I could watch this all day. Bravo on all of it. It took balls to take on that gargantuan process of clearing a hoard & then literally transforming the space. It's brilliant to see what you, your wife and friends achieved. You deserve massive respect. The writer in me is intrigued by the solitary hoarder, and the way the hoard literally infested his home. Hoarding is a mental illness which is a reaction to trauma and one of the least understood conditions. I'm autistic (just dx at 57)and I came here looking for home improvement stuff as I'm about to dismantle a house I've been filling with "things" for 12 years. This has helped me process my own hysterical reaction to loss, and my attachment to "everything" Let Go, Let God Much love to you all reading this from Ireland on New Year's Eve 2022 In 90 minutes it will be 2023!! I know that this video is 2 years old, but I wanted to let you know: there is a reason why walls should be light. Rental homes need emotionally and psychologically stable renters who will be able to keep a job and an income. White walls reflect much more light. Light is a base factor for human well-being. It improves the mood and makes you feel more awake and active. Light is seen by the amygdala, a gland inside our head. It regulates activity and happiness. Lack of light can lead to depression. That is why you always choose white walls, to improve your renters health - and protect your own wallet.

Why would you regret it? As long as you remember to keep what you need it is honestly a great idea. Minimalism doesn't have to be extreme, it can just be buying more mindfully and getting rid of junk.

Way easier to customize for the buyer. It's not a deal breaker, but my heart sinks whenever I see a red accent wall or something in a home for sale lmao.

I developed the habit, in my early 20s to go through my things every year and to give or throw away anything I hadn’t used in the previous two years. My wife is the same as well. Having kids has changed our routine a bit, we do have more stuff than we’d like; but the habit has helped us from accumulating a bunch of unnecessary junk.

I declutter every 3 months. Also if I bring something in, something must go out. A nice extra super clean afterwards too, and regular cleaning throughout the week, it takes so much stress away plus you really think about whether you really want something or need it.

as a digital nomad for more than 10 years now, my life pretty much has to fit a in a large size + hand luggage so I've been used to do that on top of not buying much stuff to start with.

Dark paint colors make rooms feel smaller. Dark gray has a negative affect on the psyche. I learned this in real estate psychology and feng shui courses. You did a nice job, but the color choices are depressing. Good job on the white cabinets and the flooring.

A waterbed! I thought the pile was alive:) It's so much easier to clean a hoard when the hoarder is not around saying "I want to keep that, keep that, keep that, keep that.

I've never seen such a clean hoard. You were very lucky those floors were so easily cleaned. Fantastic and impressive work here 😊👍 I love the flooring you put in. And I can tell the gray walls are a lighter color that they appear here. Very nice. You're also lucky to have the realtor for this one.

As someone who does junk removal, and has filled many 20 yard dumpsters...I felt pain for you when you said it took 9 for the entire house..😭 my head is reeling at the amount we would charge for a job like that.. On a side note, watching someone do what I do for a living while comfortable in my bed was quite satisfying. Cheers, great video

This was so cool to watch. Gray seems to be the go to color nowadays. I thought it was ok until I rented an apartment with all gray walls. I never realized how much color affected my mood until I lived in a gray apartment. It was beautiful apartment but the gray was causing me depression. My current place has white walls and I’m so much happier. It’s crazy how color can affect mood.

Great video! I thought the same thing about painting behind cabinets but then it was explained to me that the paint seals the drywall and if you don’t paint it drywall really absorbs a lot of smells and can make the house smell very bad after a couple years

Uniformity in the flooring is always the best as it gives the impression of spaciousness.

I’m not sure if you had the home tested or not but popcorn ceilings very often have asbestos due to the materials that were used when they were most popular. If you don’t test, I would use full PPE with a full face respirator and a hepa negative airfan.

Where I live, this would be illegal. It's well known that these ceilings contain asbestos, and the penalties for removing it without abatement of dust are severe!

They got a clean hoarder house if that makes sense. Like he said in the video, luckily it wasnt nasty trash and animal waste. It was mostly random stuff, clothes and paper. Would have been a different story if he had any animals living with him. Things get horrible when people have animals or just never throw away their food or sanitary trash. Some hoarders are down right disgusting, but this one was just clutter.

