In this episode of the Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Artist Series, world-renown guitarist and guitar collector Joe Bonamassa talks about why he likes vintage guitars, plays several of the new Murphy Lab-aged Gibson Custom Shop guitars, and offers viewers his first impressions - while absolutely blowing us away with some facts about how nitrocellulose lacquer on vintage guitars check, and how to spot a played-in guitar.
Joe tells viewers about the first time he ever handled a 1959 Les Paul, which was in 1993. He also talks about vintage Les Pauls that he has seen that have been converted and heavily modified in various ways, mainly because the owners never thought they would become so valuable.
As he plays the guitars from the Gibson Custom Shop’s Murphy Lab including a Les paul, SG, Firebird and ES-335, Joe gives us a demo and review of each model. He emphasizes the “played-in” feel of the Murphy Lab instruments. “The binding makes all the difference. It doesn’t feel new.” He adds, “The fact that you’ve been able to capture the played-in feel on a new guitar is something that, in the history of aging, hasn’t been done.” He also comments about the checking on the body on a Murphy Lab-aged ES-335 and how they got that right, too.
Joe also recalls his first guitar and what it was like to crack open the case. “It represents a dream - that anybody can pick one of these things up and go, you know, if I just believe in myself, I can do this.” And he leaves us with this statement about the Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab guitars: “What’s not to like? It’s that attention to detail … the hard work pays off, and this really shows.”

Impeccable taste in guitars,Joe always plays the coolest guitars on the planet!
My first Gibson guitar was a1965 Gibson SG Standard..It was hanging on the wall in the used guitar section of the store (before there was Vintage). I paid $360.00 dollars for it. It was well loved, worn, aged and the nickel PAFs were tarnished, the binding was smooth as ivory and the inlays were a bit yellowed with age. I remember strumming it and how resonant it was. I've seen a few of these Murphy Lab SG's and it brings back a lot memories of my 1st Gibson...only thing missing is that old guitar aroma. Gibson Por Vida!

Very lucky man, don't sell it. I wish I can go back in time and take a whole rack of 59's in Les Pauls, SG's and Telecasters lol. I am very happy with my two Jimmy Page signature Telecasters though. Who knows if they are the exact spec, but they play, feel and sound very good. I also Have an Epiphone 59' Les Paul that I paid $799 for. That to me was a steal and that guitar is still available. THe Murphy Labs will take a little time saving up for but I will have one in the future.
Beautiful guitars 💕
Joe now also plays SGs on stage. If anyone exemplifies the great Gibson heritage this man does, what a rich tapestry of instruments we have to play.
Joe is great. Always interesting, humble and a hard working individual. The guy deserves everything he has and that he bought his parents a beautiful home and one of his Dad's favourite mid 60's muscle car, demonstrates just what a loving family can achieve. All the best JB, his family and those fine folk who build these guitars. Fan from Sydney, Australia.
Ughhh GIBSON. You are the reason I can’t retire! I want everyone of these!
Joe Bonamassa is amazing live!!!
So awesome!
WOW!! Ok I'm get at least one!! They all sound GREAT! That white SG has a nice warm rumble which I love on a nice low watt amp!!PEACE
My Gibson Skinnerburst has that "ping" acoustically and roars. It is not a Murphy Lab though. It was built in 2014.
I love this man and his sense of humour ❤️❗️
Great video - great guitars!
As always it´s really interesting to listen to Joe talking about guitars, because he is one of those peolpe who really has the experience with these amazing old instruments. Just read a comment here that he is "the most boring man alive" - ok he is making no saltos or handstands, you only have to listen to what he´s saying and if it´s not interesting for you: Watch another video! Just last week I had the chance to test the Murphy Lab Les Pauls in each "aging version" - expensive but amazing. I would chose the very light aged Model! Keep the Blues alive!

Chris, they're nothing more than arm chair blowhards who call Joe boring. I don't find him boring at all. He still sounds like a kid in a candy store and a damn fine guitarist. Us guitarist are looking for the Holy Grail at a fraction of the cost, that sound. If we find it, we try to pay for it lol. With 15 guitars I own, I'm not done.

I have one, it’s amazing. Relic’d or not, it’s how ALL Gibson guitars should be made.
I love you JOE!!!!
What an awesome guy , !!!!
I have an OLD ES125T hanging in my NERDSVILLE Just like Joe...but only 1. I should bring it up to you guys so we can put a date on it. I like what Epiphone is doing. I have several, including the Epiphone '59 Les Paul I bought on Les Paul's last birthday, a Gold Glory, an SG Muse, an SG Jr. (I put a P-90 in) and a couple of the Les Paul Specials with P-90's ALL GREAT GUITARS
I love JB got to see him in Vegas.
Good enough for Joe.. good enough for anyone. That white SG sounded amazing.
Never understood the desire to take something new, wreck it cosmetically, and sell it as new. Then again, I've never understood the desire to buy something like that. There's no magic in these guitars - Joe is just an exceptional player. By the way, he sounds just as good on every other guitar he plays. 🤘Joe!

Did you actually listen to the numerous benefits mentioned that an aged guitar provides?
That cherry sunburst les paul though😍
I've been playing for 37 years and that Firebird is still my white whale. ;-)
that firebird is wow
Funny he mentions the Heel Crack on Sg's. A bandmate loaned me his 62 or 61 sg, and it had the heel crack, and when they reglued it together they did not use clamping properly, so the action was higher than normal. The crack was at such an odd angle too.
Joe is the best.
That frost blue Firebird is the coolest guitar I've ever seen
Nice mesa boogie !
Can't afford it, but it sounds and looks great.
******* I'm waiting for a Kirk Hammett/Gary Moore, Murphy Lab, 59 Greeny. 👌. I miss the old days when the Gibson showcase, was in the Opry Mills Mall (pre flood) seeing the Zakk Wylde Custom Shop bullseye on the wall was 🤘!!!!
I imagine heavens gate opening and that white sg meeting me. Drool.
Aw man I was hoping for a Steve Winwood reference on the firebird! Badass nonetheless

I noticed the Boogie product placement. I remember when Gibson use to embrace the Gibson/Marshall combo.

I’m not a Gibson guy but that Polaris white sggggg 🤤
His phrasing is so fresh. Always hear new sounds from him. How does he do that? There are only 12 notes!!!!
Those are some great-looking guitars. Nice that these Gibson demos can now be played through amps that the company actually sells. Interesting to see Joe give an almost instant analysis of the instruments, including little details like this one having a nice “bloom” or that one with the sweet “ping.” He’s seen so many it’s like he has a supernatural ability to access the guitars’ overall quality and feel within a minute or two. Very impressive. I did find it funny to hear him mention the current high prices of vintage guitars. Aren’t they expensive because of the market created by collectors like Joe and well-heeled pros? That’s not a criticism - just the way it is. Good old guitars eventually end up in the hands of the people with the bucks.
I really wish I could afford one lol maybe one day when I don’t have so many bills I might pick one up lol

You can adjust almost any good electric guitar with a stop tailpiece create "the ping" most of the time. It might be more prominent with vintage guitars though because they tend to be more resonant.
