We bought a Porsche 944 Turbo and toured North America from Detroit to NYC

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My grown up son and myself, we bought an '87 Porsche 944 Turbo in the US.
Before, we had only seen pictures of her on the internet.
The car was handed over to us in Detroit and we used her to tour the northeast of the USA / southeast of Canada, visiting Toronto, Montreal, Portland, Boston, Long Island and New York City. This is what we experienced on our road trip.

Absolutely love this episode! I have been a transaxle guy for over 40 years, started with a base 1978 924, then bought (and still have) a 1987 944, and have added a 1992 968. While I love all Porsches, in my humble opinion, the 944 is the sexiest and most practical sports car that they have ever made. Just love the flared fenders and quarter panels. Hope you bring Loretta back to Germany and fix her up to all her original glory.

@@GreasyFingers understand! With the turbos, exhaust work can be a pain with the crossover pipe. Can gain additional power by using the K26-8 (think I have this right) from the 88 turbo s / 89 turbo.

Looks like Loretta has found another loving owner. Your video was a pleasurable education into the history of the 944. As a previous Porsche owner (986) maybe it's time for me to get another. From where i'm sitting i can almost see my neighbours white 944. It hasn't moved in a while. I wonder if he's contemplating selling. Cheers from Eastern Canada.

Take it home, you won’t regret it. I had a 944 Turbo in 1987 and loved it. Last year, I scratched an itch and bought a 1990 Turbo from England. After some work by an amazing specialist garage, I just love driving it and definitely won’t be parting with it . You’re right, it makes the 911 feel like the dog it is. Faster, handles better, more comfortable, just an all round better car which was denigrated by 911 owners who couldn’t believe Porsche could produce a better car than it. The same applies to Boxsters, a better car in every way. It’s taken Porsche 60 years to tame the evil handling 911.

Thanks, Eddie. Yes, transaxle Porsche‘s are magnificent. But you know, 911‘s do have that certain something. There’re objectively neither fast nor … (fill in whatever), but no other car drives like them and the whole thing is great fun.

lol, there is someone who daily drives a 944 Turbo in a teal colour. My uncle had a 86 and it was pretty nice, sadly someone sort of "Improved it" and it didn't go well. As With any older vehicle going to need some maintenance / replacement parts, but it's nice to see one thats not been molested and is mostly original.

Brilliant video. I stumbled upon your channel a while ago, but just started to watch your videos. When seeing this 944 video in the list, I had to immediately watch it. My father owns a 944 base model (but already with the new interior) since I was pretty young. Back then they where still in the time period where nobody really wanted them. I'm 25 now and all the years the car was only driven occasionally at nice weather for weekend drives and only a few longer trips. Apart from maintenance very few things had to be done in that time. Somehow it is a bit of a standard for me that the car is here and I guess that, even apart from me really liking it, I don't appreciate it enough. I have my own vehicles, which are all very different to the 944 and take more of my attention, even though I somehow even can't give those the attention I would actually like to do. But somehow the 944 is still very special for me. Watching the trip with your son was also really enjoyable as it combined an awesome car with nice scenery and cinematography. I also really like your "subjective analytics" - describing absolutely seriously and objectively, why serious and objective factors don't matter for your emotions. I am a bit jealous for your personal connections, as you even have contacts on the other side of the pond that you can rely on. I am pretty much alone with my private automotive interests and don't really have friends to share them with. Please keep up your really enjoyable videos. Kind regards from a young mechanical engineer, located near Stuttgart Tobias

Fantastic car. The 968 is IMHO even more practical as the body is zinc protected so rust is much rarer than on a 944. 6th gear on the 968 makes it a superb high speed or long distance cruiser. As for looks, that everyone has to make their own mind up as to which they prefer, but in any case, these cars are built for long lives and long journey's like yours. Great video.

Fun Fact: At 3:02, you can see a stretch of what is Lake Road (Chemin du Lac) with Knowlton's Landing in the background, on the shores of Lac Memphremagog. On this exact stretch of road is also where the opening scene of the movie Taking Lives was filmed, with Angelina Jolie and Kiefer Sutherland. I watched them film the scene where the Suburban rolls over into the adjacent field. Timestamp 3:12 would be where the Suburban was when it began it's "journey." @@GreasyFingers all 944 are prone to fires due to aging rubber fuel lines over engine. Almost all of them have cracky wire looms. Be sure to look after starter wire loom and popups loom all those that are near heat or that work and bend... Most of them were never changed and can burn you 951 to the ground. Basicaly you should walk around from the tank to the engine and change the rubber fuel hoses and look at the wire looms in the engine bay especially with high Amps like alternator , starter and front popups... or you have papers that it was done few years back.

When my twin boys grew to school age it had to go (for an Audi 100 Avant) but it had an astonishing capacity to swallow luggage and shopping. Loved it to bits. When the boys left home I bought the 928S4 and although I loved it dearly it was a rare day it did better than 15 mpg (15 litres per 100km?) as opposed to double that in the 944 turbo and, being a 928, needed constant tender loving care which needed deep pockets. What a joy those trans-axles were. At least my gravestone won’t say “I wish I’d bought that Porsche.”
