The deep water fording kit is more than just an extended exhaust... it has the ability to pressurize parts of the drivetrain to keep water out. You can find the complete kits for just over $1K. I don't know what you paid for an M998, but you could have bought a second-gen M1097 or M1123 with low miles for the low teens, and they have a 6.5L with the 4LE80 4-speed auto with overdrive AND park. Many also have the deep water fording kit installed, perhaps missing the intake and exhaust extensions. Gale Banks used to make a turbo kit for the 6.5L engine, and the turbo for that kit is still available. But, the LS swap is the way to quick, inexpensive power if you don't want to keep it mil-spec. Otherwise there's the 6.5L turbo engine specifically for HMMWVs that will require a different engine cover/doghouse in the passenger compartment to make room for the rear-mounted turbo... and that engine can be hopped up with aftermarket turbo to reach around 300 HP.

That master switch was added. They don’t have keys in the military. Also your diff’s have an air pump that creates positive pressure so no liquid can enter. They bubble as you’re driving under water.

Props to the homie that never gave up asking cleeter to continue the driving underwater series. Absolute legend 🤘

Hilariously awesome, I drove these quite a bit after being in the Army for 8 years, haha. There is zero leg room, and they are the slowest vehicles I've ever driven in my life, but they are amazingly capable. You could take it into the pond immediately and succeed! Also, the key is aftermarket, in the military all they have is the ignition switch and a retractable steel cable steering wheel lock (to be used with a padlock)

Every Marine Corps Humvee is equipped with a deep water fording kit. Not all of the other branches are. Someone added that intake stack, it's not as tall as the legit pieces. The diffs, hubs, and transmission are tied into the fording kit. There's a valve on the engine that uses crankcase gases to pressurize all the drivetrain components to keep water out. There's a lever on the dash to switch from vent to ford on vehicles equipped with it. I've had those things in water 3/4 up the windshield.

Day #1 of asking Cleet to bring the underwater comment guy along for the ride across the pond.

Day #1 of supporting this effort

The diffs, hubs, trans, and transfer should all have vent lines run to the intake so they can handle some deep water as long as the snorkel is tall enough. I put a ton of fording kits on back in 2002, the real fording kits bring the intake and exhaust to just above the roof line, the exhaust already has a v-band just behind the muffler so it will be easy to take the tail pipe off and fab a new one. also the kits included a fan shut off switch so the fan doesn't snap blades when it hits the water, i have busted a few radiators on ones without kits braking blades and sending them into the radiator when fording.. Also if this has a 3 speed then it was a 6.5 swap, it originally had a 6.2, 6.5 models came with a 4l80e and that worked a lot better than the 3 speed...

That's a nice unit right there, most of the ex-military ones are beat to pieces. Also convertible is the only way to go, buddy bought a camo green ex-Army unit, it was the tin top with the sloping rear roof. Couldn't drive it 6 months of the year in Tennessee, it was basically a tin can oven with no a/c or any type of insulation.

The motorcycle key switch forward of the shifter is a fuel cut off switch so someone doesn't seal your truck. I have the same thing on my 1990 M998. You should also have the the cable loop to lock the steering wheel. ENJOY!!! I love mine too! Semper Fi from a Marine vet. ;)

I work on Hummers all the time at work. You can make a bracket to go above the passenger windshield to connect to a taller intake tube.

Where you busted the U-turn and said full throttle. That is where people exit Coffee and Rides at Detail Garage. That stretch has seen many full throttle launches there but this has to be the slowest one. I love the H1. What an American vehicle

I've done the driving thru water in one exactly like that one before my last deployment ... the fan is a weak point don't just fly into the water... we hit the washout at max freedom and broke every blade off the fan when the front end went under .. it made it thru but the fan was cooked.. just wanted to give you a heads up

You have to disengage the fan by flooring the gas pedal . There is a time delay switch that will turn off the fan also will disengage for passing. It also look like the HMMWV he bought doesn't have the deep fording switch.

Cool Humvee fact. The trans transfer case and both diffs vent into the air box. Had a guy one time that hooked a fuel line to the vent system and filled everything with diesel. I had to build the t400 and tcase that was fun

Day 1 of trying to convince Cleetus to buy a helicopter and learn how to fly it.

