    The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, also known as Michibiki, is a four-satellite regional time transfer system and a satellite-based augmentation system developed by the Japanese government to enhance the United States-operated Global Positioning System in the Asia-Oceania regions, with a focus on Japan

  • @arjovenzia

    @arjovenzia

    Ya. Still based off the GPS, but with extra satellites to improve fidelity. But they swing vertically over Japan (and Australia), rather than around like most GPS. A good gps app will identify them. Redundancy is good. Glonass (Russia) and beidou (china) also all work. pretty sure India has a system to. N they are all transmit only, and easy to switch between them (SDR ftw). So there is a good probability there will be some sat nav, whatever shit hits whatever fan. Even if it takes a while. I remember in the early 90's doing govvie work with my Dad the GPS was a big, expensive machine. you'd start up the GPS an hour or so before you needed it, so it could get a decent lock, view the transit of a few sats to get a reasonable idea where it was before you could get a somewhat accurate location fix. Getting 3 or 4 was good. 1 or two was normal. Now I can get 30 from 5 nations in a handful of seconds from my pocket. Still was super useful tech, could do a field study of weeds n water tables, send the data off via Win 3.11 n a 14kbs modem, n they'd crunch it in a Unix machine in the city, n print off an A0 map at our bumpkin office with an ink pen plotter. I kinda miss the hall of that office, whole thing lined with cork, maps n pins. Was pretty neat. Thinking back tho... Was mostly done in wine cork. I think the social club did pretty well out of the 'cork budget'.

    Walking, an activity relatively rare in the US, actually started building some of the muscles you usually overlook - hence mass gain. Muscle is denser than fat, so even if you volumetrically remain similar, you will weigh more :)

    If you're pulling in a straight line, all of the force is between the two points, so the rebound if something breaks will go into the back of the vehicle. Where people die is when you use snatch blocks or are otherwise pulling around a corner because the member under tension will whip out in an arc as it's pulled around the corner. Thankfully and somewhat hilariously, they now sell purpose made bungee tow ropes for jerking vehicles when offroading. The main brand is Yankum Ropes.

    You should use a Yankum rope. It's a kinetic rope that builds up energy like a rubber band and then releases it to pull the vehicle out. Chains are too rigid and just snap.
