Shakiras opinon on this is culturally the same opinion as (ballpark) 80% of latinas from the motherland. Hard to change something you grew up with.

I don’t enjoy generalizations made about a community of people. With that being said, this is more nuanced than i feel you’re making it. Shakira isn’t like many traditional Latinas. 80% of Latinas “from the motherland” are not with males for 10+ years with children without ever being married. That’s fundamentally the opposite of what you are “supposed” to do. Nor are they typically going around dragging their ex partners / husbands and or baby daddy’s publicly since it’s “not a woman’s place,” they instead suffer in privacy/silence which is the opposite of what Shakira is perpetuating on her latest record which is that “women no longer cry.” She’s always taken an empowered approach. She’s of course not the first to do so since other famous “motherland Latina” artists have done the same thru their art/music but that is undeniably different from what we are CONDITIONED to do which is publicly or privately for that matter not taking a firm approach against males who’ve committed wrongdoing lol machismo has done a number on the culture. She’s taken non traditional, empowered approaches throughout her career and personal life for years meanwhile she was born and raised in Colombia. The film wasn’t emasculating to me as a Latina, and I’m not particularly a misandrist who also believes that males serve a role in society just as women do although i also believe these roles could also be filled by the other in certain scenarios. Shakira seemingly picks and chooses which cultural norms to adhere to and i mean everyone has the right to since there are ideologies fundamentally wrong in every culture dictated by patriarchy that not everyone will identify with. She picks and chooses which is what her (bizarre) outlook about Barbie indicates to me. The media has been and is dictated by a male lens in which male characters are typically the brain of the operation while the woman is depicted as the airhead or damsel. Shakira is an educated, intelligent woman who’s well-read so i find her perspective on the film and what the director was attempting to do surprising and that it lacks nuance 🤷🏽‍♀️ We’re not a monolith which is what this also indicates. Latinas, whether born in their own respective motherlands or those who have more Americanized approaches, feel differently abt these things.

@@SupernaturalLove100I can mostly respect your opinion here but, I mean, come on. Have you asked your family from the motherland what they think? I think you know what most of them, women, would say. Like you know exactly what I’m talking about, you even said it with how our women tend to stay with men while they cheat and have literally 2 other families in other towns. You’re right about most of the assessment with Shakira’s lack of getting married, but I still don’t think she’s going to understand feminism fully due to the fact that she never really assimilated to American culture. If u ask me, she has idolized Pique for 10+ yrs and I’ve always seen he doesn’t really love her. She would rave about him and he would be very indifferent towards her. I honestly think she’s just now trying to understand empowerment - but she’s been in the shoes of Ken’s character her whole life and thinks that’s just the way it is I guess. She didn’t stay unmarried because she wanted to, she did so because Pique never wanted to marry her. His mom claims she had the children so he wouldn’t leave her

As someone from Venezuela, I'm just letting y'all know that latinos from the motherland have this same opinion by in large. I know America is on a feminism etc wave but that hasn't reached 60% of the rest of the world and I'm being generous. yall will probably say ppl should “know better” and what not, but all I'm saying is, its not weird for shakira to think this way. Latino pop culture and your average latina moms are wildly different than where American women are at right now. I'm talking straight from the motherland latinas. If you know any, ask them. The man being the provider is as alive as ever in most if not all of these countries. All of the motherland latinas in my family/that I know/and even on tv and latino meme groups feel that the barbie movie was emasculating. Shakira is talking through culture eyes and it's hard to change that when someone grew up a certain way. That just is what it is. Tho we don't hear about it as much as jlo lol, shakira grew up in the slums of Colombia way back when - and gender roles haven't had much of a shift there. Mindsets are different and it's naive to think that just flips. It's taken decades for America to change and honestly it's been ahead. I spent a year in Bangladesh and can tell you I've never heard more racial and sexist slurs in my life. Not every country is America, socially speaking.

I’m Latina (Dominican and Haitian) and don’t feel like the film was emasculating at all and Latinx culture as we all know is very much filled with machismo and traditional roles etc which were remnants of what Shakira was perpetuating from the culture. Neither good nor bad. The Latinas in my family also don’t feel that way. Obviously, we are are NOT a monolith, we ain’t all the same which is important to state. We live in a male dominated society with a male dominated media i.e films told from a majorly male perspective at all times while women are and have been historically portrayed as the least intelligent while the male character dominates as the brain or as the weaker sex aka the damsel. Youre right about American culture not being global norm or present within other cultures which is what Americans can forget. I do however think it’s bizarre for Shakira to have parroted what a lot of fragile males have said in response to the film because even though feminism in Latin culture and countries is not anywhere near as prevalent as it is in the USA, she’s perpetuated it dozens of times throughout her career in different ways and continues to do so now during the promotion of her new record in which she’s said that it’s no longer women who cry, but the man’s turn. This could also b viewed as emasculating. Or her making the decision to never marry Pique which is fundamentally different from what “motherland Latinas” are conditioned to do. Or her dragging Pique in her recent songs or her doing the media circuit while shading him left and right which to her two sons and traditional “motherland Latinas,” could also b viewed as “emasculating” since it opposes the tradition of women suffering in privacy/silence. So it seems she picks and chooses which cultural norms to adhere to which, to me, ain’t necessarily good or bad, but we can’t really say that she veers toward being like stereotypical “motherland Latinas.” She definitely has Americanized ways about her despite supposedly being from the “slums of Colombia 🤷🏽‍♀️

