Madhouse knew what they had done at the end of the episode. They dropped that massive sad bomb and then showed us the purple bottle, just knowing it would cheer us up and make us all laugh. This series can play with your emotions in such a masterful way.

I love how Frieren deals with memory. Stark's realization that he wasn't a coward is an iconic Frieren memory build-up and pay-off. All he recalls prior to this episode, is that he ran away during a demon attack on his home village... but that was the disjointed recollection of a guilt-ridden child, and his shame coloured his whole formative years. It took the trigger of talk of how birthdays were celebrated to the hamburg steak to bring back his memories of his brother... and that train of thought cause him to remember that it was his brother to saved his life, by telling him to run. Thus, this moment with Fern and Frieren is even more special to us all, interweaving Frieren's memory of Eisen with Stark's whole self-perception realigning with his realization that he wasn't a coward and how precious he was to his brother. Incredibly, this is not the end of this particular developmental arc, look forward to it! And at the height of the pathos, Mad House smacks us in the face with the joke to distract us from any embarrassment.

About the potion. Frieren bought it in the town during the first half of episode 3. It was shown briefly during that episode as well.

What a GREAT way to sum up the “Hero Party” a group of people who set out and helped others. (mortals? Idk if dwarves/elves fit in the etymology of the word “people”😅)

Of all the flashbacks of the Heroes' Party, this one holds a special place to my heart. Apart from the 1st episode, this is the only time that they interacted all together. Himmel telling about his dream to be a hero. Heiter responding that he's a real priest. Eisen laughing at them. The quick cuts showing flowers moving with the wind in a sunny field. The slow mo of them laughing while turning to Frieren. Her slowly gasping as she enjoys the moment. The scene perfectly evokes that feel of melancholic nostalgia. Only to be pulled back to the present, amidst a snow storm, where she's just dreaming of that bygone time with her friends. It simply hits different.

I finally understand the little girls statement on why they waited for Frieren. It wasn’t the just the sword they were looking after it was Himmel’s reputation. They couldn’t hire anyone without the Hero’s sword fake reveal.

Stark keeps comparing himself negatively to Himmel, but that he enters a town and has done something to help out like half a dozen people in just his first afternoon there is incredibly Himmel-like behavior.

About Himmel not being able to pull the Hero's sword, while it serves the purpose of showing that Himmel didn't need the sword of the Hero to become one, there is also a prophecy related to the sword about someone being able to pull it from the rock will save the world from a great calamity or something along those lines. So maybe the invasion of the demon king wasn't the catastrophe told by the prophecy and it is a possible foreshadow that the author left open-ended in case they wanted to go this route in the future of this story. Also it could be that the prophecy was already accomplished a long time ago, and everyone forgot about it apart from a few people and it became a legend. Or maybe it is a made-up story like you both said.

This might have been the first time I teared up watching episode 12, damn you, great reaction video, I agree you both are Cuddles and Carnage! This episode really encapsulates what I enjoy most in Frieren - the ability to tell many different stories related to the passage of time in a single 22-minute episode and tie them all together in a coherent and fulfilling way. We get the snowy journey to the Village of the Blade, with humor and flashbacks, the fight sequence over hero sword furthering the tie-ins between past and present, then the whole birthday gift drama, where we learn more about Stark and see him helping out the town, much like he did back at the town with the Dragon. We learn more about his childhood, hometown, family relations and see it all tie back into the birthday dinner again through the means of Frieren's past. To cover all that and not feel rushed, really needs great pacing and writing and it is really what makes the show unique to me.

I think this was the first instance of fanservice in the show with the Frieren feet. Also, very strong episode to me dealing with Starks self worth and perception. Frieren can be dense emotionally, but it shows that she's learning with how she revealed to Stark that all this time there were people who loved and acknowledged him. Fern's words of encouragement to Stark are also really powerful to me, "The warrior Stark I've known has never run away". And this show is also great at showing a characters personality and values through their actions. Starks brother not only didn't care about his cape getting dirty, but completely kneeled down in the mud to help Stark. That's a sign of humility and deep caring, and tells us all we need to know about what type of person he is. The writing in this show is so goated, even the simple things are profound. Oh, and also toddler Stark was ready to pull up to the demon fight with a wooden sword. No one can tell me he ain't ride or die. He's no coward after all.

I believe fear shouldnt be characterised as a completely negative thing as it is a feeling/emotion but the way people act on it that should be characterised as such, courage is when someone acts in pn their feats to help/save others while cowardice is the opposite where they do everything to save themselves even if it means throwing others in harms way

Hmmm, I think Western humor has always been more sexually conservative. The "HBO or nothing mentality" has been around for decades now. It's interesting, because western parents are far more likely to encourage debauchery. Eastern values are much more conservative in many respects (mainly that the family is valued over the individual). However regarding sex specifically, Christian nations tend to be much less open to discussion of it or humor about it than Asian cultures.