I have found that the hoarders I know (a few homes) are all very clean people. They have an unhealthy relationship with "stuff" but you would never know it because they dress nice, smell nice, and people just don't see inside their homes. TV shows seek out the grossness because it's good TV. I would bet that's a small percentage of hoarders.

@@offhandacoustic I remember watching a TV show about hoarders once, there was stuff floor to ceiling with passage ways through the towers of clutter, am sure they found the hoarders dead cat that had died after a pile collapsed on it and the owner thought it had run off.

We bought a house recently and I have spent considerable time and energy on repainting a bunch of stuff. Here are some words of wisdom based on the experience: Don't use dark colors on the walls of rooms with no windows. School bus yellow is not an appropriate color choice, ever. Don't paint ceilings the same color as the walls (unless white). And folks, don't paint over the outlets!

I do think things have certain value, and so probably i'm halfway a hoarder, but I like sorting out things

You should avoid putting a "nook" in a small shower opposite the wet wall because the constant spray will cause the joints to leak in a short time. Always put them either under the shower head or in the corner of that wall. If you can't do the wet wall, the wall adjacent to the wet wall is a secondary choice.

Fabulous job.... might I suggest next time you are on multi level house with skip under the windows, to make an open chute with sides , to throw the runbush onto. It will slide down straight into the skip. You can move it easily to each window. No need for ropes on the bins

It takes 17 weeks for my dad to even finish planning a construction project so accomplishing one in that short of a time span is impressive!

I was a painting contractor for over 25 years. Two things I see that you might want to think about. 1. Primer. It makes every job look way better. And you almost never have to do more than a single coat of paint on a primed wall or ceiling 2. Texture and primer the ceiling. If you're going for a pseudo "smooth wall" finish, at least primer it.

Something I noticed too. The paint will show lines on the tape joints down the road. Also surprised on the formica countertops in the kitchen. Very 1970's. I understand the cost savings though.

@@johnsarcaneautos Yeah, I'm not crazy about that either, but he is smart to look at the area and stay within those boundaries. If formica counters are standard for that area, then it makes sense. It's a financial investment, not his personal home. He needs to not overdo it and eat up his profit unnecessarily.

@@johnsarcaneautos Every stain, tape line, paint line, mold, etc,.. will bleed through if you don't prime. I'd put formica in rental properties. Never in a flip. You lose half the money a kitchen remodel would have net if you used high end appliances and materials. To save what? 25% on material costs? You'll end up getting less and probably lose out on bidders. Most buyers are looking for turn key and don't want to spend money updating things like a newly remolded kitchen.

Thanks for the tips! Will have to try that next time, we always end up painting 2 coats of paint anyways, so 1 coat of paint and 1 of primer would be cheaper and apparently finish better. And yes, the counters were chosen because the neighborhood does not call for higher end finishes. Would not have made the house sell or rent for much more!

Beautiful work. That was a lot. I have to say, the gray makes everything look really dreary. I would hate having my home be all gray like that and gray is one of my favorite colors. Can’t say I’m a fan.

A suggestion for installing the lower cabinets of your kitchens: instead of using 4 adjustable legs on every base cabinet, start by installing a strip of wood on the wall below the cabinet, at the toe kick height. It’s easy to install this perfectly level, and with the top edge of the strip as a ledge to sit your cabinets on, your kitchen will be perfectly level all around. Use the adjustable legs on the front only to level the cabinet from front to back.

The reason I paint behind cabinets, is that it takes more time to go around it than to just keep rolling through it.

its hard to put furniture up against , logically we know it can be done but there is a deep seated fear that people have and that they don't want to feel unsecure because what if the railing gave way? It doesn't help when in some movies people crash through railings in fight situations .

That's a good idea! At the time, I was not sure how my budget was going to turn out so was just trying to keep costs down for this level of home. In hindsight, knowing my budget turned out fine, I should have done something more creative there!

I prefer it with the drywall, not only can you more easily put furniture against it, you can also put artwork and pictures to decorate. It creates a set space for each room, and feels safer, especially if you have children.

