We Can Reverse Aging

No that’s not clickbait.
Being able to stop and reverse aging is probably something every single person has yearned for at some point in their life. Now researchers are finally seeing successful implementations of methods for reversing aging in Animal cells. This creates the potential for countless benefits for humans. These range from simply preventing age related illness all the way to allowing women the opportunity to have kids at any point in their life when they are ready. We are living in very exciting scientific times.

This won't help old people, its all pop science bull. Most conditions that actually cause degeneration in old people aren't caused by this process of slowing down cell repair. For example, even in ideal conditions this would do nothing for Alzheimers. Alzheimers is caused by a runaway problem of "garbage" chemicals building up in the brain that form larger and larger clumps and poison living brain tissue. Now lets think about type 2 diabetes - in type 2 diabetes, the cells themselves develop insulin resistance. So it doesn't matter how much you're repairing the cells if they still can put you into a toxic ketosis. It doesn't help for heart disease either, which is largely caused by a combination of a stressful lifestyle most of us are forced to live through and diet, along with people who are born with vulnerable hearts. Even if we did live longer we would still have other health issues - the liver for example regenerates tissue in response to damage and continues to grow. This leads to a largely damaged liver that eventually fails - this is what causes death in Fatty Liver Disease or long-term alcoholism. Or, what about cancer? How does this not cause us to accelerate cancer?

Honestly.....I just don't want to get cancer. Or go bald.... Or get super shitty skin that looks like a brown paper bag. Or become senile. Or lose my energy level. Or...... So.....um, scientists....get to work, I guess? I'm 38 now....so you better hurry up. Gah....life is so hard, isn't it? Just when you feel like you finally have a grip on things and have some semblance of maturity and understanding of how to navigate the precarious waters of reality.....you're given the news that, btw....it's almost over. Get ready to die any day now. Wait....what? But I _just_ kinda sorta figured this thing out....and now it's over? That's one thing I genuinely did not get when I was younger. When I was in my early 20s, my 30s felt like a lifetime away....my 40s felt even further away. And yet....here I am. About to turn 40. As you get older time DEFINITELY starts to feel like it goes by faster. At this rate, I expect to be 60 in the blink of an eye. And that's genuinely weird to contemplate. Again....life is hard, isn't it? Sometimes I sympathize with a quote from Andy Warhol when he said, "I want to be made of plastic." I think I get what he meant. I too sometimes want to just be a fixed stable manufactured object that I get to design to my own liking....that will never degenerate. Alas....that aint how it works.....yet? Who knows....

This is definitely going to be withheld until all the consequences are observed. I mean, immortality can mean that we have to stop making children altogether, and thats an extremely dangerous course of action. We will end up having wars over something like that, massive wars of immortals vs naturalists. You also have stuff like religion who will inevitably be against it. Given our ageing population, imagine the wealth of experience being re invigorated to have a second life both in work and the sharing of knowledge and more importantly, wisdom to those that don't have any yet. For the old to feel young and capable and enthusiastic enough to either build on the work of their first life or to start over in another field that was perhaps just a dream they never found time to explore.. Truly profound implications for the human race! Death is such a waste and the more evolved we become the more primitive and antiquated it will seem.

We lose so much potential every year. If we can keep experienced, curious minds around for an additional hundred more years (or more?), imagine what they can do together. Also, I know we'd feel a greater sense of stewardship for our planet if we expected to live to see the consequences of our more destructive choices. If you had the potential for 500 years, you'd give a damn about what your home would be like in 100 years. When this comes to pass, the social upheaval will be huge and unprecedented. Literally.

Now imagine the crushing economic disaster as retirees return to the work force in droves, entry level positions disappear, and each successive generation has fewer and fewer opportunities as the population rapidly outpaces the production of jobs. Training positions would be pointless: why bother hiring and training someone when we can get a veteran? Bonus points, as the job crunch continues to press in, competition will force even the elderly to accept less and less pay. Eventually, minimum wage positions will require 10 years of experience. Not to mention, upward movement will disappear: the leader of a company can sit at the top in perpetuity. It could be decades before new positions open up, _which will rapidly be filled by equally experienced Seniors._ So in other words, your comment is imagine a world where we just keep getting to get lectured by boomers _forever_ while they continue to ruin the world.