@@SupernaturalLove100 I was referring to a majority of women that grew up in our home countries, and I don’t know how many times you go but I think you know exactly what I’m talking about. The Barbie movie wasn’t exactly well-loved by the majority of latinas who are directly from, still living in, their OG country. Shakira and pique never married because Pique didn’t want to. She was the one simping, so unfortunately I think she should have walked out a long time ago. But if it was up to her she would’ve married him, she stated it many times. Suffering in silence part is def true and she does come of as a bit of a hypocrite due to that I would say. However, Shakira’s mindset has never assimilated to American culture - even with the pique bashing (cause she’s hurt). When I read her opinion it immediately clicked with so much I’ve heard at home, at church, at school for the past several months from almost every Latina I’ve encountered (again, I mean the ones who usually don’t speak the most perfect English and just came here from their country as an adult and was not raised here. Or my family that still lives in Venezuela and Colombia and other friends in surrounding countries.) Shakira is from the slums of Colombia, not sure why u put that in quotes but she went back to where she grew up and founded schools for the children to get a better education. Either way, I can tell you right now as someone with family in Colombia, feminism has a LONG way to go there. Again, you can’t just change a cultural mindset just like that🤌🏼 And I imagine you taken a little better to this being that you’re mixed, but maybe you’re just lucky 🤷🏻‍♀️

Everything in film, especially historically, has always been told through a male lens. When films have centered male characters while depicting female characters as the damsel, prostitute or dim-wit, have women historically collectively questioned why both males and women couldn’t be empowered? Lol. How many years did women have to watch themselves be degraded on screen and spoken abt in vulgar terms by male characters?? As SOON as women have something for themselves that’s empowering, you people start asking “what about the males?” Kinda sick.

I normally don’t find myself in the comment section but as a Latina listener of you guys it was hard watching two WHITE women tear apart a strong Latina woman like Shakira. You may disagree with her opinion but that was just too harsh. Also, the comments about her sons were unnecessary. PS it’s also not the first time I’ve heard you tear down Latinos because of their perspective. Maybe educate yourself on what we believe in before having an opinion.

I will have to read this interview with shakira you both critique her opinion on what she is in favor of pop culture but then proceed to say we didn’t need to hear this or we don’t care what your sons think. So you like your pop stars to only have opinions when is similar to yours and if not then we don’t care or need to hear. Also to go as far as saying this shows what values Shakira is teaching her boys like you can suppose you do know what values she is teaching them. When you have children your opinions change about certain matters but again you don’t know really much about Shakira. And it’s an Interview, she’s going to give her opinions on matter. You’re showing what people critique about young liberals who can’t listen to other point of views without calling that other side names.

37:35 Eh. I honestly don’t think Shakira’s regretting any of those comments as she’s always been opinionated, well-read and unwavering. I disagree w her perspective on it but I think she communicated her opinion somewhat sensibly by not putting women down. I do agree with you two that she was also focused on what males would feel upon watching it when they weren’t the demographic, as if women gotta b pre occupied with what males think at all times and assure their comfort when everything else is told from a male lens.

24:50 ISNT it that deep though? 💀 I mean wasn’t Taylor just going on about how Kanye and Kim’s lies / distortion of their phone call led Taylor into hiding like a leper for like 2 years and made her feel like the world wanted nothing to do with her? I mean, if someone did that to someone I called my “friend,” I imagine it’d be crappy of me to associate w that person’s business. Yall went on to describe Sabrina as loyal which, I have no clue if she is or isn’t, but I don’t think her choice to work with Kim necessarily indicates loyalty to Taylor lol. Making a bad and gaining visibility when you’re up and coming is great and all but integrity and principle is something separate 🤷‍♀️ I mean, how are you okay with someone manipulating a phone call to villainize another lol. Yall go on to say that yall don’t think Selena, Kelly and or Blake would ever work with Kim and that’s because they give off the impression that they’re actually loyal to Taylor and have seen the degree of suffering that family caused her so. Maybe Sabrina and Taylor’s relationship is merely surface-level, that’s what it’s gotta be. I don’t think it’s something to drag Sabrina over bc that’s a business decision and she has a right to take it and we don’t know just how close they are but it does say something abt loyalty, certainly.
