Know this was ancient history. Durin' 67 to' 70 in the wonderful U.S>Army with the old fashion deuce + half with the tandem rear tires (8 altogether) being a grease monkey decided to check the rear differential. Carefully unscrewed the top differential plug. MMMM, nothing comes out ! This was expected so I tried the drain plug, same thing happened. Stuck my finger inside, something was moving inside ! So surprised (yea right). I dug out about 2 handfulls of bearings from inside !!!!!! This differential was ruined completely. The differential had never been checked probably since the day it was made !!!!!!! My warrant officer was shocked + went to 3rd echelon mechanics to be repaired. We always had plenty of work with these trucks !!!!

I used to drive these trucks at Eglin AFB. I had a great time. You guys will love it. Don’t forget these trucks are Army Proof! We used to bleed the air from the tanks before storage to prevent tank corrosion. Don’t stand in front of the air tank valves when they’re open so you don’t get injected with water.

Never a dull moment around here... 😂
I was given for free this same truck because the brakes were broken. I then also got ride of it for the same reason. Rockwell parts needed to be upgraded to After Market Monster Truck parts. it was out of my project range at the time.
Seeing this truck triggers my PTSD. That center seat matches the round hatch in the roof. Some of our trucks had a ring mount for a machine gun above that hatch.
@AmbitionStrikes

Thank you for your service! We have talked about mounting a water cannon in the roof opening...
@7:36 Riley, this is what your life memories are made of and Courtney will know that. ;)
I suggest keeping the truck and making the necessary repairs. That’s a vehicle that can take just just about anywhere. Heck, if I had a place to store and work on a LMTV, I would buy one. They are awesome,
@bry8890

Accept that any military vehicle seems to literally break down when its parked LOL
The air tanks need to be purged. There are usually places to do this where the air tank "spits." This is the sound it makes once the tanks fill to 120psi. There should be a wire lanyard or chain that allows you to pull a pressure release valve and water should spray out of the tanks. Once the tanks stop spraying water. Your lines should be clear from moisture that can lay in the air lines. @7:00 It's pretty obvious that this maintenance was not performed when the vehicle was parked. This was what cause the erosion in your check valve. There is also water separator on the engine that should be purged before you crank the engine over, the longer the vehicle sits, the more water build up in the tanks from condensation.

Crazy purchase. Living the dream! Thanks for sharing
Little pro tip if you haven’t already sorted it, if you just put your hand over the alarm while the air pressure builds it makes it a lot more tolerable. Also, with the truck in park you can press the accelerator to increase the output of the compressor to build the pressure faster. I’m curious, were the brakes actually locked prior to having the pressure to release them? I would assume they were and when they disengaged they didn’t want to reengage? 🤔 and if all 4 are doing it then I’d think it would be a mix or cross over valve that effected the operation of both sides and the front and back as well. I find it a bit unlikely that all brake chambers should’ve failed at once. Let us know what you find out. Thanks!
@AmbitionStrikes
3 жыл бұрын
Riley eventually figured out both of your tips, which saved our ears and patience! 😂 Once we got it home we tested the psi at each wheel and every wheel was receiving 110 psi. They system gets to pressure quickly and holds pressure over night. The parking brake could lock the vehicle up and keep it from moving forward but it would drive right through the service brakes. After driving it a bit they seem to be getting better so we are wondering if things were just rusty from sitting by the cost for 4 years and needed working loose?
@TimTaigaTradesman

That’s kind of what I was leaning toward as well. I would be interested to see inside one of those drums to see how the shoes look. Watch your backs, because the tires are not light if you go to pull one off to check! Also there is typically a troop ladder shoved up under the bed somewhere to get in and out of the back. However, it may have been borrowed long term from your new rig 😂🤷🏽♂️

Remember, the lowest bidder*/best politically connected company won the contract to build those trucks. (* not necessarily lowest bidder, but cheapest to build for sure ) As to the manuals, I worked for a company that wrote such manuals AFTER, in my case, the helicopter was built, flying and sold to the Army. We had to figure out how things worked and write the manuals to describe them, and maintenance and repair of same. VERY frustrating. Hopefully, we got it all right, but no way to check.

@@KutWrite The FMTV trucks were initially built by Stewart & Stevenson in Sealy, Texas. The first couple of thousand production units were shipped in place while S&S and the US Army finalized the Steyr based design. Production was then halted as the huge inventory was run through a retrofit line. I visited the plant several times back in the 1990s to assess progress on the program. S&S had e-coat tanks at their assembly plant where they dipped frame components to meet USA corrosion requirements. The Cat engines, axles, etc were high quality commercial components. Good to see an FMTV truck still motoring.

While it is a true 'Ford vs Chevy' argument, by far, the S&S FMTV1078 was one of THE BEST trucks ever built! Well thought-out, Cat engine, very robust with relatively few 'surprise failures'...it far-outperformed the M35/M800/M900 trucks that were its predecessors. Personally, I always wanted to purchase one privately, modify a 20-ft shipping container into an RV-camper body, and make it one of those 'owned-for-life' all-purpose RV/Camper/Hunting rig trucks!...old age an declining health now makes that just a pipe-dream, though...

The M939 series is a far better vehicle. They put just about the worst engine Cat made in the LMTV, and they tend to have electrical issues. A 923 may be more clunky and less driver friendly but it beats the S&S unit for reliability.

As a veteran I would suggest purging the air tanks as they can build up waater from condensation.Just a bit of advise from an old warhorsee.

The alarm is just the air pressure, it turns off when the air builds up in the tank, a small trick we do is just get a piece of duct tape and put it on the buzzer it muffles the alarm by a lot. Look up the Technical Manual (TM) and it’ll show you how conduct PMCS for the LMTV and it’ll tell you step by step on how perform operator level maintenance, and show you the parts needed and all that good stuff! If anything stop by your local Reserve or National Guard Center and I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to show you and give you some tips, these vehicles are fully amazing and are extremely versatile. It’s nice for Fording high water.

Oh thanks for the tip, we are definitely going to have to quiet that buzzer down a bit! Sounds like we need to get it up to Idaho and find some water crossings! 😂
