickup and stuffed in it. Ran ¼ mile in 10.63 at 138 mph at Bristol. It wasn't a super hot engine, but it was fun.

    Back in the 70's I bought a used Shelby Mustang 350 convertible. Most fun thing I ever had. Cruising speed was 100 mph and I took the jug handles on and off the freeway at 60. Drove it winter and summer for 4 years and lived to tell. Loved that car!

    The new mustang is absolutely an incredible car. Safe, efficient, comfortable, driver oriented, etc. The 1967, though. That car has a soul. Its insanely honest in its bare bones mechanicalness. For me, the 67 is the winner. Its timeless.

    When I was a kid, three different neighbors had Shelbys. one a 1966 GT350, the other was a 69 GT350 convertible, and the last had a dark green 1970 GT500KR. I dreamed to one day own one myself, but as I grew older the price just kept creeping up, now the cars are way up there I'll never own one. Good on the ones who can.

    Divine Wrath One is subjective as many people find new cars like the Ferrari and Aston models to look better than anything else made in the last 30 years. The second is something that tends to appeal to those who want to be seen rather than enjoy a great drive. I will take better performance over sound any day. A mid range Honda is faster than a muscle car from the 1960s with all its sound and looks. My 911S has a great sound and super car performance by the standards of a decade ago. It’s safer and more comfortable than old muscle cars not to mention being a great everyday car that you can track. Only an insane person would drive an old muscle car in the winter. It’s why that generation dove these only on sunny summer days.

    I clicked on it to see the 2 cars go head to head but given I’m a Mustang - Shelby fan, I ain’t even mad they didn’t. If I had the sort of money to buy either, I would in a heartbeat. But, the 1967 model has always been and will always be, my dream car.

    That launch control on the new cobra seems sort of like cheating... when I was involved in drag racing (1970’s), launching well was most of the job. It was a skill to be proud of. Now the computer does all the work. No finesse from the driver.

    true. the driver pretty much admits he doesn't especially know what he's doing, and the guy instructing him basically says " just keep the gas pedal firmly to the floor and release the brake at the light". So basically your grandmother could get a good launch, as all of the skills required for drag racing are pretty much taken out of the equation.

    My friend drove me to school in his dads 67. In 1967. Coolest ever. White with close together running lights. His dad parked in a hospital parking lot 2 weeks later, and it was stolen. Like gone in 60 seconds I tell you !!!

    My 67 Gt 500 was turning 12.86 in 67. It had a 4.11 rear dealer installed Detroit auto locker. Put some wider tires on it and the times would have gone down. The 67 was way bigger in the cool factor relative to the new Mustang. The inboard headlites and mag wheels added options were a must.

    Yep, I had one as well in early 70's. Raced it with my 67 coupe (289) mustang and beat the Shelby so bad, the kid traded me for the 67 coupe, after I offered him $200 in cash as an incentive:-) I figured it worked to about $1100 cash and trade in 1973 with 40K original miles. After some work on the clutch, shifter and carbs, we raced again against my 67 coupe (which ran the 1/4 in 12.9 at Orange County Racetrack) and he only beat me by one car length, and that was all due to traction. My 67 coupe was like a cat, would literally jump off the line, the Shelby was tricky due to all that torque and not big enough or good enough tires. That 67 Shelby to this day was one of my favorite cars, loved working on those dual carbs and that massive motor. Plus the roll bar, aluminum dash and Shelby trimmings were pretty cool.

    The line lock we had in our 04 mustang was just hit a button on the shifter and mash the brake pedal and it was engaged. It just shut a valve in the front brake lines so that they would stay on.

    The '67 should be in the low 14's at the least. I know you don't wanna go too hard on a car that old and valuable but even though it's an automatic you still have to manually shift it if you want any kind of performance. Don't just put it in drive and go.

    I was wondering if they ran the 67 on high octane gas. I remember when my dad would sometimes put “Ethyl High Test” in his car. It sounded different and definitely ran stronger. If the 67 was running regular gas it was racing with 2 cylinders tied behind its differential.

There's still limits, and there's still a fine line between perfectly executing a corner vs oversteering/understeering into the wall. Sure, you can take the corner holding a lot more speed in the new one than the old one, but to go as FAST as you possibly can around a corner and nearing the limit of the car, there's still a lot of skill to be involved. The driver element is there. Take off your rose tinted glasses and be more objective instead of basing your entire statement on opinion.

    Way to go Ford. Found a way to make a line lock that's confusing and can be dangerous. Here's what I'd do, AND IT'S FOOLPROOF. Put a cut-off solenoid in the front brake lines to stop fluid flow when the solenoid is on. Put the switch for it on the shifter handle and put an armored enable switch inside the console. Using it is as simple as this. 1) Open the console and enable the system by turning the armored switch on, sending power to the line lock solenoid. (Ground for the solenoid is enabled with the shifter handle switch.) 2) Pull up to the box and put the brakes on hard! 3) While the brakes are on, enable the solenoid and take your foot off the brake: Front brakes will stay on. Do your burnout. 4) Go to the line and repeat the front brakes locking procedure. 5) When the light goes green, release the solenoid switch as you floor the accelerator pedal.

