We Created a HALIBUT FEEDING FRENZY! | Fishing with Rod

We dropped a bag of chum down to 250 feet and waited for halibut to show up. One hour later, the feeding frenzy began! This is day two of my trip to Kyuquot in 2021.

    It's ok I am happy to be second choice behind Kitty lol! 😉 We are totally lucky to be fishing in that part of Vancouver Island. The pace of the halibut fishing up that way is almost always like that once the fish are drawn in. Definitely so spoiled! 😊 Thanks for checking it out Jody!

    So Canada is using a Slot Limit on halibut, with a Max Size to protect the breeding Females? That is a great idea. When I guided up at Yakutat, I'd offer a free trip to anyone that released a halibut bigger than 200 pounds. Pretty much any fish over 80 pounds is a female, from what the Bio's said. The fish you guys keep, the "chickens", melt in your mouth. You get plenty of fish when you get Ling and rockfish, too. Great video, enjoyed it very much! Thanks!

  • @FishingwithRod

    @FishingwithRod

    Yeah the slot size limit with the mandatory release for fish over a certain size has been in place for quite awhile now, at least ten years I think. This really works great. I think gone are the days when pulling in the biggest onto the dock mattered. This is the way to go for sustainability. 😊

    Hey Rod, what do you think about the North Side Jetty Breach at the mouth of the mouth of the North Fork, Frazier River. Pretty cool habitat restoration project ☝️

  • @FishingwithRod

    @FishingwithRod

    2 жыл бұрын

    Andrew, the restorations being done in the Fraser estuaries are some of the best news for salmon and other fish species in the Fraser and more organizations need to get behind it. I have been wanting to get out there to do a feature on this but the schedule just hasn’t worked out. Dave Scott has done a fantastic job on this. I’ve sat through quite a few presentations by him in recent conferences, and have had a better understanding on the different rearing periods by different salmon runs and how the estuaries play a critical role for them. If we can deliver significantly more and stronger juveniles into the ocean by restoring more habitat like this, then perhaps sustainability can once again be achieved.

    @@FishingwithRod wow, that sounds great. There’s a lot of potential just focusing on small small habitat modifications. Hopefully an opportunity presents itself for a segment on this project. I know steelhead love estuary habitat; it’s just something everyone needs to get behind. Early life history is key for these species. Thanks 👊🔥

    Thanks Gregory! I think it really depends on how tall you are. For shorter people with shorter arms like Kitty and me, the rod handle from the reel to the butt really needs to be a bit shorter for us. You can see that we are stretching out just a bit too much and straining the back. But yeah, hauling in fish like these from 250ft is some intensive labour for sure. 😉

    It was super fun. We are lucky to be out there with Dave each year. For this particular session, what I didn’t mention was that we were four hours before tide change so fishing wasn’t expected to be good for awhile, but all those bites came already two hours before tide change so we got all our fish way before peak bite time. If we had kept going, there’d just be one after another halibut on the lines at that spot.

    Do you drop bait bag with your downrigger or on your anchor chain

  • @FishingwithRod

    @FishingwithRod

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's dropped down from the downrigger so it is straight down below the boat. The anchor is usually fairly far away from the boat since we are at 250ft deep and there's current involved.
