We Built A Cheap Chinese Carbon ‘Race’ Bike (any good?)

What would go wrong? Building the cheapest Chinese carbon race bike money can buy. With a caveat, of course. That caveat being, all products for this build were voted by you, the audience. Obviously there are other cheaper Chinese carbon wheels, group-sets, frame etc. However these items were put to vote! Watch Jay Taylor build this thing up which inlcudes the Trifox X10 frame, Sensah Empire Pro 12 Speed Groupset and the Marvel 60mm Elite Carbon Race Wheels.

Big shout out to Jay Taylor for helping with this project and having the patience to finish this build. While this video is 10 minutes in length, he was at it for a solid 4 hours. So many thanks Jay! Finally, for anyone interested (after the weigh in), the Trifox X10 frame size is a medium 54.5 top tube. Cheers, Cam

0:32 that cheap blue grease is lithium based not clay. You absorb chemicals through your skin... I don't know about you, but I eat with my hands 3 times a day. Try spilling some diesel on your hands and then try to eat...for 3 days you'll still smell it. Even if that grease is odorless the chemicals don't just wash off easily, it takes weeks

I have essentially the same build Trifox (X10, Sensah, Elitewheels). My build process was smoother without some of these nagging issues like fork and seatpost, albeit I used different bars. Put a little over 1000km on the frame and haven't had any real issues with it yet. What's evident from the various reviews that are either positive or negative is that Trifox really needs to get their QC under control.

I am a little confused about the complaint about the cable routing through the frame. I see he has the rear gear cable run through the right hole in the downtube (and the front on the left). But I run them the opposite way, with the rear going the the left hole and vise versa, so the housing does not rub against the headtube. I know you can stick helicopter tape on the headtube to prevent the housing from abrading the paint, but I would rather run the housing to the opposite side and not have them rub the tube at all. Plus it makes for a smoother bend of the housing from the handlebar. Also, I would use cable liner on the cables running under the bottom bracket to prevent them from rubbing on the bare carbon, so I would not consider that a legitimate complaint either.

  • @taylorcycles1931

All 3 cable grommets were for gear cables, the brake/disc grommet should have had a lager hole for the full length cable. Also the runner for the rear brake was pre run into the front derailleur lines.

@@taylorcycles1931 I watched Hambini's Trifox review from a year ago, and now see the ports on the left side so I understand the problem now. Thank you. I wonder if he was sent a curated example for review, because he was rather impressed, given the cost. His was a different model, though. Regardless, since your example had faults, Trifox may not have good quality control over their production.

@@ronb9901 I already built 4 winspace bikes. They are simply perfect as well. So you won`t do anything wrong with either of them. ;) I don`t know about the riding quality of the Elves yet though, because it`s winter here and I don`t wanna waste a completely new bike. :) I bought the Elves frame primarely because you can chose your own colorway completely and the painting looks super nice. What I can say about the winspace(s): it`s great! They do ride at least similar or even better then any high end western brand. I have an SLC2.0 and a T1500 as my main bikes at the moment and I love both of them! The SLC (rim brake, about 6.3Kg) is an awesome climber and decents like a rocket. The T1500 (disc brake, 7.3Kg) looks super awesome and rides superb too. I already did around 10`000 km on those roadbikes and had no issues, nothing, no creaking, no faults, they just work. Since I bought my first winspace, I am done with any western brand to be honest. First, because I love building bikes and second, because it doesn`t make sense anymore to spend a lot of money just to have a known logo on your frame. :D I hope that helps a bit. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :D

And I would ride it off road with my 2 year old in a baby rucksack. The bars cracked, but, they're probably not designed for that kind of abuse. Daughter is 4 now, and I switched to alloy bars after the crack. I think the crack was due to my abuse. The first road bike and bars, and application used for, definitely good bars for the price

It has flex in the bottom bracket and lateral flex in the fork and rear dropouts so it does wonky stuff in turns (not confidence inspiring... can't crit or road race a bike like that). Pissed because I have like $2K US invested and I probably can't sell it, maybe should just part it out and eat the loss. Bought a used tarmac SL6 for $2750 and that is an awesome crit bike.

It seems that your treatment towards this brand is unprofessional, because it’s not a well known eastern brand like Seka , Yoeleo, Winspace, etc. I have friends that have this exact frame and have no issues with it , and didn’t treat it in the way you guys are treating it in the build process. I’ve seen many times even in western brands that parts of the frame were not finished properly, the fact is carbon frames are made in China and in Taiwan “about 97% are .” Fact the biggest brand Giant is an eastern brand not a western brand like the big three Trek, Specialized, Cannonade. Giant for “FACT” makes Specialized and other well known brands. Guess who makes Cervelo? ,,,,,,, Elves an eastern brand makes Cervelo frames for world tour teams, but they don’t want you to know this but it’s “FACT”,. They just don’t want people to know the big secret. Essentially we all are riding Chinese, or Tawain made carbon bikes …………. I know for a fact you would not treat other more known brands this way.

I can't believe the prices of old top of the line rim brake bikes on Facebook marketplace. I just bought an S works sl3 with full dura ace and then a set of Reynolds arX carbon wheels all up spent 1800 bucks. Bike is stiff as a rock and 6.8kg.

Some significant design tolerance and design routing issues highlighted! From reading the comments it sounds like the manufacturing output is inconsistent and suffers from a lack of proper qc. For the money though, is it worth it? You will have to ride it, race it and get some significant distance on it to find out. 👍

I guess take away is it's still better to shop second hand like damn 2000+USD is still a lot of money for a bike and that's coming from the owner of a Giant TCR Advanced lol. I mean, I'm definitely stretching that mark with my bike (I've basically gone full AliExpress besides the frame, the finishing kit and the Shimano Tiagra cranks), but when I was a kid I thought spending over 1000$ on a bike was bonkers but then again back then you could buy a carbon tcr with 5800 105 for like a little over 1000$.

Problem with manufacturing in China is often quality control. That's why you see special "review" unit that are handpicked sent to @Hambini & the like and they are always flawless. You will also see in this comments people swear that they got one and it was "perfect". The only mistake you did here was paying for it.

the same with me. I bought a Trifox X18 frame after finding only positive reviews on KZread. I had several massive defects in the frame that could only be remedied with a great deal of time and money. I've been discussing with the Trifox customer service for months without any result. Instead of a good valued frame, I received a very expensive piece of crap.

I've never had a stem to steerer issue like that bike. At least the bearings is t sloppy 😮 Seems pricey cam as you can get a carbon polygon with 105 disc and carbon wheels for 3k. I reckon I could build that for under 2.5k. I know that frame had issues but they were easy to sort and you're mechanic is a bit heavy handed with you bike mate irrespective.

It proves that if you think you can pull one out of the box and just put it together, you're not going to be able to do that. But just how serious the issues are isn't clear since nothing was measured, e.g., was the headset tight because a little bit was sticking out that needed to be sanded off or was it tight because it was too small all around.
