    Even if the cult members were just nice & innocent people and this wasn’t a set up for sacrifice, it would still be a huge no from me. Flying for hours, being taken to the middle of nowhere, no independent transportation, and having to make small talk with a bunch of strangers all day long. That is a freaking nightmare 👎🏻

    I can see how Dani could be taken in by these people to join. Even if she was allowed to leave with Christian, she has nothing to go back to. No family, no boyfriend who cares, and she doesn’t appear to have a lot of friends or be that interested in school. She is also exhausted & weak from all the pain & trauma and is desperate for connection with anyone. No wonder Pele really wanted her to come with him. I don’t think she picked Christian to die as revenge, but because she knew she wanted to stay, so she couldn’t choose one of the cult members. Plus burning Christian was like burning away the last of her old life. That’s my guess

  • @Lannisen

    As a Swede I adore this film, and while it surprisingly comedic, it's also remarkably we researched. The clothes and music are clearly inspired by our folk style, all the actors are Swedish so the language is accurate. The commune is named after a folk song, Hårgalåten, I which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young folk dance until they die, just like their May Pole dance. Ättestupa was a custom mentioned in the viking times, where you had a chance for an honorable death by jumping off a cliff once you grew old enough to be a burden. The blood eagle is also from viking times, a torture method where they opened them up along the spine and pulled out the lungs while the victim was still alive. Oh, and the painting over Dani's bed is by Swedish artist John Bauer, very very recognisable for Swedes, while also being a nice foreshadowing.

    Christitan's basically the definition of a toxic boyfriend and a toxic friend - he gives a little bit, he takes a lot, then when he gets called out for it he acts like he gives more than he takes and that somehow everything is someone else's fault. In fact there's even an extended scene where Dani tries to break up with him and he gets all annoyed and accusatory and makes her feel bad for doing it like he didn't want to break up with her, right down to the accusing her of giving him some flowers to make him feel bad about forgetting her birthday. I don't know what the red-haired girl sees in him, she could do so much better.

    Well, she's really only had three guys to choose from for sperm donation,of the three, Christian and Mark were the most genetically similar to their group, and she decided that she found Christian to be the more attractive of the two. I don't think Maja saw anything in his personally. She just wanted to get pregnant. He's a sperm donor. She's aware he's probably going to die afterward and this isn't a concern to her. She just needed the genes of someone who wasn't her cousin to maintain genetic diversity so the group doesn't die out, and it needed to be someone who looked like one of them. Simon and Josh weren't white, and Mark was too dumb to be considered genetically desirable.

    I've literally dumped this guy. The crazy part is he wasn't relieved that I was picking up on his distance and deciding to pull the plug. He was still butthurt, because what he REALLY wanted was access to my emotional and domestic labor and regular sex WITHOUT giving anything in return. Me telling him "you're clearly not into this relationship. So I'm ending it" was met with "I don't know what you're talking about," "we have a good thing here," "let's talk about why you think I'm distant." Um no, I'm not litigating our breakup. Just go away now. The cognitive dissonance of these guys is unreal.

I'd put %150 into that relationship and when I asked for it in return he'd get defensive. Any amount of effort I wanted like dates or more time together ended in a fight. I had enough. Trying to show and prove someone your worth is exhausting.

    It's always fun to see people react to this movie, especially since I'm Swedish. We do celebrate midsommar here every year, and they kept a lot of the current traditions in here. 10:03 that pole is something people make and dance around (like pageantry, but usually without the competition.) and it's actually a phallus symbol. Not sure about the history on that but it's a part of our tradition I guess. We usually don't dress up in those traditional Swedish outfits but a lot of people wear white dresses. So Midsommar is pretty much: Dress up nice, spend time with family and friends, eat good food and have drinks, dance around the midsommar pole, sometimes live music and partygames. It's quite an experience.

  • @eleanorcooke7136

    @eleanorcooke7136

    I assume the phallus is some sort of apotropaic symbol. In ancient Greece and Rome, the phallus was meant to ward off the evil eye, so perhaps it has some sort of similar meaning here, as well as the fertility aspect.

    Great reaction! One thing I will mention: the director's cut includes a super-important scene that shows a completely-sober Christian actually discussing and consciously AGREEING to have sex with Maya as part of a ceremony - and justifies it to himself as "first hand research" for his thesis. So while they do still drug him for the encounter itself, he'd already consented to it, knowing full-well that it would mean cheating on his girlfriend. In other words, he's shown to be less of a victim and more of an abusive dirtbag, and therefore the ending feels more earned and justified.

    even knowing this, it would still qualify as sexual assault because unless Christian also agreed to have unknown drugs in his system and a random old woman pushing on his ass as part of the ritual, his consent was violated. I haven't seen this clip so I can't be sure but just going by how confused he is before during and after the act, he doesn't seem like a person who is in complete control of his faculties. a person who is intoxicated cannot consent to sex, regardless of whether they consented beforehand. period. also, who cares if he cheated on Dani or not? he didn't deserve to be burned alive for it.

    This is about the trees…. There was a leak of the script months before the film was released (I read it and loved it) It went deeper into the meaning behind trees. I believe it had something to do with rebirth, and each member that has died gets their own tree. After their death, their family members will take care of the tree as a way to honor that family member. When he peed on the tree, he peed on his family member and took it very personally. The script in more interesting as they give more detail

    In the director's cut Christian is shown asking if the only way for him to witness the mating ritual is to participate. Yes, the end wasn't what he bargained for, but he made the decision. (Yes, I do believe it was still r@pə)

    Dany is a victim turned perpetrator. She was certainly manipulated and Christian sucked but they’re all victims. The yay ✨girl boss✨attitude just shows how good cults are at manipulating the characters and some of the audience

    Why do people absolutely want to frame this movie in a definitive black and white way is what I don't understand. You can appreciate that this community has extremely disturbing rituals; that murdering people is "not cool"; while at the same time not see Dani as a purely a "victim of the cult". The movie takes great care at portraying a community with an elaborate culture; it's not a death cult. In a way Dani was manipulated but in another way she was freed of her horrible life and her horrible boyfriend. This movie is so good because it thrives on this ambiguity, it would be a lot less efficience if we were only witnessing an evil cult murdering people gratuitously. Of course the movie manuipulate its audience; the way the effect of the drug are conveyed onscreen is incredible; but still surely nobody comes out of this movie thinking "these people are great they saved Dani, kudos to her she's gonna happy forever", you're left utterly disturbed.

    As a Norwegian. In our history we starved so many times there was a time of tradition that the elderly would walk willingly to the top of the Fjords and throw themselves of the cliffs. It breaks my heart that some of my ancestors had to resort to that. The whole point was that they went quick.