    I had to comment on this, I had an argument with someone not too long ago, I have a 1996 Corvette, its a 350 LT1 auto, and its not stock, but it isn't over built either with 3.23 gears. It doesn't run stoplight to stoplight it does everything well. He has a 1970 Chevelle 4 speed with a built 454 and gears and I know without a doubt i can clean his clock in the 1/4 mile and in any top speed race. He won't ever race because deep down he knows it too. He still wants to live in the fantasy land that 600 horsepower in an old tired muscle car is the legacy of his youth when today's technology and refinement would kick his ass in a car making half that horsepower. Some people don't want to let go and thats fine. I get it, i love the old muscle cars like everyone else, Im just not naive enough to let that love of the past affect reality.

    The guy says of the '67: "The GT500 was a purpose-built drag car and the GT350 was much more of a road-going car". Actually they were basically an identical car, one had a small block and one had the big block. Naturally the lighter small block engine made the 350 handle better but other than that they were identical.

    After the first run when the guy wasn't around I would have bumped the launch RPM to 2000-2500.

    Derek Armstrong - was thinking the same thing. I think they set launch rpm really low based on their assessment of the drivers experience and because the track likely was torn up by so many runs with street tires. A 15 second car with hard street tires tears up a track surface worse than a 13000 HP funny car! I have seen other videos (on a prepped track) where the launch RPM was maxed out at 3200 and the car just hooked and booked. Best I have seen so far for a stock car is 10.66.

    my stock 89 turbo Grand Prix (3.1) ran 13.9 on pump gas. the 1320 times of the original GT500 that i have just witnessed make me reconsider my childhood ambitions.

    Technology making an inexperienced driver capable on a track. I wonder if a burn-out is even possible without setting the menu, or if the technology blocks it when not in its designated track mode/burn out settings? Traction control might not allow it? It would be interesting to see a qualified driver behind that wheel.

    I'm an automotive technician at a ford dealership. The engineer WAS over complicating things only because of how many steps in setting up launch control. The burnout can be done by anyone who knows how to do it, just disable traction control with the press of a button. The launch control is a track app that helps drivers that dont know anything about racing launch the car correctly. Any driver with experience wouldn't need to use the feature. Theres a lot of technology stuffed into these cars and it really is a lot of fun to play with, especially the active exhaust 👌 loud when you want it loud and fairly quiet when you want it quiet and all of these apps and features are available on the regular mustang GT since 2019.

    that's why it is called FORD( Forget Our Research Department) they should have burn out,and quarter mile option,and computer should apply all those option automatically,that would be the option on 2022,so they sell more!

    I’ve got an ‘11 shelby, and a ‘67 GTO convertible. The shelby is a great every day. Rides nice, stopes great, fast, comfortable….. The Goat is semi comfortable, doesn’t stop or steer nearly as well, is moderately fast. But it sounds so much better and is good for turning heads and starting conversations. I’ll take the old stuff any day….so much prettier and more class

    @Robert B since the stats of the engine is 355 hp at 5400 rpm I'm gonna go ahead and say your wrong on this one. It's an auto and was short shifting badly.

    @ triplestangman 355 GROSS HP Which means it was measured without an air filter,, headers, accessories, or even a water pump and was run on the stand just long enough before it seized. How realistic do you think that is?

    The greatest thing about those old cars, you could literally watch the gas gauge needle move down. I owned a 68 Caddy, with a 472. It went real good, but if you floored you could waste 5 gallons in 20 miles. I'm sure if you got 5-6 mpg with the Mustang you were pretty happy.

    When the price of premium fuel drops to fifty cents a gallon I'll sale my 2014 GT and go back to a big block car. Just an old retired boomer who has been their and done that and now too lazy to tinker with the old stuff. Altough I do regert selling those two Gen1 Corvettes, a 56 & 58, and that 68 Camaro along with the 71 Nova. Oh, I forgot to mention the 88 5.0 Mustang coupe.

    The 67 GT 500 dual 4bbl carb set up was only on the 427 engine, not the 428 which was available in 68. The 335 hp rating was a dumbing down of the horse power numbers to aid in the sale of these cars. By 67 the insurance industry was putting high premiums on performance cars based on horsepower figures. Actual output was north of 400hp. The 67 GT is hurt by running the old school size tires. Tires that narrow can't hook up like the tires on the new GT500. I grew up riding in a 67 GT500 with the 427 dual Holley 4V carb set up. It would smoke the tires at 65 mpg in a 3rd to 4th shift. I ran a performance shop for years and sold the CSX 4000 series of Shelby Cobras. My Cobra was a 427 S/C aluminum Shelby FE side oiler. Dyno numbers were 525 hp 535 tq. Even running the widest Goodyear tire that fit in the rear, only a careful application of the throttle would not spin the tires. The 67 GT500 is a brute and fun to drive, the 427S/C is a monster. The new generation of hot cars are fun but not like the old school ones that you drove. The new ones you are mostly just along for the ride as computers and sensors do the real controlling.

    @@nikki5399 thank you. I thought I had read that as trivia somewhere. Still, only like 2000 GT500's were made in 67, so a driver in that condition, I really don't think I would scoff. I am willing to bet that auto 67 is in better shape than his 67