As a measly 15yo, the concept that this might be a a viable option to receive within my lifetime is… it’s hard to take in. In day to day life we’re bombarded with the whole “Life is short” “I wish I could be a kid again” “If i had more time, i’d…”, and I can’t imagine how I’d react if I learnt that I could major in 3 different subjects, follow multiple career paths, live anywhere/everywhere, save up *millions of dollars,* learn every language- Damn… it just doesn’t see, real. I don’t think I’ll truely believe it until it’s widespread

Same, I'm 15 aswell. The thing is tho, they will likely make this extremely expensive, so unless your wealthy you likely wont experience it. Also overpopulation is a big issue. Theoretically, let's say that this does become widespread and humanity becomes imortal, and we somehow colonize other planets because of overpopulation. Money will probaly lose much of its value, and inflation will arise. Because if everyone is immortal, a million will probably not even seem like it's that much, and you will probably be trapped just like we all are now, forced to work out whole lives. Another thing is, when you get older you lose memory. I understand that part of that is ageing, but some of it is because so much happens in you life, so I'm thinking alot of people will develop alzheimers after 150 or 200. Idk tho, still cool technology, and I hope it works out better than I fear it will.

Again, *we’re talking about being the first generation to bloody live 100+ years!* Is that not the coolest thing ever?!

@@nuggetman2294 im 18 (ik im old). a lot of what u said is wrong. Overpopulation won’t be a problem in our lifetime so that is not a valid reason for the prices to go up, and inflation only happens when more money is made (I took a class on economics it’s actually pretty interesting). So just because a lot of old ppl have a lot of money doesn’t mean inflation, it means social classes between the young and old, which I think is perfectly reasonable. Also this is only targeting one type of aging, not all types. This one being the biggest and easiest to fix. Also holy crap dude living 100+ years while staying young sounds insane. Imagine all of the life changing technologies that will happen in this extended lifetime. I’m actually studying Aerospace engineering rn (I’m a freshman in college) and it would be sooo awesome to see the dawn of the space age where we have the beginnings of colonies on other planets. Maybe even see the day that they figure out how to make a warp drive (which is actually theoretically possible believe it or not).

I feel like a lot of people romanticize mortality just because it has always been unavoidable. I think people feel that we would be missing something fundamental about life without it's counterpart. But I think death is interwoven into all aspects of life. It resides within every fading memory that makes way for novelty. It resides in the blank moments between dreams in the night. It resides in the incomprehensible unfolding of time. I don't think we lose death by freeing ourselves from senescence. Perhaps we'll even become more sensitive to it. Perhaps we'll become more sensitive to life and death when they no longer feel so impossibly separate and mutually exclusive. .

The point is there are a LOT of ways we can die unrelated to getting old. That said if eternal life was possible I think we would change our society drastically to make it safer. Its one thing to look at losing the next 40 years if we do something dangerous. Its quite another to look at losing the next 4 million.

There is some work with types of "magic" mushrooms being used to target more resistant depression. Micro-doses are used. I would look into that and talk to some doctors. But you may have to talk to a couple---a lot of doctors seem to be stuck in the past and sometimes relucntant to pursue new and even more effective remedies. I think these mushroom remedies would be available via pshychiatrists, but i would consider a traditional medicine doctor as they have been doing this longer. A lot of the current drugs psychiatrists prescribe (almost always off-label) are not effective in a significant proportion of patients and the side effects are substantive and rarely discussed openly with patients (!). Hence trusting the traditional--Native American i think i heard--doctors more. But i would also have a friend around while taking the "journey."

You're right about overpopulation not being a problem. And people will live indefinitely. For example: overpopulation will never exist because technological progress increases the planet's carrying capacity. The pace of technological progress will continue to accelerate exponentially, so despite fearmongering pessimists whining about how "technology is bad and nature is good", it will be technology that solves every problem (including ill-health and the climate crisis) and brings about a bright future.