My previous house had a upstairs living room with half walls over downstairs entryway leading into second living area. It could have been more open with railing instead of half walls, but it would have been unnerving, especially since I had a baby/toddler at the time. I think the solid half walls help separate the upstairs and downstairs living spaces, but keep some light and openness.

Great work, that's a phenomenal transformation! Would've loved to see a walkthrough tour to really piece it all together.

The painting behind the cabinets just feels like more of a sense of completion. It only takes a few more minutes, and it feels sooo much better!!! We recently had our kitchen redone, and the contractor didn’t want to paint behind the fridge. So, I painted it myself when they weren’t here. It would have been a perpetual source of irritation to me knowing it wasn’t complete.

That's an ocd tendency. I would paint it too or it would bother me, but a buyer or renter won't be bothered because they will never see behind them to know that they weren't painted.

I think it's more work to remember where the cabinets are supposed to goand stop painting there, than to just give the wall another stroke and finish it. And a bit of, don't just do it, do it right.

It's an amazing transformation! The hoarding, to me, is a clear manifestation of how material things can consume someone's entire life, finances and relationships; I can't imagine any aspect of one's life that wouldn't be affected by it, and I can't imagine how tragic it would be to live like that. So glad you were able to turn that house into something others can enjoy once more!

A hoarder has extreme OCD too. Their so obsessed with keeping everything including trash. I cleared a hoarders kitchen today for 4 hours and it looked like I did nothing!!

Interesting. Two different sides of the coin of OCD. One must maintain cleanliness and order, the other must keep every single item they have come into contact with or else both will suffer unbearable anxiety. I feel so sorry for the owner and others like him, there must be underlying issues/mental health. I don’t think for a minute people want to live like that but something happened eg a bereavement, life spiralled out of control and then they were stuck. Think governments need to offer help, not judgement, for these people. Think this renovating guy did a good job & was pleased to read that sentimental things were handled sensitively.

@@joanneedwards5630 Usually this happens after they lost loved ones, like shocking losses that you'd never see coming. It leads to hoarding when it creates this mindset that makes it difficult to even part with an apple core without feeling loss.

Every single task you did was perfect. If I were doing this, I would have done each step the same way. It's so refreshing to see a younger generation taking pride in their work and paying attention to detail. I admire your drive, talent and knowledge. Great job!!!!!👍

Absolutely incredible. I am super impressed at all you were able to do on your own with this house. I cleaned up my father's hoarder home after he passed and it took me about 10 months to clear everything out solo (as I couldn't trash everything, had to sort through it all), 5 dumpsters-full, and then another 7 months for gutting and renovations with actual crews of guys as I didn't have the stamina or knowledge to do it myself. Mold remediation, kitchen+3 bathrooms+basement all completely redone, new patio door plus new patio poured, finished basement out... it was an ordeal and a half in the middle of the pandemic! Never again!

I was married to a compulsive hoarder, and it was awful. I had a constant sensation of suffocation from his excessive possessions. He refused to give me space for my food in our refrigerator. I had to buy my own refrigerator because of this.

You did an amazing job! One thing I would never do is rent it. Sell it at it's peak and walk away. I would be curious as to what you paid for the house and what you sold it for. You really didn't cut corners at all. I think this would be a wonderful house to own. You deserve whatever profit you made! You are such a hard worker and you have excellent friends! 😊

while i think using the same color can save time and money, gray is very taste specific and isn't really a neutral color that can go with all types of decor. It can be very depressing and set a dark moody tone to a room...but its one person's opinion and as you can tell by the comments everyone has different tastes in decorating. All that aside, nice job and you have a great ability to see the potential in an overwhelimg mess.

Cheaper and easier does not always mean lower quality! I buy materials that are the best quality for their price, I always try to get the most bang for my buck. I do things that are easier and can save me time, so I can finish the house faster. That doesn't mean I cut corners or do bad work. I realize there are bad flippers out there, but as Kaotic said not all new builds are perfect either!