After WWII, the Army tried to use underwater tanks in an effort to take a beach (like on D-Day/Omaha Beach). It didn't work. If you run a snorkel to the motor and extend the exhaust, there is enough of an air bubble inside the tank that the tanks started to float at a certain point. Dirt Every Day/Motor Trend tried to do it with what was basically a 4BT swapped Jeep, the jeep started to float and they couldn't get anywhere. If your attempt is to work, you are probably going to need more weight swapped in and reduced tire pressure, in addition to your efforts to seal up the drivetrain.

I can’t believe the guy who kept making the comment about driving under water finally succeeded!!!!! Don’t know your name dude but we all owe you huge!!!!

I used to work on humvees it will totally make it under water but you will need to drain the Differentials and the reduction boxes on each four corners of the truck after because they have breathers It will cause it to fill up with water. Super easy to drain and fill with Differential fluid and another thing to look at is the air intake that’s on top that goes from the air filter there’s a rubber gasket underneath there in the two bolts on top also go through to the manifold so if you can seal those off of like silicone you’re probably with mask or else you know if they’re older it’s going to get water in there because those rubber go real quick. If you have any other humvee questions you can email me. Easy to work on just that you have to literally take a lot of shit off to replace things cause it’s tight in there.

Hey man, just a little tip. If you happen to get under 25 feet when you take the plunge, best thing to do is take a 3 minute safety stop at 3 feet, just in case.

The box-Truck incident means that you need to make a " I Passed Cleetus " Bumper-Sticker that you give to the few that do this to ya. So what if he passed ya in the speed-limited Hummer - He DID it. Good PR, guys.

I love hummers always wanted one. You can get one with out the engine or trains for about 10,000$ and it just has not happened for me but I couldn't be more happy to see you get one. Hell yeah brother

I’m sure you’ve heard this one before but the channel dirt every day. They put together a jeep called tube sock which was the jeep that went through the lake with a huge huge snorkel and a scuba tank. They covered everything it takes to make it happen pretty well

As a service member, who’s job is specifically to drive tactical vehicles. it’s not exactly hard to hate the hmmwv. If you’re an 88m or motor t op you know exactly what I mean.

Make sure you check the steering linkage ball joints and idler arms they are known to have issues wearing out prematurely and popping off.

I owned a ‘94 and a ‘96 civilian version. Awesome vehicles. Wish I never sold the ‘96. Murphy NC has great trails. Do not hit brakes hard if wheelspeed is up. Recipe for snapped halfshaft.

Hummers and other trucks come with a deep ford kit for the Marines. I think it was 60” tall. The other branches dont get these by default. The exhaust on your hummer isnt the deep ford exhaust though. There is also a switch under the steering wheel for when you deep ford lol. I think all it really does is suck water into all your seals but thats what its for!

The tracker needs to have a memorial at the freedom factory like a gravel pile for it to sit on

It might top out at 69mph but it'll haul all your gear and a house behind it when doing so and you wouldn't even notice. That's the beauty of it. Low-key one of the best apocalypse vehicles to have. Simple to fix and can run on the shittiest of diesel that you can make in your backyard.

Cleeter... you'll should put in a Texas big block, boosted LS in there as a series as well.... I'd watch that for sure!!!

Hey cleetus i have 6 humvees and heres some important stuff i can tell you about them. The intake box where it makes a 90 from the snorkel is NOT sealed it has to be sealed to go into water. The batteries are not sealed either they are under the right passanger seat. The rod nock sound is the loud ass inhection pump. You can get them turned up at an injection shop and the intake runners can get port matched easily because they are shitty castings and restrictive. I took off the muffler and built a 4 inch exhaust for mine. And banks sells a turbo kit for these also. The tires have a big rubber runflat in them you can take them out and get a plastic insert for the tire and gets rid of the vibration and making it more smoother of a ride on and off road.and picks up speed alot better. As for the suspension leave it stock its best stock. Keep it full of oil and add a lucas bottle to it on oil changes. With the exhaust and injection pump work done to mine it peggs the mph gage and roals coal

Adjust the timing on it and it'll sound a bit better. Top of valley, right in the front. Injection pump has 3 15mm bolts holding it in place. Loosen them slightly and rotate it 1/16" right or left and listen to the sound change. More it shakes is more power, less it shakes is better mpg and idle.

Can also clean injectors with straight injector cleaner by taking off, and connecting the feed and return lines to a bottle of cleaner and it'll be a closed loop cleaning system while it runs
