I didn't know this whole breadtube/lefttube thing was so serious to people. I'd heard the reference, but I thought it was like a loose way of referring to people are left leaning to far left who contribute to that conversation. The idea that it is a thing that can be gatekept is pretty weird to me. It kind of reminds me of the way the audiences of many popular atheist youtubers became weird and toxic despite the creator repeating calling them out and telling them to stop it. I think that followers and adherents ultimately end up defining narratives, rather than people who actually put ideas out into the world.

@@mr.pavone9719 I don't think that's true at all. Biden becoming president was just 1 successful staving off of one kind of crazy that's causing real harm today. I'm not at all surprised to see him breaking promises and failing to address the most important issues with any real success. There are few things that definite wins, but mostly things are still stalled out. More importantly, he and the rest of the party are completely failing on the most important work of unpacking everything that happened under the Trump administration. They still see him with the same dismissive disdain that lost them the 2016 election. Right now I think it's straight up likely that he will be elected for another term in 2024. I see him making moves to help ensure he can actualy succeed in overturning the result, but right now, I don't think he's even gonna need that. Biden and the Dems have done nothing to convince the 73 million people who turned out for Trump that they made the wrong choice. Worse, they haven't done what they need to do to convince the 10s of millions of moderate and even right leaning voters, who didn't actually vote _for_ Biden, but rather, _against_ Trump; that they made the correct choice. Oh BTW, I voted Gore, Kerry, Obama, Obama, Clinton, Biden. I kinda want them to succeed. I just don't think they will.

The problem with not defining a group; however becomes a problem when people come in and start to subvert the group using the name. This has been a problem with subcultures, groups and movements throughout time. Because generally the people who start something know exactly what they were wanting to achieve and what they wanted to say. If you are indeed a leftist; that means something, it's shouldn't be open to random interpretation, or eventually being a leftist won't mean anything because you'll have dozens of people claiming to be leftist often with 180 degree ideologies, and completely different goals. This is very evident when you look at what we now consider the "right".

It’s also worth mentioning that Breadtube and Lefttube weren’t always considered the same group. Breadtube was the click of Contra/PhilTube/Hbomb/Lindsay et al, and they were defined as such due to the subreddit, which was created explicitly by those channel’s fans who all had overlap. Lefttube was a larger category meant to encompass them and also anyone making leftist/left-wing content on YT. But since both categories were simultaneously ill-defined, and also subject to intense gatekeeping, the entire fan base become one big cluster that devolved pretty quickly.

I honestly think the concept of breadtube is really useful for those who wish to find that kind of content but (as everyone points out) the audience kind of ruined that. most of the problems that come with the “breadtube” label are created by the audience itself and their standards and biases. so when people ask why breadtube is so white or why certain creators are considered breadtube and others aren’t, the creators don’t make those choices, the audience does. so its the audiences viewing habits and biases that have to change, its not the creators fault y’all are conditioned to think somethings are better than others.

Theres the algorithms, theres the inherent biases of viewers, theres the lack of collaboration with people who are ostensibly allies who are outside of friend groups. And this doesnt mean that all leftists need to promote all other leftists all the time, but it does mean that leftists with huge audiences have a lot of power when it comes to who they recommend. Like just look at the massive jump in follower counts for smaller leftist content creators after Noah's video. If leftism is something we care about then we should definitely be platforming other leftists, and not just leftists who agree with us, but the broad spectrum of the conversation, which will make us stronger as a movement. While consumption of leftist content is primarily a form of entertainment, if we want to pretend we are educators and activists we need to like doo that work. Which is bringing people to the table. Which is the idea of the Breaking Bread video I think. Bringing people to the table. The more people at the table, the better the potluck is gonna be. WRT what you said about hbomb and contra being effective against the anti-sjw types, I remember hbomb talking about that first video on Davis aurini in a Patreon post and how he never intended to take down aurini or his pals, the whole point of the video was just pointing out how deeply, deeply lame aurini is. All of these weird quirks and details across his videos that collectively brought attention to what a sad loser he was. And by the time that video picked up steam, people were distancing themselves from aurini because the whole vibe of that space was that everyone thought they were Very Cool Alpha Males, and Harris so thoroughly and easily destroyed that illusion in one silly video. I think the skill that hbomb and contra have specifically is highlighting the farce of the whole thing, and that goes a long way in getting young people to drop something shitty