@@TREE52HD Nothing wrong with the way new houses are built. That's the beauty of advancing the science of engineering: you can build things properly instead of overbuilding everything. Unless you live in some palace it doesn't matter how strong your walls are, nobody is going to still want to live in your house in 150 years.

Beautiful job! As a renter, it’s really nice to see a landlord who has put so much effort and care into their property. You don’t get that a lot where I’m from 😅 people are pretty desperate for house and that’s being a bit taken advantage of but this was a beautiful job. Very lucky renters, for sure.

The gray killed the atmosphere but thats just my opinion. I would have gone with a beach sand brown and a soft yet strong blue for the bathroom. All together the house looks WAYYYY BETTER then it did in the beginning. Very impressive construction work

Watching this was a huge pleasure :D I could not have done the clean up in a week, not even with a help of couple of friends... You guys were just so efficient, it's great! :)

I've heard of contractors attaching their scraper to a shop vac when you want to remove a popcorn ceiling so you can catch almost everything as it falls. It might help limit exposure when working with ceilings known to have asbestos. Not sure if it would work for you guys but definitely something to keep in mind if it will help! Love the video!

Exactly. Most popcorn ceilings from the 1970s are riddled with asbestos and removing it can be dangerous if you don't take precautions to avoid airborne asbestos fibers and wear face masks and respirators.

@@caseyflorida if there really is asbestos in the ceiling you have to call specialized technicians to remove it... I know that in Europe the government itself takes care of the decontamination, might have something like that in the US too. Then again, it's uncommon nowadays to find un insulated asbestos ceilings/constructions here

Popcorn ceiling otherwise known as Vermiculite and it almost always contains asbestos. Areas need to be bubbled and P3 respirator masks and full PPE worn, this is why it needs to be done by professionals. PS vinyl is also an asbestos product.

The nice thing about cleaning this house is that you have NO emotional attachment to anything here. Makes cleaning easier to just throw away the ;trash;. Good video. I'm amazed at how much plumbing you did on your own.

It’s very... grey 🥲 the dark grey colors were very much loved in like 2010 and you could find it everywhere but now it’s definitely too dark with the dark brown floor. Would have loved to see a brighter grey, that actually makes the space neutral, as grey kinda should do instead of darkening it.

I used to be a hoarder id hold on to anything. Now I just have a lot of stuff. I have collections and many crafts but it's all neatly organised just got to reorganise my new bedroom! I just dont know how someone could live like this. I'm glad you were able to clear it. Goes to show the stuff we hang onto doesn't matter when we're gone!

In sweden we demolish 50% of houses in areas because they are a little bit too old and bring down the value of the area lol

Not many people insulate an interior wall. The only thing it would do is dampen a little sound, and I mean just a little.

@@KashFloPro you did right. I dont know a single contractor that puts insulation in an interior wall. At most, you’d do soundproofing and certainly not on a reno, unless you’re doing it for yourself.

@@WendifurTTV not just a little bro, it dampens it alot! i know cause i build houses for a living and in some projects we try to save money for the customer so we dont insulat some inner walls but everytime we dont insulate the customer calls us back because of the sound and ends up paying for the extra insulation

@@cazztk2161 I agree, having that sound protection goes a long way when a group of noisy teens are around. If it were a remodel for personal use yes. But for a flip? I feel it would have been helpful, but it would have taken more supplies and man hours. It wouldn't have been practical for him.

It sucks that you didn’t bother to put insulation inside the new walls or use the underlay for the flooring. Those are two small things that make a huge difference to someone’s home and it’s not even that expensive or time consuming but it changes the entire feel of the home.

I appreciate the concerns - the laminate flooring in the bedroom already has an attached underlayment underneath. Way easier to work with. The vinyl planks in the lower level also had an attached pad. The vinyl in the upper level, the specific floors I used actually prohibit you from using an underlayment. Vinyl floors are thinner than laminate, so if you put the squishy underlayment underneath them the tongue and groove parts can break. And I did not know that most places used insulation on interior walls! That is definitely not the standard where we are, so it must be a regional thing.

I love watching flippers take a rundown house & make it i to a beautiful home, but I've never seen a hoarders house before. This was a masterpiece, it's beautiful now. 👍🙋‍♀️
