I'm not Japanese, but from what I can tell, padding actually does appear to be fairly normal under a wedding kimomo even in real weddings, under the nagajuban - at least in modern times. It's in every other real Japanese wedding video I watched before this one for research, and those were walkthroughs of real weddings at real Japanese shrines and what the brides ans grooms each do and wear. What I'm surprised by is the bright colors of this kimomo - all of the wedding kimonos i've seen were white, with an explanation that this was tradition, and I've found no mention that the use of white was an import from the West. She's also missing the large hat and proper hair style. Basically, she's missing all of the iconic parts that seem (to me, a foreigner doing research) to differenciate a bride from a normal, traditionally-dressed woman. Does anyone know if this a flaw on the demonstration's part, or is my understanding of a Japanese wedding so far wrong?

@@AlashiaTuol Pretty sure what you mentioned is the traditional garment for wedding in Shintoism, but nowadays since weddings are becoming increasingly secular wedding kimonos can also look like this - brightly coloured.

NephilaClavata Many families in modern Japan have a kamon they use consistently, but traditionally, kamon were exclusive to the aristocracy and wealthy merchants. After the Meiji restoration, many families that previously had no kamon or surname picked a kamon with their surname, iirc. Also, kamon aren't regulated like European-style family crests or coats of arms, so you can really use anything as a kamon as long as it works as a traditional kamon.

Thank you for that explanation. This happened at the wedding party of my wife (Japanese) and I (Canadian) when we returned to Japan to have a party for our Japanese relatives and friends. We married in Canada and her family was unable to travel so we had a second reception/party in Japan for her friends and relatives. That very polite gesture of welcoming the guests by sitting at the far end was lost on me then, but makes a lot of sense now.

Rachel, I just discovered you both today and the kimono you were wearing caught my attention...:) They couldn't have chosen a better kimono to set off your beautiful hair. You looked stunning in it. Jun also looked handsome in his...:) I watched your 'How we met' vid and I agree with Jun. You're definitely cute and adorable and you could have been a model. Your cheekbones are the stuff of dreams for make-up artists and I know I would be thrilled to do your makeup...:)

There really is something to be said for formality, tradition and elegance..

I know this was just a demonstration for what a Japanese wedding would be like but I was tearing up seeing you both get married (again haha). Both of you two are wonderful people and I hope the cat-children can join next time 😂

@@janesmith699 Lol Rachel is former USAF. It is a long running "joke" that the airforce are the physically weakest division of the forces and their PT standards are horrendously low. Thus, her having noodle arms is both funny and appropriate

Lol sounds like a great wedding.

This was an amazing Japanese wedding demonstration! At the point in the video when the mother put on the lipstick for Rachael to give her blessings, supposingly carrying all her childhood memories, tears just started streaming down my face nonstop until the end of the ceremony. Thank you guys for helping demonstrate the important feelings behind every step. ♥️♥️♥️

I'd say, do it where you've got the most family. It's really expensive to have family fly over! Or just hold a party twice ;)

Really? I felt she looked so strict and somehow slightly displeased the entire time I was scared in Rachel and Jun's place, bit of flashback to certain teachers I guess 😰 I guess I'm really bad at reading her facial expression 🙈

I now realize the significance of the bridal/matchmaker (where she is getting ready) part in Disney's Mulan so much better now. I had always wondered why they had specifically pointed out "lips of crimson" and now I know. Too cool ^-^

Actually, you may realize that Japanese, Chinese and Korean share many common culture, like red is the colour of luck, they all have the usage of "Kanji", which is "Hangul" in Korean and "Hanyu" in Chinese, besides that, the story of Mulan originated from the northern part of China, which is very close to the Japanese and Korean regions, thus sharing much of their cultures.

China and Japan do have a lot of similarities, but Japan is still Japan. If you are Chinese, can you share whether or not it was as significant in Mulan :0

What a beautiful couple you make. I love wedding kimono. In fact I first got interested in kimono collecting because of a wedding kimono I bought by accident. I needed some scrap silk fabric and bought an old kimono off Ebay. The pictures were bad and dark but I thought how bad could it be? It was cheap and that's what mattered. A huge box showed up on my doorstep and I thought what in the world is that? I opened it up and started pulling out silk and it kept coming and coming and coming. It was a snow white shiromuku. The thing is huge and weighs a ton! When you said your kimono was heavy I know exactly what you meant. Mine is so beautiful I didn't have the heart to cut it up. It was a treat to see what wedding kimono look like on. Thank you so much for sharing this.