Imo, the term "bread-tube" has good heuristic value. Fiq talked about this in his "Breaking Bread" video about the rabbit holes or silos that youtube tends to use to lump creators together for the almighty algorithm. The positive side is that if one goes down the rabbit hole far enough, you'll likely find the little side-pockets where some really excellent work is being done by smaller creators who are adjacent enough to the content for the algorithm to recommend them. The downside is that no one community is a monolith and there's plenty of in-fighting to go around in leftist spheres (see T1J's comment about leftists vs liberals and gatekeeping). As a result you can equally miss out on excellent content because it gets partitioned off into a completely different silo. I think it's important that the audience remembers to think critically for themselves about the content they consume rather than just mindlessly watching the videos. That's how the right-wing channels picked up steam in the first place - they didn't encourage people to think for themselves. I personally don't care much at all for the "debate-bro" portion of leftist youtube. I understand the purpose they serve, but it's not my thing. I don't really have a great ending point for this and my adhd brain is kinda running out of steam here haha. Anyway, just my $.02.

I really liked your video. I like how you touched on the gatekeeping/purity testing that's been happening. It's really sad that so many people who share mostly the same views, spend so much time making content worrying about the differences. I don't know if they've just noticed that infighting brings more views, or if it's because of jealousy of creators that have larger platforms. It could even be that they don't feel like they can change the minds of right leaning people. Whatever it is, I'm glad you've recognized it and don't take part in it.

The circular firing squads over purity of ideas is something I have always found most frustrating with a lot of leftist discourse. I think a big issue that arises with I think early leftist stuff and this need to be read-up on literature is it kidn of ended up with the academic one-upmanship that I kind of hate in university work and also seems to value the perfect over the good there.

There's no point in trying to decry labels, that's generally what happens when people begin to see a pattern and try to categorize it. Most of the names of groups and movements we know from history where many times not names that the people in those movements gave themselves, but later became obvious to people looking back in retrospect, or those with an affinity for the things those people were doing; they saw a connection and they simply gave it a name. It's not a negative thing, and it can help people looking for your brand of content find you.

As a person who didn't really know there was a "breadtube" I think what made me always lump certain creators with other leftists, even if they didn't make specifically leftist obvious political content, was that when they made video essays, they'd always apply the most evolved academic lens without prompting. They'd analyze pop culture and apply a lens of race, feminist theory, gender theory, social awarenesses and considerations, modern mental health understandings, modern science without irony or sarcasm or without being told to do so. It was just part of their well-researched points or cleverly inserted jokes. Not that they'd always hit the mark for everything. Just that like... they acknowledged human experiences beyond their own as valid and I guess that means they're leftist in our currest hellscape of politics lol

I think what's sad about this whole conversation is, at least in my experience, you and kat blaque were really the early origins of leftist youtube. I had been watching both of you for years before the others showed up. In fact, it was because you mirrored one of Natalie's original videos that I even found her. The thing is though, I think FD is right in saying that youtube had an audience curated mostly for white people who were dealing with altright/nazi talking points because of how they changed which videos got promoted. And I still think it's a good thing that people like contrapoints came to the forefront even if it wasn't fair or wasn't a topic that underprivileged groups were really interested in engaging with (rightly so). Taking a step back, it seems insane that collectively we all were debating against literal nazi talking points but they were gaining power and influence. Unfortunately, I personally think it's too late anyway. The damage is done. We debated nazi talking points, giving them the credit to be ideas that were debatable instead of unacceptable. Now some of these talking points have been toned down and entered the mainstream real-life conversations. And that's not to say we shouldn't have debated them either. It just seems like an unfortunate case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. Obviously, breaking down the ideas and why they're wrong helped a lot of people flirting with those ideas. But also, for me personally and probably others like me who had to engage with those ideas with family and friends, contra and hbomb were people who broke through the gaslighting that happens from debating those people who "aren't doing anything wrong just discussing ideas". You have to remember this came to a head just before Trump and during his first years where there was a lot of shaming (sensitive snowflakes, playdoh and puppies, too emotional therefore not rational enough to even hold a conversation about race and crime or the reality of two genders, etc.) and gaslighting from the people with the most power. I mean I got written off as too emotional for many conversations about race or lgbt rights or feminism for calling out blatant (and I mean blatant) racism, homophobia, and sexism. And these people (not just people online but family), empowered by the trump culture, would openly try to mock and offend to get a rise out of me on purpose. Their channels gave people like me a sense of community and not being alone in this struggle. Anyways idk where I was really going with this but it's disappointing and I feel a great deal of frustration that those were the conversations we were having (even if they were necessary) instead of conversations around moving society forward in its multitude of problems and issues.

