“We Are Striking to Disrupt the System”: An Hour with 16-Year-Old Climate Activist Greta Thunberg

In her first extended broadcast interview in the United States, we spend the hour with Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who has inspired millions across the globe. Last year she launched a school strike for the climate, skipping school every Friday to stand in front of the Swedish parliament, demanding action to prevent catastrophic climate change. Her protest spread, quickly going global. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren around the globe have participated in their own local school strikes for the climate. Since her strike began in 2018, Greta has become a leading figure in the climate justice movement. She has joined protests across Europe. She has addressed world leaders at the U.N. climate talks in Poland and the European Union Parliament. She has even met the pope. And now she is in New York to join a global climate strike on September 20 and address the U.N. Climate Action Summit on September 23. Greta has refused to fly for years because of emissions, so she arrived here after a two-week transatlantic voyage aboard a zero-emissions racing yacht. She is also planning to attend the U.N. climate summit in Santiago, Chile, in December. Greta joined us Tuesday in our Democracy Now! studio.

Part of why she is so admired is because she refuses to sell out. She could have spent her time the past few months sponsoring companies trying to greenwash themselves. Instead she came to America by boat to help the protests on the ground. Her refusal to compromise is infectious.

How Greta describes the initial shock of realizing that people around her were not reacting so strongly to climate change reminds me of how Chomsky described his response to the atomic bombing of Japan: he was a 16 year old camp counselor and while everyone else around him basically went about their day he walked alone into the woods, horrified at the realization that the human race had discovered how to destroy itself.

What she faced and still facing is actually mediocratism, which is apparently the most dangerous and destructive force in the world. Mediocratism is self-centred, short-sighted and duplicitous. Thanks to the sentimental (i.e. selfish) perception of what democracy is about and what freedom means, mediocratism rules the world at the moment.

I remember coming across an article once that claimed that climate change was part of the reason the Syrian civil war started. It said that the climate change made your country side dry, farmers did not get water etc, and many people had to move to the cities. This combined with refugees from Iraqi created a lot of hardship for Syrians, which made them go into the streets to demonstrate. Is there any truth to this description?

Do not fret, Greta. You can be a mother, a grandmother, and great grandmother. Climate change has been occurring since the atmosphere was formed billions of years ago. On a graph, global temperatures are represented by an undulating line that goes up and down across a straight line. The earth will die when our sun burns out. Greta, go back to school. Finish your education. Relish your childhood. Come back in 20 years and let us know how you are. If you open your mind and shake off your indoctrination, you may be angrier than you are now. Keep a journal of what you feel now; revisit your journal as you gain life experience. Best wishes to you, Miss Thunberg.

Greenpeace care deeply about the environment & take things seriously but do not rely on governmental/corporate sponsorship, do not abuse children by parading them on the global stage as parents do & certainly do not declare, like A-Cortez, that our world is going to end in 12 years (if we do not panic now).

My wife and i are sick of the lack of leadership from our "leaders" and steadily rising CO2 19 years ago we moved to a small rural community, we heat our home with a sustainable section of forest on our own land, cut in rotations, we grow a few hogs, turkeys, ducks, about 50 chickens, plus egg-layers for ourselves and family. We share some items with neighbors and they share with us. We have a large garden, and just enough pasture to support our animals. We have a well, and septic field for our water needs, the only thing we rely on from outside of our own resources is electricity - which if we could find a sensible way to replace with our own system we would, and are working towards this as well. I don't know what or when our government is going to act, but we have done our part for 19 years. It is actually not that difficult, and many of our neighbors do a lot of these things too.

[...] They serve a purpose only at the stage of destabilization of a nation. For example, your leftists in the United States: all these professors and all these beautiful civil rights defenders. They are instrumental in the process of the subversion only to destabilize a nation. When their job is completed, they are not needed any more. They know too much. Some of them, when they get disillusioned, when they see that Marxist-Leninists come to power-obviously they get offended-they think that they will come to power. That will never happen, of course. However, disrupting "the system," using alternative energy sources, frugality, transcending cognitive dissonance, questioning authority, standing up for one's beliefs: Claiming and demonstrating these and other values constitute Greta's gift. But the real problem is the hatred of other people, the divisiveness among people in nations, and the forces that advance divisiveness so that those forces may step in and "make peace." I'd like to see someone like Greta take a larger world view even while holding to her values.

@Christina F Your comment is over the top, bizarre would not be excessive to say. This young Swedish teen cares that the world is being drastically harmed by using the sky as a waste disposal system. And anyone who has looked up at the sky above any city of any size whatever on a summer day has seen the brown dome that settles over these regions, you have too! These vast clouds of air pollution often remaining for days and even weeks at a time. And that is only the emissions that are "visible". Carbon dioxide is invisible, so is methane gas.... the two primary pollutants that are changing the way our atmosphere allows in and releases infra-red radiation from the sun. This young teen is only insisting that adults stop ignoring the urgent calls by the 'vast majority' of qualified scientists who have been warning for more than two decades we must take genuine action to brake the enormous emissions of carbon dioxide and methane gas into the sky. It has to cease or else they have mapped out the consequences, ignoring their warnings does not make you a warrior against globalists, that is a farcical position, it's a joke. If you ignore the scientists you are choosing to be an ostrich. Demonizing Greta is insane behavior, Christina. Stop lapping up conspiracy theories (the 'globalists' are pushing her), they are the domain of very lazy minds. If you don't like globalization , fine. Neither do I. But that in no way prevents you from recognizing the threat of trashing the atmosphere with waste gasses which trap in heat from the sun.

I mean, my COUNTRY is on FIRE right now. On fire. Man, I was born in Toronto, and whenever I went back I always took a nostalgic enjoyment from looking up and seeing the top of the CN Tower and remembering going up to the very top as as kid and seeing the pictures now, I mean, you can barely see it; I had heard about the air quality but.......I'm still a little stunned and that was not long ago. But, y'know, down here surrounded by three of the biggest lakes in the world we've had no smoke that I have noticed or anyone I've run into and it's just pouring rain so I really get the feeling from some people that 'hey, look, it's not happening here, it'll pass...' Not just words of affirmation and support either. It is humbling while at the same time breaks my heart the youth like this girl have to do what should already be. The kind of stress, anxiety, and fear we are putting on our children through our inaction is immeasurable for what? It’s tantamount to child abuse. As a father would you not give your life your everything for your child? As a mother would you not do the same? Its all for them and their futures. Where is your moral courage that children have to do this because we refuse to? It’s time those who are not children grew a moral backbone and took to the streets