Honestly, I never understood what people meant by "breadtube", and I still don't. To me, "leftube" means popular and mostly English speaking KZread creators, making left leaning content pertaining to various media. Considering that most of these people are North American, their version of "leftist" isn't really the same as mine, because I'm Scandinavian. I will also add that I think some creators that might be considered by themselves or a few fans as being "lefttubers", might not make the cut in the eyes of the fans, because they haven't grown enough in popularity, or their content is too niche. I noticed many people mentioning some specific creators they think should be included in this category. Compared to the other more popular creators, I don't really watch them because their content focuses too much on very specific topics and viewpoints (often very niche) that aren't really relevant to me. Contrapoints' videos are appealing to everyone because of the way she structures them, in order to make people outside her perceived core demographic give her a chance. Some specific creators are perhaps too lecturing or repetitive for the audiences liking. I'm surprised you weren't included though, but perhaps you need more subscribers? (subscribe, guys!)

Thank you for pointing this out. This whole dissemination of "leftube" is so bizarre to me because it feels like this term was created by the audiences. And then creators got wise to this and it seemed like it just became this thing where people had to figure out what it is from the creator standpoint. Then people got mad they were left out and then it just created this situation where we have to hear so often about what is what and who is who. This is my problem with labels in general because it incentivizes people to think in narrow terms. I honestly wouldn't care if it was just fans bickering because I don't really care what those people think, but listening to the creators talk about this eternally I feel is just distracting from the discussions that matter and engaged audiences in a positive way.

I'd make a case it was a shared desire to remain empathetic in an atmosphere that really told you to do otherwise. The word seems to be a attempt to label a relationship dynamic between a group and a group of individuals the old para-social thing. To me it allowed me to confront a lot of my internal bias in ways I didn't thing were possible. Which as a result made me shift more "left" which I still think is just being more considerate/ empathetic in my real world interactions. Emotions were always a more ephemeral creature not really wanting to be fully enclosed. Maybe a word or two that described that malleable dynamic.

imo there seems to be a few different definitions of what lefttube even means? like there's: 1) the video essayists (often media/culture critics) that just happen to be left wing, regardless of if they do or don't make content about it (lindsay, jenny, big joel, etc) 2) the essayists that actually make leftist political content and analysis (contra, f.d., YOU lol, etc) and of those, there seems to be two more sub categories: a) the people who've been on "lefttube" for a long long time and are basically all friends with each other (philosophytube, hbomberguy, kat blaque, etc) b) the "next gen" lefties or the lefties who've just recently gotten more attention (khadija, yhara zayd, tee noir, etc) idk, i think the reason all these creators are lumped under the umbrella of "lefttube/breadtube" has more to do with the fact that their audiences overlap (ie, you watch contrapoints and start getting recommended lindsay ellis), whether or not their content could even be considered political/leftist. plus -- the clique ofc. it just seems like a very loose, nebulous network of video essayists who cultivate similar and overlapping viewers.

Digging around in my memory, I think the height of "breadtube" was the hbomb donkey kong stream. Absolutely massive number of viewers, AOC, whatever. After that, there was an explosion of channels trying to ride that train, and a slow deflation in viewer numbers across the board over the next few years. I vaguely remember watching one of Emerican Johnson's streams just after where he was talking about making this large tent leftist pipeline, kinda like how the alt-right has a bunch of "respectable" figures, then less respectable, and so on, and it seems to work for them. idk if he created the breadtube label, but he is an anarchist and liked The Conquest of Bread based name and definitely promoted it. The label kind of expanded from these smaller startup channels (or older small leftist channels) and fans of larger channels to just straight up include the larger channels themselves. The arguments about who gets to be in breadtube (as mediated by the subreddit) always seemed silly to me. For a long time it seemed to want to be "left-libs and anarchists, and also these big channels". No idea what it's like now.

Lefttube being these channels that often get recommended into each other which people grouped as "left-wing video essayists". In that way it also makes sense that people would associate it with specific friend groups since that pull is even stronger there. To a point I believe it even explains somewhat how channels with mostly apolitical content end up being viewed as "lefttube".

Fans who crossed over between contra hbomb and philosophytube made the subreddit breadtube. They crossed over because it's very obvious at the start of their popularity these youtubers primarily supported their friends, which only changed when people were starting to critique so many basically self styled breadtubers that they made the critiques of them having big channels because of financial, white privilege and then helping their friends make more money too, when they and their content originally very much advertised as more radical than they are to maintain an audience. Their fans, coming from the right wing, got memes to laugh at and a community without having to do much except change their politics on a superficial level, and the spaces devoted to these youtubers kept getting criticism until double downs, fake apologies and fan dogpiles silenced them. Now we get minor entirely youtuber pushed dramas about things that a small number of their critics offhandedly say which they make out is a big harassment campaign when it just isn't. In my mind breadtube is currently defined by leftists using right wing tactics against critics to get media attention and form a clique which no one criticises anymore.
